I just now saw the Olympics opening ceremony and I was apalled by the way the Indian contingent came out. They were way too casual in their dressing, none of them represented Indian colors . Infact Sania and Sunita turned up in track suits.
When I saw every other country dressed immaculately in their country's dress evenly, so proud and happy, I was extremely dissapointed with the way the Indian team presented itself.
why are there no attention given to such things esp when the 56 member team is the representation of india in the biggest sporting event of the world.
Its as if they just dont care or feel the pride in representing our country. Is there no motivation for them?
For the past few months, none of the news channel gave any importance to the atletes competing in the olympics, I saw them talk abt it only in the last maybe 3 days.
Here in the U.S, they had exclusive coverage of the olympic trials. A daily tribute to their athletes. I mean no wonder we are not developing at all.
we are so involved in movies and politics, indulged in corruption that other things doesnt matter at all.
No organisation, couldnt they have consulted a designer and designed a proper attire for the indian athletes. I mean the men in white sherwanis and golden dupattas, if I hadnt seen the flag, I woudnt have figured out if it was the indian team or any other asian team. Even our neighbours all came dressed in their national colors.
why cant our country give the most important sporting event some importance and give them the necessary infrastructure and motivation.
No wonder we dont win any medals that too in a one billion population.
we just lack killer instinct, already some of them are saying participating was a pride in itself than winning. C'mon one should go out there to win, if u have the attitude that participating was more important than winning then how are we supposed to win.

speaking of flags etc,
Indians are very notorous(there is another appropriate word that starts with a "a" and ends with a "l" about the flag), given the history of lawsuits filed against Sania Mirza and Sachin Tendulkar amongst a lot of others. Indian constition disallows the displays that most countries allow about the flag by their flag code(excerpt pasted below from the Flag code that can be found at http://mha.nic.in/pdfs/flagcodeofindia.pdf)

Explanation 4. – The disrespect to the Indian National Flag means and includes-

(a) a gross affront or indignity offered to the Indian National Flag; or

(b) dipping the Indian National Flag in salute to any person or thing; or

(c) flying the Indian National Flag at half-mast except on occasions on which the Flag is flown at half-mast on public buildings in accordance with the instructions issued by the Government; or

(d) using the Indian National Flag as a drapery in any form whatsoever except in state

funerals or armed forces or other para-military forces funerals; or

(e) using the Indian National Flag as a portion of costume or uniform of any description or

embroidering or printing it on cushions, handkerchiefs, napkins or any dress material; or

(f) putting any kind of inscription upon the Indian National Flag; or

(g) using the Indian National Flag as a receptacle for receiving, delivering or carrying anything except flower petals before the Indian National Flag is unfurled as part of celebrations on special occasions including the Republic Day or the Independences Day;

so I hope you will pardon the poor athletes😉

I never said we should wear the indian national flag, I said we should have worn indian colours to indicate the country we are representing.... for eg , pakistan athletes wore green, Srilankan athletes wore blue....
what they wore was way too casual, they were the representatives of our country and they didnt represent us at all.
The same Sania Mirza who wore track suits, was very much dressed for her match against sharapova which I watched in the u.s open grandslam. Her huge earrings and what not...... she played so poorly that the match got over within an hour....we still treat her like she is a big best player........she was horrible, she couldnt even get one ball inside the court. All i can say is we are all hype and we give it way too much for people who dont deserve them and thats why they dont care nor give a damn to us or the nation.
Anyway, the amount of dressing she did for that match, even if she could have spent 1% of that, she would have come dressed in a saree.

