Found this very helpful article on Times Of India. A must read for all the girls. And for the boys: RESPECT GIRLS AND WOMEN. You came from THEM only.

Friends, Delhi Rape case has shaken the soul and bone marrow of millions of people in the country.. while the society and the government are likely to take some concrete steps to arrest such atrociously disgusting crimes in future, here I share one chain email received froma well wisher which has some useful tips for women to keep themselves alert and safe :

Dear Colleagues,

The recent Delhi gang rape and brutalization of the victim has left everyone in the NCR and across the country appalled and horrified. We want to share some safety tips on this burning issue.

This is must know information for all our Women employees. Feel free to share this even with members of your family.

1. Be aware of your surroundings. Don't let your guard down

a. If things seem even a slight unsafe get out of that place immediately

2. Please trust and make good use of your 'gut feel' or 'intuition' or 'sixth sense' in each & every place and situation

a. There will invariably be signs, however small or seemingly insignificant, that tell or alarm you that all is just not OK. You may not understand it or be able to analyze it consciously, but please do NOT ignore it. It is your personal threat alarm beeping

b. Make it a habit to read and notice these warning signs and go with your intuition to quickly retract yourself, move out or immediately get away from potentially unsafe situations

3. Don't take eve teasing lightly

a. Respond with a stern voice

b. Threaten to take a picture which might scare them away

c. If the eve teasing still persists then immediately raise your voice to gather a crowd

4. As much as possible avoid late night travel using public transport

a. If avoiding is not possible then be sure to travel only on crowded bus

b. Avoid taking road side cabs

c. Avoid using a bus which has no passenger or few passenger

5. While using 2 wheeler be sure to wear helmet at all times (especially at night). Don't stop for any stranger

a. In case attacked, use your helmet to defend yourself

6. While driving a car:

a. Avoid parking at desolate area

b. Look inside the car especially the back seat before unlocking & entering

c. Lock the doors immediately after entering the car

d. Start the car & drive off rather then call someone. Calls can wait

e. Don't give lift to strangers

f. Don't stop your car for strangers, especially at night

g. Take known routes, avoid short cuts which you don't know

7. While travelling at night don't keep your phone in your hand

a. Remember phone is the first thing your attacker will throw away

b. Activate your speed dials which can be used to dial numbers in emergency

c. Keep it in your pocket or at a place from where you can easily take it out & dial a number & leave it on

d. Once the number has been dialled start shouting & try to speak out your location so that the other person can inform police about your location

e. If you have a smart phone then install emergency apps which can send sms to known people & can even dial police no. in case of emergency

8. After getting dropped don't stay outside to take a call

a. Take calls on your phone only when you have entered your home & not outside

9. If you feel that someone is following you immediately rush to a crowded place & if need to be don't be embarrassed to shout & gain attention

a. Don't be embarrassed to share such things with your family & friends

10. In case you are in a sticky situation don't be afraid to use anything in your hand to defend yourself

a. Use keys, bottle even your purse to inflict damage to your attacker

11. Following are the most vulnerable areas to attack:

a. Use your knees to hit hard between the legs of the attacker

b. Using your fingers to poke hard in the eyes

c. Hitting front part of the neck on the Adams apple will leave him in a shock

d. Punching in the stomach will leave the attacker breathless & unable to chase you

e. Hitting hard in the chest area

12. In case you feel you are being stalked or regularly followed, don't keep it to yourself because what might be on lighter side now might become dangerous if not controlled

a. Seek help of friends & family

India needs to implement strong law like death penalties for such horrendous crime.

Correct. I think before the police, the girls have to strong and protest against morons...Every girl should carry a pocket knife for her own protection. She may not use it, but at least she can threaten those cowards.

And yes...every girl should be given COMPULSORY karate training like it is given in foreign countries...
If a girl will not know the kitchen work, it will do but karate is a must.

Thank you very much for these tips ...
I agree women have to take stern steps towards such cowards. Women need to help themselves before anyone else can help them. Women should not be told not to out at night instead be given proper protection by government and learn self-defense. Serious action are needed ASAP...

Thanks for sharing this. It actually reminded me of a situation I had to deal with a few years ago on a daily basis. I used to live in a relatively safe town in the US at the time.

I was in 11th-12th at the time and had to work the evening shift at work because my boss was scared to death of being outside at night (after sunset) and he was a 50+ medium sized man, my other colleague could only work mornings so I was left to work in the evening. I usually got off at about 9pm and sometimes as late as 11pm. Although I was working at a mall it was usually pretty isolated around the time I got off or even when I started my shift. But anyway getting to the point, I remember when I used to walk to my car there used to be these addicts sitting right outside of the exit door from the mall and just eyeing all the girls that would walk by. I used to be so terrified, I literally speed-walked/jogged right past them everyday while reciting "Waheguru" non-stop until I sat in my car and drove away. One day one of they guys came up to me and started saying random things, I ignored and started walking faster. Then another guy came up to my car after I sat in and said I dropped money on the ground, again I paid no attention and just drove off like a mad woman, that was the most terrifying day of my life. I went home and told my mum and brother about everything, from that day forward my brother made it his job to drop-me off and pick-me up from work everyday, and I must say that was one of the best things I ever did. So I would definitely suggest telling your family about any fishy activity you feel around yourself, they will be nothing less than understanding and supportive.

I know this suggestion contradicts the one posted my the OP but I would say call someone when you are walking alone outside at night and keep them updated as to where exactly you are. I would suggest calling a parent or sibling, just someone you trust and know will be there for you if you need help. I used to call my mum/brother and talk to them until I sat in my car and locked the doors. That way they knew exactly how far away I was and how long it would take me to come home. If there was ever a time when I was late they would know where I would be. Use a Bluetooth device that way you can keep your phone in a pocket or something and still be able to talk.

Another thing let your family know what route you will take home, especially if you have more than one option.

DO keep pepperspray with you, it will give you sometime to run away after using it.

If you can find/buy one keep a taser (sp?) gun as well that will knockout your opponent(s) for a while, again giving you enough time to run away.

Stay safe and alert ladies.
