@Sarina: In the debate contest "What Would You Do? ", do you see a need to clarify whether the contestant could choose to be a boy or a girl or does it not matter?

IMO Once the contest has begun I dont think there is any scope for further clarifications ,- ( taking a cue from the release of exam paper in the hall scenario that had been quoted sometime earlier.)

If a participant is carrying forward his/her current gender into the competition, then there is a danger that the other participants (or even judges and onlookers) might associate the current personality of the participant with the role they assumed in the competition which could swing the votes in favor of or against a participant. The judges should take that away by making it a non-factor.
Plus, other superfluous factors could be thrown in by the participants which might reflexively expand the scope of the competition. As a simple example, is it a boy vs. girl debate? I don't think so. Could it turn it into a boy vs. girl debate? It has the potential.
