Cellphone chip promises to counter radiation

The E-waves phone chip is a small circular gadget (in green) that sticks on the back of a phone to neutralise harmful rays

Brussels: Belgian health products firm Omega Pharma has launched a chip that, it claims, can counter potentially damaging radiation from mobile phones.

The scientists who developed the 'E-waves chip' argue there is a growing body of evidence showing a link between mobile phone use and the growth of tumours.

"It's like smoking. Eventually, we reached a point where the health impact is widely acknowledged," said Omega Pharma's chief executive Marc Coucke.

However, other scientists around the world remain split down the middle between those that think there is a risk, and other researchers who think there is insufficient evidence to show that mobile phones are unsafe.

The E-waves gadget is a circular chip as small as a coin, which you can stick on the back of your cellphone, near the battery.

The chip then sends out a wave that interferes with and also neutralises the harmful electromagnetic radiation emanating from the phone, the company said.

Tests on the chip showed that it lessened symptoms that might be associated with mobile phone use, such as headaches and loss of concentration, the company added.

It also neutralised the heating effect within the body produced by electromagnetic signals.

Omega has only 30,000 chips ? costing 38.95 euros each (Rs 2,500 approx) ? available currently; but Couke said that production can be ramped up for foreign expansion.

Omega will also launch three similar devices designed for use in the car, a computer, and in the home.
