One of the Biggest festival of Punjab and Haryana is Lohri.
It is celebrated on the 13th of January during the end of the month Paush,
a day before Makar Sankranti.

It is celebrated in the joyousness occasion of the ripening of the Rabi (winter) crop, promising a healthy harvest. The day following Lohri is called 'Maghi', signifying the beginning of the month of Magh. According to Hindu beliefs, this is an auspicious day to take a holy dip in the river and give away charity.

Sweet dishes are prepared with sugar cane juice to mark the day.

Lohri marks the departure of the winter season, giving way to the harvest time, a period of warm joy and new beginnings. This festival originally started by the people of Punjab is, now celebrated all across the country and also in foriegn lands where a great population of Punjabis reside today.

Traditionally, Lohri is the time when Rabi crops are harvested.

God is offered peanuts, butter, flour and various food items by the people gratified for the successful harvest. According to farmers calendar, they start calculating their financial year right after this festival.

Dulha Bati is performed as a tribute to the Mughal Emperor Akbar. He was the one to rescue woman who were forcibly sold to the Middle East and also took responsibility of their marriage with men by providing all the expenses. That's way all Lohri songs have the tinge of gratification in it by the people of Punjab.

Children go door to door to perform Dulha Bati and they are showered with sweets and dry fruits and sometimes money for of their entertaining effort and talent. It is inauspicious to turn them empty hand on the occasion.

At night the Lohri collected by the children is gathered together and is distributed in the gatherings during the festival time. Til, peanuts popcorn, gachchak, jaggery and other food items collected are thrown into the holy fire. The celebration starts with lighting up the bonfire in the village central where everyone is gathered for the final celebration.

Everyone sits around the fire and enjoys in their own way. Some sings, some dances bhangra and gidda in the beats of dhol and some offer prayers by throwing food teams in the holy fire in order to show respect to the supreme power. Everyone wears colorful clothes on this occasion. Hindus often pour milk and water around the fire to thank Sun God for his protection to the mankind.
