The Anniversary Party
Super Fast Event Planners Office, December 20th, 11:10AM
Shreya ran into her colleague's office. She said, "Haan Sree?"
"Yaar boss ne ek naya event diya hai lekin meri team bahut busy hai. Kya tumhari team le sakti hai?" Debasree asked.
"Haan bilkul. Kaisa event hai?" Shreya asked.
"Anniversary party. Commissioner sir CID team ke liye ek 17th anniversary party organize karna chahte hain. Aur unke strict instructions hain ke saare purane CID officers ko wapas laana hai," Debasree explained.
"Kab ke liye?" Shreya asked.
"21st January," Debasree replied.
"Forensic doctors ko bhi wapas laana hai?" Shreya asked.
"Nahi. Unka koi zaroori nahi hai. Lekin saare officers ka aana zaroori hai," Debasree replied.
"Done," Shreya agreed.
She took the file that Debasree handed and ran out again.

After reading through the file, Shreya looked up at her team. She said, "Guys sab se pehle toh hume yeh jaana hai ke CID ke saare purane officers kaun kaun the aur phir unhe dhoondna hai, unse baat karni hai, aur unhe kisi bhi taran convince karna hai ke iss party main aayein."
"Main research karke saare naam nikalta hoon," Ravi said.
"Phir main aur Angel saare paate nikal lenge," Bluetides said.
"Aur main party ki tyariyan karna shuru karti hoon," Reshma said.
"Reshma tum aapne saath Pari, Ranju, aur Anjali ko bhi le lo," Shreya said. "Main Ravi ki madat karti hoon."
"Done," Reshma agreed.

Ravi came in and said, "Saare naam mil gaye hain. List kafi lambi hai lekin."
"Koi nahi. Bolo," Shreya said.
"Okay. Pehle hain DIG Baldev Raj. Phir ek DCP Surendra Pal aaye the. Unke tasveerein mil gayi hain. Phir DCP Dipanker. ACP Prithiviraj aur ACP Digvijay bhi hain. Uske baad males main hain Rajat, Viren, Vineet, Rishi, Jayant, Vivek, Suraj, Sudhakar, Kavin, Dushayant, aur Karan. Do teen aur officers the lekin unke naam kabhi pata nahi chale. Aur females main hain Asha, Kajal, Lavanya, Kaveri, Muskaan, Divyana, Priyanka, Anushka, aur Mridula. Forensic doctors ke naam bhi laaya hoon. Woh the Dr. Vrinda, Dr. Nyla, Dr. Anjalika, Dr. Niyati, Dr. Sonali, Dr. Alka, Dr. Vaibhav, Dr. Sameer, aur Dr. Amrita," Ravi said, reading off a sheet.
The 7 team members looked stunned at all the names that Ravi had taken. Anjali asked, humorously, "Woh paanchwa naaam kaunsa tha phir se?"
Ravi scowled as the other 6 burst out laughing. Then Shreya said, "Okay ab inhe sab ke paate nikalo aur sab ko phone karne main lag jao. Yeh sab aane chahiye."

Reshma said, "Err...Shreya ek problem hai."
"Kya huya?" Shreya asked.
"ACP Digvijay aur Suraj jail main hain. Aur woh ACP nahi raha," Reshma commented.
"Aisa karte hain jail se special permission lete hain unn dono ko bhar niklane ke liye ek din ke liye. Ab Commissioner sir chahte hain ke sab aaye toh sab hi sahi," Angel suggested.
"Cops ke beech criminals. Wah kya baat hai!" Shreya commented, laughing.
"Chalega. Dono criminals ko cop treatment milega," Anjali said, laughing.
Ravi got off the phone and said, "Okay saare forensic doctors aa rahe hain. Maine abhi Dr. Vaibhav se baat khatam ki hai aur woh bhi aa rahe hain."
"I got the DIG, the 2 DCPs, and the 2 ACPs," Ranju said.
"Aur maine abhi Asha ko bhi confirm kar diya," Pari said. "Mera final approved list hai Asha, Kajal, Roma, Lavanya, Kaveri, Muskaan, aur Divyana."
"I booked a banquet hall for the celebration," Reshma said.
"Aur main catering dhoond rahi hoon," Shreya updated.

"Sab tyar?" Ravi asked.
"Haan. Bas ek baar sab aane lag jaayein toh hotel main theda denge," Reshma said.
"Shreya kahan hai?" Anjali asked.
"Last minute pe caterer ne backout kar diya. Toh woh ek naye caterer ko dhoondne gayi hai," Angel replied.
