Via Com 18, the media house producing the popular show Comedy Nights With Kapil recent claim of having copyright on character Guthi, warning other production houses to not adapt the character in any form in any program, doesn't appears to be a fair deal atleast for famous stand up comedian Raju Srivastava.

"I feel whether it is a stand up comedy act or any character of film or serial, every artistic work is an intellectual property of an artist and the creator should have all right to have copyright over it. As far as Guthi's character is concerned, Sunil Grover has performed that similar character on other shows before Comedy Nights With Kapil went on air. He has recited the character many times to me before the show came in existence. So I don't understand how any channel cam claim to have copyright on the character 'Guthi'. I think Guthi belongs to Sunil Grover."

Telling us about similar situation he has faced during the release of movie Yamla Pagla Deewana, Raju says, "I objected over the usage of my created character 'Gajodhar' in movie 'Yamla Pagla Deewana'. The makers simply asked me do I have copyright on the character? I did not do anything then because l had never thought of seeking copyright on the character. In European countries, artist have copyright on their created work, I think it is high time that we do have similar trend followed in India."

I agree with Raju here! How can Viacom 18 bark if Sunil has performed Guthi several times elsewhere before Comedy Nights even came into existence?!

No one ever created hoopla even Sunil Pal performed his Ratan Noora character in different shows on Star One, Sony, Sahara, NDTV Imagine, Sab TV and even news channels. Viacom 18 themselves used Kapil and Chandan's Shamsher and Harpal acts which they had performed on Star One, NDTV Imagine and Sony earlier - now recently on Comedy Nights. So how the hell can they issues notices to Sunil for Guthi or any other PH and network over Guthi?!

They themselves had NO qualms over using characters and actors from other shows and channels. But yell about rights now!

That just reeks of insecurity of an actor's character becoming popular again on a rival channel! They are trying to stifle and bully others with this lame notice!

If their so called claim is valid then Star and Sony should slap cases on Viacom 18 first for using characters which were first showed on their channels!
