World Twenty20 over for Ponting
Ricky Ponting
Ponting injured his hamstring in the loss to Pakistan
Australia have confirmed Ricky Ponting will take no further part in the World Twenty20 because of a hamstring injury.

The skipper sustained the problem in Tuesday's defeat by Pakistan and missed the win over Sri Lanka which secured his side's place in the semi-finals.

His recovery is going well but chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch said the 32-year-old would not play in the final stages in South Africa.

Ponting will, however, travel with the squad for a forthcoming tour of India.

Australia are due to fly out to India on Tuesday ahead of a seven-match one-day series which kicks off on 29 September and Brad Haddin has been added to the squad as cover.

"Ricky is making excellent progress following his hamstring strain in the game against Pakistan," said Hilditch.

"Although Ricky's injury is very disappointing it gives us an opportunity to recognise the outstanding performances of Brad Haddin domestically and in his limited opportunities for Australia in the past 12 months."

The injuries are starting to add up for Australia, with all-rounder Shane Watson limping out of the win over Sri Lanka, having returned to the side as Ponting's replacement.

Physio Alex Kountouris confirmed: "Shane felt some soreness in the left hamstring during today's game and we will continue to assess this over the next 48 hours before any decision is made regarding his availability."

Australia have already made one change to the squad originally named for India with Tasmanian fast bowler Ben Hilfenhaus replacing Shaun Tait, who has yet to recover from an elbow injury.

"Unfortunately Shaun hasn't recovered in time from his surgery to be able to take part in the upcoming tour to India," Hilditch commented.

"He is however expected to make a complete recovery in the next few weeks and commence preparation for what is going to be a very exciting Australian domestic summer."