"Chalo koi baat nahi. Abhi 6 din hain," Ranju said.
"Haan lekin jitna late book karoge utna zada charge karenge caterers," Pari said.
"Caterer koi zada charge nahi karenge kyun ki ab do caterers book kar diye hain maine. Dono ko alag alag cheezein de diya hai taki dono ke paas zada naa ho aur woh back out naa karen," Shreya said, coming in.
"Toh ab sab tyar hai for sure?" Ravi asked again.
"Done deal boss. Ab hone do anniversary party," Reshma said, for the team.

Blue River Banquet Hall, January 21st, 6:10PM
The 8 looked at each other nervously. They had realized as they stood here that this was the first time they had organized an anniversary party for cops. And that too by inviting so many past cops back. Now the guests were going to start arriving and they had to be sure that everything would go well.
As if in answer to their thoughts, the door opened and the current CID team slowly walked in. Shreya whispered, "Here goes nothing."
And then the guests started arriving. Dr. Vrinda and Dr. Sonali were first to arrive. They were chatting amicably about their new roles in their respective cities. They were followed by ACP Digvijay and Suraj who were led in by 6 police officers. The police officers stayed at the door as ACP Digvijay and Suraj came forward. On seeing them Dr. Sonali and Dr. Vrinda's faces tensed. Dr. Sonali said, "Yeh dono yahan kya kar rahe hain? Maine toh suna tha ke inhe dono ko jail ho gayi hai."
"Well phone pe mujhe kaha gaya tha ke Commissioner sir sab ko laana chahte hain toh isli yeh dono bhi aaye honge," Dr. Vrinda replied.
The tension lifted from their face as Divyana came in. She shook hands with both and introduced herself. Dr. Sonali asked, "Tum abhi kahan pe ho?"
"Maine police force chor diya hai. Actually main ek private detective ban gayi hoon yahani Mumbai main," Divyana replied, smiling. "Aur aap dono?
"Main Delhi CID main hoon ab," Dr. Sonali replied.
"Aur main Delhi CBI main," Dr. Vrinda replied.
"Acha isli aap dono aise baat kar rahe hain jaise aap ek doosre ko bahut samay se jaante hain," Divyana said, understandingly. Then she changed the topic and commented, "Waise decorations bahut ache hain. Yakeen hi nahi hota hai ke CID ko 17 years ho gaye hain."
"Yakeen toh hume bhi nahi hota hai. Time kaise guzarata hai," Dr. Sonali commented, happily.
"Yakeen toh mujhe bhi nahi hota hai. Aise lagta hai ke kal hi CID ko chora aur aaj CID 17 years celebrate kar raha hai," Kavin joked.
"Kavin humne sach main CID ek taran se kal hi chora hai. Saal ke shuru main hi toh gaye the," Dushayant said, seriously.
"Dushayant please. Yahan toh thoda sa maza kar lo," Kavin pleaded.
"Kyun? Kya Dushayant bilkul bhi maza nahi karta hai?" Divyana asked.
"Nope. Bahut hi serious rehta hai," Kavin replied.
"Yeh toh bilkul meri taran hai," Rajat said, coming into the conversation as he entered the hall.
Reshma leaned over to the team and whispered, "Yaar aisa nahi lagta hai ke Rajat aur Dushayant ek se hain."
"Totally," Shreya agreed, in a whisper.
"Par yeh dekho. Vineet aur Vivek ne entry maar li hai. Ab atmosphere jamega," Angel whispered.
"I can't wait to see what will happen when DIG Baldev Raj, DCP Surendra Pal, and DCP Dipanker enter," Pari whispered, curiously.
Meanwhile back in the cop conversation, Vivek was saying, "Aur hum dono ab ek saath lag gaye hain Agra main."
"Mental hospital main?" Kavin asked, jokingly.
"Nahi Taj Mahal main," Vineet replied, equally humorous.
"Taj Mahal main kab se previous CID officers ki zaroorat par gayi?" Anushka asked, entering the conversation. It was hard to tell if she was joking or serious.
Not one to take chances, Vivek replied, seriously, "Jab se joke karna band ho gaya."
"VIVEK!" Kajal exclaimed, entering the party and scanning the hall.
"Kajal? Oh my god! It has been so long!" Vivek exclaimed.
The 2 hugged like friends and then Dr. Nyla seized the moment and gave them a bear hug. The 3 separated, laughing, as the others looked on with a confused expression. Vivek explained, "Actually hum teeno ek saath the CID main ek point pe."
