Ah there are social responsibilities too.

when it comes to religion we should be tolerant.

If Rusdie himself was a Muslim it may not sound so bad I think, from the perception of Muslims.

there are Christians and Hindus who criticize their own religions but many do not care so much.

Yes by right but there are people who are crazy and very sensitive on all issues especially religion. More emphasis is given to religion than to God.

I think Rusdie should have titled the book something else like the "The Magic Book" etc it would not be noticed so much. I understand his book is an epic novel but some parallels have been drawn with the lives of saints and prophets of the Muslim order.
