CHAPTER 22 - The End Justifies the Means
Swadheenta got her brain wheels rolling. She remembered that Avinash Chaudhary's wife was the daughter of an Industrialist based in London. It could be possible that he had sent his wife and son to London to avoid getting them involved in the case. Then why are they sending the samples to Mom ? Or was it that Mom had procured them stealthily? It would not be impossible for her. She had good connections in London. Their family business was being run by her cousins from there. But the biggest question was how did Adarsh get to know about this.?
Adarsh wondered how would he be able to reach the Airport before his parents. The traffic was already at its peak and they had left half an hour before him. Now there was only one way, he would have to delay them. He took his phone and made a call to the driver of his father's car
"Hello, Vinay...Where are you ?...ok, now listen carefully. Take the longest route possible to the Airport...Just do what I say...if they ask anything tell that there is a big traffic jam...good...no, I won't tell him about it"
Jaya was surprised to see Adarsh. She was obviously not expecting him.
"Where is Mom and Dad ?"
"They must have got stuck in a traffic jam. I had some time off , so thought of coming here to receive you"
Adarsh said with a smile, then seeing her tensed he asked
"What is the matter ? You look worried "
"Actually, Mithilesh mamu asked me to hand over a very important parcel to Mom the moment I land in Delhi. Now that she has not yet arrived, I am so afraid of misplacing it."
Jaya said
"Chill Bhabhi, I am here to receive you. We will head straight for home. You can give it to her then. It won't get misplaced in my car"
Adarsh tried to alleviate her fears
"Can't we wait for some time, till they reach ?"
Jaya asked
"I am afraid they are going to take a long time. Today the traffic is very bad. It will be better if I call and ask them to go back. Why to put them through so much trouble. Now come with me. Tell me which bag has the parcel, I will keep it inside the car"
Adarsh had to locate the parcel
"The green duffel bag"
Jaya said pointing to the bag
"Here it is, your proof.You don't know what all I had to do to get them"
Adarsh said as he placed the files on the table in front of Swadheenta
Swadheenta scanned through them, so her guess was right. These were indeed the DNA reports of Avinash's son. There were also reports matching them with both Avinash and Reena. Then she said ,
"These reports do prove that the boy is indeed Avinash and Reena's son but the court will not accept them. These have been done from a lab in London. The court can say we prepared a fake DNA report. We have to convince the court to order for a DNA test of the boy that will be done from a government authorised lab. The question is how do we do that?"
"Hmm, at least we know that the boy is alive. Reena and Roshan will be so happy to know it. But you are right , the court will not believe it. We have to find something to convince them."
Adarsh said thoughtfully
"Adarsh, do you realize that these reports prove one more thing. That Mom was not misleading me."
Swadheenta said, happy to have her faith restored
"Who knows, she might still have some tricks up her sleeves. I cannot say anything until the final verdict"
Adarsh was still skeptical
"Sometimes I really wonder whether she is my Mom or yours. You are always accusing her and I am always defending her. You are not even ready to give her the benefit of doubt"
Swadheenta said shaking her head
"I want to, but negatives still outweigh the positives. Can't we talk about something else ?"
Adarsh reasoned
"Fine, let's talk about you. Tell me how did you get to know that Jaya Bhabhi was going to bring them. Were you snooping on Mom"
Swadheenta asked suspisciously
"Why does that matter ? When they can use us for their benefit, can't we use them for the greater good ? After all, the end justifies the means."
Adarsh was trying to cover up his guilt
"So, you won't tell me. It's fine. But remember what you said just now, the end justifies the means. And I somehow feel both mother and son think alike in this regard"
Swadheenta observed
Swadheenta was not feeling good about hijacking Suhasini's documents. This was against her ethics. She would rather take her permission and use them. Now that she knew that Suhasini was covertly helping them, she would definitely not deny. Thinking all this she decided to go and talk to her mother in law.
Swadheenta knocked on the door of Suhasini's study. She was surprised to find it locked from inside. This was very unusual of Suhasini. There was no answer the first time. Swadheenta knocked again,
"Just a minute"
Suhasini's voice came from inside
Swadheenta wondered what was taking her so long to open the door.
"Oh, Swadheenta you. What is the matter ? You need anything ?"
Suhasini asked after opening the door
"Yes Mom, I wanted to talk about something important related to the case. You had sent for some important documents from London through Jaya Bhabhi. But Adarsh brought them to me. These documents are going to be of immense help to me in the case. But I cannot use them without your permission"
Swadheenta disclosed everything
"Looks like your Robinhood husband has taken his name very seriously, but you are spoiling all his hardwork. Don't you think that you are a little too honest ?. I don't know whether it is a good thing or not but it can surely make your job all the more difficult. You got an upper hand with those documents but you are giving it away. Seriously , you are incorrigible"
Suhasini shook her head in disapproval
"It does not matter whether the task is difficult or easy, but I cannot do things which disagrees with my conscience"
Swadheenta said
"Fine, I don't want to argue with you at this hour of night. We already have more than our fair share in the court. Anyways, don't you think if I had a problem with the documents being misplaced, I would have already confronted Adarsh by now. I know it was him who brought Jaya from the Airport"
Suhasini said and then as if testing her, asked
"I think you are aware that you cannot use them in court. You have to convince them to order a probe . Have you thought how you will go about it ?"
Swadheenta still had no clue about it. She shook her head
"Hmm..have you ever discussed it with your father in law?"
Suhasini asked
"No, It never occurred to me, but now that you mentioned it, I think we can get a lot of information from him. He has been a close aide of the minister for a long time"
Swadheenta replied
"And one more thing, you might feel that we are trying to mislead you, and I don't blame you for that. Infact you should always follow up our leads with your own investigations. I think you should leave now. It's already too late, go and get some sleep"
Suhasini said
As she neared the door , Swadheenta saw something that made her curious. A dismantled toy war-tank was lying under the table, and a toolbox beside it. Suhasini noticed her looking and said,
"I broke it by accident. Was, trying to fix it."
"But you can always get a new one. Why are you trying to fix this old one ?"
Swadheenta questioned
"I got a new one, but this one was his favourite . He was not ready to let it go"
Suhasini said as she picked it up lovingly
Swadheenta could not make any sense of what she was saying. She asked ,
"Who are you talking about ?"
Suhasini turned to her. Swadheenta was shocked to the core on seeing her eyes. There was something strange in them which she could not describe in words. They were shining with extraordinary brightness but a lot of anguish. Suhasini composed herself soon and said,
"No one. Can you leave me alone for sometime ?"
Suhasini held the door as if she was ready to close it. Swadheenta went out quietly, wondering what had come upon her mother in law. Should she talk about it with Adarsh ?