"Mujhe maat bhoolna," Dr. Niyati said, smiling.
"Aap ko kaun bhool sakta hai Dr. Niyati?" Vivek asked, smiling back.
"Bhoolna chao bhi toh main bhoolne nahi doongi. Abhijeet ko kaha tha ek baar ab tumhe kehti hoon. Vivek main tumhe choom sakti hoon iss baat pe," Dr. Niyati said, raising her eyebrows ever so slightly.
Vivek and Kajal burst out laughing as the memory of Dr. Niyati flirting with Abhijeet came back. Rishi came in at this time to hear the laughter and asked, "Kya meri entry pe hansa jaa raha hai?"
"Bilkul nahi," Kajal replied.
"Haan yeh log purani yaadon pe hans rahe hain," Dr. Sonali supplied.
"Waise yaadein toh hamari bhi bahut si hain," Suraj said, trying to enter the conversation.
But no one replied somehow sensing that Suraj and Digvijay weren't good to talk to. Dushayant continued the conversation as if Suraj had never spoken, "Kavin yaad hai hamare pehle din pe kya huya tha?"
"Kaise bhool sakta hoon. Main ek hijacked bus ke upar char gaya tha aur undar kud gaya tha," Kavin said, smiling at the memory.
"Aur mere pehle din pe maine ek aadmi ko shoulder pe goli maari thi kyun ki main usse sirf disarm karna chahta tha, marna nahi," Jayant said, entering the conversation.
"Woh baat toh koi kabhi nahi bhool sakta hai," Viren commented.
"Waise Lavanya aur Kaveri abhi tak nahi aaye," Vivek mused.
"Hum aa gaye!" Lavanya exclaimed, making an entry at that exact moment.
"Kya hum main se koi kehta phir entry maarne wale the?" Anushka asked, jokingly.
"Nahi bas timing hi kuch aisi hogi," Kaveri said, smiling.
As the conversation continued and the cops entered, Shreya said, "Guys shouldn't we make a mention to those 4 CID officers who passed away in the line of duty?"
"Sab ko aane do phir," Ravi suggested.
"4 kaun?" Reshma asked.
"Actually main jab naam dhoond raha tha toh mujhe 4 aise officers ke naam mile jo duty pe maare gaye. Tasha, Aditi, Daksh, aur Roma," Ravi replied.
"Main bas soch rahi thi ke kyun ki sab aise CID ki anniversary celebrate karne aaye hain toh unke naam bhi lene chahiye," Shreya mused.
"Ah yeh dekho. Sudhakar, Muskaan, aur Priyanka aa gaye," Pari said, changing the topic.
"Toh kya huya? Asha, Mridula, Karan, aur ACP Prithivraj bhi aa gaye hain," Ranju said.
"Matlab ab bas kuch doctors aur 2 DCPs aur DIG bache hain," Shreya counted.
"Oh I forgot to tell you. Dr. Anjalika aur Dr. Alka ne cancel kar diya hai," Reshma said, suddenly. "Unhone aaj subah phone kiya tha aur kaha tha ke woh aa nahi payenge."
"Boss Dr. Vaibhav bhi nahi aa raha hai," Bluetides said, speaking for the first time that evening.
"Aur Dr. Amrita?" Shreya asked.
"No updates," the 7 commented.
Then DIG Baldev Raj and DCP Surendra Pal came in. A few moments later DCP Dipanker entered as well. Now the entire team was here.
At this time, everyone slowly divided into smaller groups as the conversations all took different turns.
Vivek, Dr. Nyla, Dr. Niyati, Kaveri, Lavanya, Kajal, and Vineet had broken out to hold their own discussion on their time in CID. While Vineet, hadn't worked with any of the former officers, he and Vivek had become good friends and thus he had joined their conversation.
Vivek asked of Kajal, "Tasha yaad hai?"
Kajal said, "Usse kabhi nahi bhool sakti hoon. CID main meri best friend thi woh. Aur sach sach kehna. Tum usse pasand karte the naa?"
Vivek looked away and then replied, "Haan. Karta tha."
"Kya huya tha Tasha ko?" Vineet asked.
"Ek criminal ko pakdte waqt usse goli lag gayi thi aur usne hospital main dum tod diya," Vivek replied, in a sad voice.
"Yeh sab toh hota rehta hai," Dr. Nyla said, putting a comforting hand on Vivek's shoulder.
"Waise Lavanya tum abhi bhi macho woman ho yah thoda sa badli ho?" Kaveri asked, changing the topic to a lighter tone.
