CHAPTER 29 - My Better Half
When he reached the courtroom, the hearing had already started. He seated himself on the farthest bench so that neither of the arguing lawyers could see him.
Swadheenta presented some documents before the judge
"Your honour, these are some documents to prove my point"
Judge
- "But Ms Swadheenta, these tests have been done in London, which the court cannot approve"Swadheenta -
"Therefore I would like to request the honourable court to order a fresh DNA test from a government approved laboratory"
Suhasini -
Objection Your Honour, these reports hold no meaning, they could have been manufactured by the defence. I don't understand why we would need to harass a four year old kid living thousands of miles away just to satisfy the whims and fancies of the prosecution lawyer.Swadheenta
- No Mam , you will soon understand that these are not my whims and fancies. Your Honor, I would like to call upon the witness box, Doctor Rashmi Gulati who has been the gynaecologist of Mrs. Kavita Chaudhary.Suhasini looked at the minister and his son and shook her head in indignation. Adarsh could not see their faces, but it seemed they were caught unawares by this googly of Swadheenta.
Doctor Gulati came to the witness box. After some formal questions Swadheenta asked her,
"Doctor Gulati, tell us when you first examined Mrs Chaudhary""
About three years ago, before that she was seeing another gynaecologist."Swadheenta -
"I will not need to get much deeper into her medical problem, you just tell the court what did you find in her medical history about her parity. In layman terms , the number of children she has borne."Doctor Gulati
- "I shall request a private audience from your honour as this is a sensitive matter" Judge -
"Ok fine, meet me in my personal chamber. The prosecution and defence counsel may also accompany"After they came back,
Swadheenta -
"Your Honour, I think you have now got a clearer picture of the situation. In all probablity, a child has been taken away from his mother. Even though he was alive , she has been deprived of her rights as his mother for no fault of hers. Therefore it is of utmost importance to establish the inheritance of child by conducting a DNA test. It has not escaped the court how miserable the poor woman had become. She has been nothing but a living corpse all these years. The hope that her child might be alive has brought a fresh lease of life into her. I would request the honorable court to act sympathetically towards my client. If the court fails her today, it would fail every mother in the world. That's all your honour"Swadheenta finished her argument with an emphatic appeal. Adarsh felt proud of his wife.
Judge - "
It can be said without doubt that certain facts have been brought to the court's notice which have made it imperative to conduct a DNA test of Mr. Avinash Chaudhry's son. Does the defence have any objection to it?"
Suhasini - "
No Your honour, nothing can be said before the DNA reports arrive"The judge adjourned the court after fixing the next hearing three weeks later.
Outside the courtroom, Suhasini was talking to the Minister. Adarsh went and hid behind a pillar to hear their conversation. She was looking very angry.
"
You have kept from me such an important fact. What were you thinking ?"
"I had told you what I thought was important. I never knew she would reach so far. She lives in your house. You should have known what she was up to."
The Minister countered
"I don't snoop around on people. That is not how I work. I need my clients to present all the facts to me, but you have kept me in the dark. Now you are in big trouble unless you do an out of court settlement with Reena and her family. Give her back the custody of the child and ask her to withdraw the case. Else you know your entire family is going to be charged with kidnapping."Suhasini warned
"How can you give up so easily Suhasiniji. Remember, the future of your career rests on this case"The minister reminded her.

Mr. Chaudhry, I have very little patience with people who try to threaten me. I only stand to lose my career, but your family is in a bigger problem. Think about my proposal, this is your only way out. And please don't try to cause any physical harm to Reena or her family, it will do you more harm than good. Trust me, I am giving you an honest advice"Suhasini said sternly

What if the DNA results come negative"Minister suggested
"Why do you want to shoot yourself on the foot Minister sahab? You know Swadheenta has very strong connections in the media. Your bluff will be caught very soon. And also the attack on her today is going to act against us. So it will be better to go about it in the most honest way possible."Suhasini pointed out.
Adarsh chuckled hearing the conversation. Mom has taken Mantriji for a ride. So Swadheenta was right all along. Mom never meant any harm. She too wanted Reena to get her child back. Else she would not have helped them with so many clues, neither would she have asked the Minister to hand over the custody of the child to Reena. He was feeling more and more guilty for getting mad at her in the morning for no fault of hers.
"Adarsh"Swadheenta ran up to him.
"You got any information from the Police Station?"She asked
"Yes, initial investigations suggest that Baweja is the mastermind and apparently I was the target"Adarsh revealed
"This Baweja. Looks like he has not yet learnt his lesson. I am not going to spare him. Have the police detained them?"Swadheenta said angrily
"Calm down Supergirl. They have taken few of their men into custody, but you know they are powerful people. The police needs some solid proofs to arrest them. So, they are waiting for the shooter's confession. I will try my best to get him to confess without the use of force. By the way, you were too good today. You just owned the courtroom"Adarsh said proudly.

Thanks, now nothing can stop us from winning. But you know this would not have been possible without Mom. I know you are still angry with her but please put aside your resentment for some time. She needs you. Last night.."Swadheenta was stopped midway by Adarsh
"I know. I know she has been suffering for over a year but she never shared it with any of us. I came to know about it just a while ago when I heard her conversation with a psychiatrist. But you know Swadheenta, I am so lucky to have you in my life. It was you who stood by my mother when her own children left her side. You understood the pain she was going through when we all were bluffed by her tough facade. Thank you once again for being my better half.""Stop flattering me . You are also very lucky to have a mother who did not hold you by your ears and take you to task for unnecessarily insulting her infront of everyone. Now go and wish her. I hope you remember it's her birthday."Swadheenta looked at him reproachfully.

Yes I remember. Believe me, I was going to wish her but before that the shooting happened and I simply lost it. But where did she go?"Adarsh looked around.
"I think she has left for home early. Maybe she wanted to avoid the uncomfortable questions of the media"Swadheenta said thoughtfully
"Then you too go home fast. And don't let her out of sight even for a moment. I shall go and bring Simmi and the baby."Adarsh instructed.
"But shouldn't we deal with the Bawejas first? I can't be at peace until the real mastermind is arrested. I am so worried for you."Swadheenta said anxiously

Don't worry about me. I have to attend to Mom first. I cannot think of anything else before I bring her family back, till then you look after her."Saying this Adarsh left.