First of all nicely written post and some questions you posed, reflects my sentiments too. Perhaps representing India in olympics is an acheivement itself after several competitive and political hurdles that they feel job is done, when it has not even started yet.SAD!
As for dressing sense, cann't resist asking "whats up with those black shoes on sherwanis? " and "why cann't Sania keep off from getting talked about her attire?". Whatever it was but surely yahoo photo correspondant was so mermerised seeing them that he/she forgot to even click thier picture (out of 189 pics online on yahoo.com not even one of Indian squad:( ), thanks to TOI could see the pics

I remember we had a post regarding soring condition of sports in India, unable to find it, some nice views there. There is another one on hockey that touches sports in india, might be a good read. BTW - official site for India participating in the Olympics https://www.olympic.ind.in/ .
All I can say at this moment is "ALL THE BEST to THEM" 😊

I don't have many complaints about the dressing of Indian contigent... yes, it would have looked nice if they would have used atleast one Indian colour... maybe orange or green duppatta... but overall they all looked nice and I felt proud looking at them walking behind Indian tri-colour... ofcourse I will feel more proud when they win medals but that's another story...

And I have no complaints about Sania and Sunita after reading this...

It's enough for me that they wanted to walk with other members even after lengthy practice session...

what are u talking about, every thing abt the opening ceremony was rehearsed time and again including the opening march. They had 4 years to practice , they found the time for last minute practicing before the opening ceremony.
Ohter country members would have practiced too, not one member from other country was dressed inappropriately except indian women.
The gals and their excuses, the gal wont play well the entire time and they find the last minute the opening ceremony to practice, what rubbish.
its our fault u know, we place them above our head and justify all their actions, thats why they behave like this without a care for any sentiments.
their reason that they came after last minute practice is bullocks, they couldnt take time off a few minutes before when they knew very well when it was going to start , when it was rehearsed several times.
if every contingent of the 250 nations could dress up in their traditional dress, these two gals are the only ones who use practice as their excuse.

Nope... I still feel it's not a big deal... you tell be that they were out partying or clubbing and thus could not change into sarees.... I will definitely join hands with you in bashing them... but if they tell me they were practicing... I am ok with that.... now why they were practicing just before opening ceremony... well their trainers can tell better.... obviously they must have planned some schedule for them.
And many athletes did not even participate in the march... lot of swimmers skip it b'coz they did not want to drain themselves in hot and humid climate... does that make them any less petriotic??
Also I know that the opening ceremony performances were rehearsed... but the opening march was rehearsed too?? That's a news to me...
Anyway right now I am too excited as India won it's first GOLD👏👏.... congrats Abhinav👏👏... you made us proud😃.... I hope this inspires other players to do better than their best...

yeah thats great news and congrats to Abinav for that. He made a very valid point, unless our sports system changes, we wont get anywhere whereas in a one billion population, we could easily win 30-40 golds if proper motivation and guidance is given.'
as for the last minute practice queen Sania Mirza, she retired today coz of her "injury" after being one set down.
Its not abt wearing sarees, its abt representing the oc**try in the most important games.
I never knew many of the nations , when they marched was when I knew. You are the ambassador for the country.
We indians have an excuse for everything, practice was theirs.
Of all the 2-3 years they have to practice, they found last minute practicing as their excuse.
Everything was rehearsed and their schedule was told beforehand. If they didnt want to participate, dont come and then get "injured" and go back home all high and mighty to ur endoresements.
These people are put on a pedestal for no reason and all their actions are justified thats why they dont give a damn abt such things.

I concur with Tina, no matter what, if the participant wanted to represent the country in a world wide watched ceremony they should have maintained the decorum, in respectable and dignified fashion not for the heck of it. I won't agree on justification by Indian diplomate walking in UN's meeting dressed casually just becoz he/she was busy doing last minute changes to his/her presentation, if they were aware of the agenda 2-3 years or well in advance.
Another thing is, if injury (not sudden) was obvious why was someone else not given a chance rather then backing out from a loosing match ? anyways, no one expects a gold there. Am not sure but will a replacement be allowed for doubles match?

I still feel it's not that big a deal.... I am not saying it's the right way to go but to me it's minor issue... however Sania getting out of the Olympics is a big deal for me.... it's very disappointing and the way she got out was more shameful.... if she was still recovering from wrist surgery then how come she passed her fitness test?? She just wasted one ticket to Beijing.... maybe someone else could have gone instead of her.... now Womens doubles is also in question because of her😕...