"Main kyun badlun? Badlana toh criminals ko parega," Lavanya said, confidently.
Kaveri and Vivek hid a laugh at that. Lavanya asked, "What?"
Vineet supplied, "Woh dono tumhare confidence pe hans rahe hain."
"Confident hona koi buri baat nahi hai. Aur Lavanya toh bahut confident hai," Dr. Niyati commented.
As this discussion was going on here, Asha, Dr. Vrinda, Viren, Jayant, Mridula, and Sudhakar had broken out into their comfort group. Asha had worked with all of them and thus knew how they were doing now. This group was a more serious bunch. They were discussing cases they had had in the previous few years in their new roles.
Jayant said, "Aur do saal pehle Delhi main ek bahut baara bawal ho gaya tha. Dr. Vrinda aap ko toh yaad hoga."
"Woh case kaise bhool sakti hoon. Ek aadmi ajnabee logon ko maar raha tha," Dr. Vrinda said, remembering the case and shivering slightly.
"Kya? Lekin kyun?" Viren asked.
"Usko mental problem thi. Usse lagta tha ke sab log usse maarne ke liye aa rahe hain," Jayant replied.
"Yeh toh bilkul waise hai jaise last year Chennai main huya," Asha commented. "Ek ladki ne aapne parivaar walon ko maara, phir aapne neighbours ko, aur phir unhe logon ko jo uske ghar aate the. Bees logon ko maara tha usne isse pehle ke woh pakdi gayi."
"Waise Asha tum Chennai main kam kaise kar rahi ho? Tumhe toh Tamil nahi aati hai," Mridula asked.
"Kam ho raha hai Mridula. Wahan pe kafi logon ko Hindi aati hai. Aur waise bhi CBI main Hindi main language hai. Aisi koi requirement nahi hai ke Tamil bhi aani chahiyi," Asha replied.
"Sudhakar tumhara kaise chal raha hai?" Viren asked.
"Thik chal raha hai. Woh baat nahi hai jo yahan thi lekin Pune police force bhi thik hai," Sudhakar replied.
"Tum toh Pune main hi ho. Kabhi bhi wapas yahan aa sakte ho. Hum log toh desh ke kone kone main chale gaye hain," Mridula commented.
"Haan lekin parivaar wale wapas nahi aana chahte hain. Toh kabhi yahan aa nahi paonga shayad," Sudhakar said.
"Kum se kum sab se milne hi aa jaaye karo," Asha said.
"Woh toh hum logon ko bhi karna chahiye," Jayant said.
"Of course karna chahiye. 17 saal ho gaye hain CID ko. Yakeen hi nahi hota hai. Aur ek baar humne CID chor diya toh wapas mudh ke dekha hi nahi," Asha commented, both happy and sad at the same time.
"Ab toh main contact main rahonga. Itni asaani se chorne wala nahi hoon," Viren said, determinedly.
The girls were having a different conversation. Muskaan, Divyana, Priyanka, Anushka, and Dr. Sonali were discussing life and, surprisingly, things like fashion and entertainment.
Muskaan asked, "Divyana tumhara kam kaise chal raha hai private detective ki taran?"
"CID se toh better," Divyana replied, a little coldly. She had yet to forgive Muskaan for taking credit for something that she had discovered.
"Dr. Sonali aap ko last weekend ke Star Guild Awards ke baare main kya kehna hai?" Anushka asked.
The 2 worked together in Delhi CID so were comfortable with each other. Dr. Sonali replied, "Anushka mere hisaab se ache the. Lekin mujhe aaj kal award shows itne pasand nahi rahe."
"Aisa kyun?" Priyanka asked.
"Kyun ki koi bhi ache kapde pehen ke nahi aata hai. Sab ajeeb se kapdon main aate hain," Dr. Sonali said, laughing.
"Aisa toh kuch nahi hai. Bahut se log ache kapde pehnte hain," Divyana objected.
"Haan pehnte hain. Males pehnte hain," Dr. Sonali said, still laughing.
"Ab obviously aap ko toh yehi dikhega," Anushka joked.
There was an all boys group as well. Rajat, Rishi, Kavin, Dushayant, ACP Prithiviraj, and Karan had separated to discuss the grand way CID's 17th anniversary was being celebrated.
Rajat commented, "Waise ek baat notice ki? Hum sab toh yahan pe hain aur abhi ki CID team sab ek saath bhete hain wahan. Aur hum unse mil bhi nahi sakte hain."
"Lagta hai kuch aur surprise planned hai abhi," Kavin replied.
