Border Issues

Border disputes with Pakistan disrupt into violence and have been the root cause of wars since Independence from Britain was attained in 1947. When Independence was granted Pakistan became a separate country, but there have continually been disputes over which country claims ownership over the area called Jammu & Kashmir. This issue is still a source of friction between the neighbouring nations. Watch your newspaper for the current state of this issue.

Pollution

Pollution problems are a serious concern in India. With factory emissions and cars polluting the air, farming chemicals affecting the soil and water, and garbage from over a billion people who are increasingly using "disposable" products, the issue of pollution is growing bigger and bigger. New Delhi is considered one of the most polluted cities in the world.

Languages

One of the main political issues in Indian politics is connected to the language problem. After India's independence the government decided the official language of India was to be Hindi.

Among the other language speakers of India, the decision to choose Hindi as the official language was seen as an attempt to erase their cultures. After political, and violent struggles, the central government decided to allow the state governments to pick their official languages and recognized constitutionally other languages of India. For now the Indian constitution recognizes 18 Indian languages. The Indian constitution also declares that English can be used for official purposes.

Women in India

With a firmly entrenched patriarchy in place, gains in the status of women have often been slow in coming and painful in achieving.

A major source of concern in India is the failure to create strong social sanctions against violent men. A recent survey showed that a big percentage of Indian women believed wife beating to be justified in certain circumstances. Aside from physical and sexual violence, emotional and economic violence are also prevalent.

Poverty
Poverty in India is a very real and very complex issue, 26% of India's population was living below their national poverty line. While this is an improvement from the 1950's figure of over 50% living in poverty, there are still well over 250 million people for whom poverty is a way of life in India.

Children in particular are detrimentally affected by poverty. For those affected by poverty, problems such as malnutrition, child labor and high mortality rates are very real issues faced daily. Although India contains fewer than 20% of the world child population, more than 40% of the world's malnourished children are found there.

Child labor is a significant problem in India where it is estimated that between 75 and 90 million children under 14 are working. The jobs they perform are often difficult and low-paying, but their wages are needed to help provide food or shelter for their families.

Uniformity of language cannot be achieved without sacrificing something. China too has many dialectic languages but Mandarin is the official language. The advantage in China is that although dialects are spoken the written language is standard. This was achieved many years ago. I believe as much of the dialects and languages should be preserved as these are part of the culture and traditions of the people.

i think rest of the issues are not that important the main issue or the need of the hour to put a full stop to terrorism from other side of the border. until that is achieved india cannot concentrate on its internal problems.

Border Issues

This will not be a problem in a few decades, so there is nothing to worry about. Muslim fertility rate is quite high in Pakistan, Bangladesh and India; while hindu fertility rate is low. Ilegal migration on a massive scale to India is a natural state of affairs.

Pollution

Too little, too late. Nothing to worry about.

Languages

Yes, I agree. Too many languages. Everybody should learn one language only- better for national integration. Otherwise economic opportinities are hard and you are limited to regional areas because of the language.

Women in India

Women are already equal.
Poverty
Yes, this is because of discrimination and persecution of muslims by Hindus. There should be reservations for muslims as well in education and private sector to balance things.

no i learnt English as a hobby with first language through out. any way i apologise may be i was a bit too harsh but ur reasons r too prejudiced. most of the reasons are commane in most developed countries also like corruption, poverty and all that. rest of the reasons i will say that all countries have their own problems may be may be different but they r just minor things, not directly affecting the progress of a nation.

Today's major issue is: would India have been better off if it had not achieved independance from Britain?
When Britain occupied India, it constructed 90,000 sq. km of railway tracks. How much has the Indian govt. constructed since?
A foreign born Indian leader is more Indian than most Indian politicians.
A foreign born coach controls Indian cricket fortunes.
Capital flows from foreign sources far exceed investments by Inndian enterprenuers.
Outsourcing to India is also slowly getting reduced, because there are cheaper markets.
The only ones who control India's destiny are the Indians in India itself. If the nation reduces it's foreign dependence and encourages indegenious industries and develops it's own technologies then our image abroad and at home is bound to grow in leaps and bounds.

Generally it is always better to let your own people run their own country. But that should not stop them from seeking help where required or getting in foreign expertise.
