England wary of N Zealand threat

Sidebottom has been in fine form, taking six wickets on the tour so far

England won their two warm-up matches before beating the Black Caps in back-to-back Twenty20 internationals. "We're playing well and confidence is high but it's important not to get complacent," Sidebottom told BBC Sport. "They'll want to come hard at us so it won't be easy but if we play like we have been we've got a good chance."

Sidebottom has been the pick of England's bowlers on the tour to date, taking six wickets and finding a consistent line and length to trouble an under-strength New Zealand side. Key all-rounder Jacob Oram, who missed the second Twenty20 game with a hamstring injury, is confident of being fit for the opening ODI but New Zealand are still sweating over the fitness of captain Daniel Vettori. The Kiwis, who are also depleted by the loss of Stephen Fleming to retirement and Shane Bond to the rebel Indian Cricket League, look a shadow of the side that reached the 2007 Cricket World Cup semi-finals. Sidebottom is refusing to take anything for granted, although he admitted they are not the force the once were. "Maybe but they're still a good side and there are some good players making their way into the team," said the Nottinghamshire bowler. "They'll want to prove themselves so that makes it tough. But we've got a young side, we've gelled well together and we've won our last two ODI series'. "We're confident going into this one but we're not going to go in thinking we're going to win 5-0 because it's going to be a tough series, one we're looking forward to." Vettori rates his chances of being fit for the match as "six or seven" out of ten and indicated that a decision would be made as late as possible.

His side's most recent one-day series saw them beat Bangladesh 3-0 but that was preceded by defeats in Australia and South Africa. The 29-year-old spinner missed both Twenty20 defeats against England but is confident the Kiwis can get back to winning ways. "England played well and out-performed us in all three facets of the game and we've got to find a way to match them," said Vettori. "The 50-over game is something we've played well at over the years. We've got a relatively new side that hasn't experienced a lot of success yet so this is our first opportunity to do it. "We're expecting a win and nothing less than that. We know our performances weren't what they needed to be in the Twenty20 games but we still feel we've got a side there that can not only compete but beat England."

England celebrate their Twenty20 victory in Christchurch

England captain Paul Collingwood wants to take the "winning habit" into the one-day series after beating New Zealand 2-0 in the Twenty20s. England won the first match by 32 runs and the second by 50, with commanding displays with both bat and ball. "It is a great start for us. We can take a lot of confidence from these two games, I think all the players did really well," said Collingwood. "We posted two good totals and defended really well. You can't ask for more."

The first of five one-day internationals is in Wellington on Saturday. Collingwood took individual man-of-the-match plaudits in the second Twenty20 match with an important 54 following a clatter of quick wickets. He said: "We could have played better in certain areas - we lost four quick wickets - but we regained the momentum.

"We were never really in the hunt. They put on a very competitive total and we never got going at the top of the order," he said. "We are certainly not looking for excuses. "The good thing is in the shorter version of the game it does not take a lot to turn it around. "We have to put these two games behind us and make sure we come back stronger and more confident." Ryan Sidebottom took five wickets in the two matches, bowling with superb control. He said: "I expected the ball to swing [in Christchurch]. It didn't, so it was just a case of trying to bowl full knowing they had to try to hit out. "Once we identified that I think we killed it. The one-day series is going to be tough but we're looking forward to it."

NZ is playing awfully...I mean they lost both T20s badly!! they lost one by 50 runs..thats too much for a T20!!! 😕
I hope they pull up their socks and give us some good cricket!!