"Pata nahi aur kya kya surprises planned hain. Pehle hi jaise surprises kum the. Jab phone aaya tha toh maine sab se pehle yehi socha ke yeh koi prank call hai. Main CID main ek case ke liye tha. Aur phir bhi mujhe phone aaya," Rishi commented, looking at the event planning team.
"Tum toh phir bhi ek main officer the. Main toh hamasa peeche hi raha. Phir bhi inhe main yaad raha aur mujhe bulaya," Karan commented, sounding slightly proud at having made a mark.
"Main bhi surprised hoon ke unhone mujhe bulaya. Main toh aise waqt pe CID ka ACP bana tha jab sab ACP Pradyuman ke saath khade the aur mere khilaaf bhi ho sakte the," ACP Prithiviraj said, peevishly.
"Waise Kavin tumhe aise kyun lagta hai ke kuch aur surprise planned hai?" Dushayant asked, suddenly.
"Bas aise hi. Jis taran se woh sab upar bhete hain, aur event team unke aage khadi hai usse yehi lagta hai," Kavin replied, thoughtfully.
"Nahi bhi hai. Tab bhi woh unhe seats ko deserve karte hain. Hum sab toh aaye aur gaye lekin unhe main se kuch officers toh 17 saalon se wahani hai," Rajat said, praisingly.
"Aur nahi toh kya. ACP sir, Abhijeet sir, Daya sir, Freddy sir, aur Dr. Salunkhe sir shuru se wahan hain," Karan agreed.
"Aur chahiye kuch bhi ho unhone sab ko bulaya. Kisi ko nahi chora," ACP Prithiviraj agreed.
Suraj and Digvijay were fighting, meanwhile. Suraj accused, "Yeh sab tumhare wajah se huya hai! Tumhare baaton main aa ke main CID main daraar peda karne chala gaya aur aaj jail main hoon aur yahan bhi koi baat nahi kar raha hai mujhse."
"Meri wajah se? Acha? Tumhe promotion nahi chahiye tha? Tumhe CID ka ACP nahi bana tha? Kam tum karo aur bill mere naam pe phado?" Digvijay exclaimed, angrily.
"Jaise mujhe ACP Pradyuman se purana badla lena tha. Jaise mujhe DCP bana tha. Jaise mujhe galat kam karte huya pakda gaya tha," Suraj returned.
Finally, DIG Baldev Raj, DCP Surendra Pal, and DCP Dipanker were standing in a corner quietly, smiling. They had been there in the beginning when CID had first started and now CID had come ahead 17 years and was entering its 18th year and still going strong.
Shreya checked her watch and said, "Guys 7 baj gaye. Aage bhadiyan?"
"Haan," Bluetides agreed.
Shreya, Bluetides, Ravi, and Angel climbed up onto the stage. Shreya took over the microphone first and clearing her throat said, "Hello everyone."
Then she waited as the conversations died down and everyone turned to look at. Suddenly realizing that she was in the limelight, Shreya handed the microphone to Bluetides and said, "You speak."
Bluetides hissed, "Me?!! Are you crazy? Angel yeh lo tum lo."
Bluetides thrust the microphone into Angel's hand who played around with it like it was a hot potato and said, "Forget it. Main kuch nahi keh sakti hoon. Ravi bhaiyya aap bolo."
She put the microphone in Ravi's hand who looked at the 3, sighed dramatically, and then said, "Aaj hum logon ne aap sab ko yahan isli bulaya hai kyun ki CID aapni 17th anniversary mana raha hai aur aapne 18th year main kadam rakh raha hai. Aap sab kabhi naa kabhi CID ke inhe 17 saalon main unka hissa the aur isli aap se acha kaun hai jinke saath CID maana sakte hain."
Hearing Ravi speak, the other 3 got confidence. Ravi handed the microphone to Angel who said, "Lekin saath hi saath hum unhe char officers ko nahi bhool sakte hain jinhone line of fire main aapni jaan kho di. Toh chaliye ek minute ka moun karte hain unhe char officers ke liye. Tasha, Aditi, Roma, aur Daksh."
She handed the phone to Bluetides and then everyone fell silent for a minute to remember these 4 great officers. After the minute was over, Bluetides said, "Aur aaj hum sab ne aap sab ke liye yeh party organize ki hai. Lekin aap log soch rahe honge ke yeh sab CID officers yahan kyun bhete hain."
Bluetides handed Shreya the microphone who finished, "Woh isli kyun ki pehle Commissioner sir inhe sab ko ek medal present karna chahte hain aur phir...ASLI PARTY SHURU HOGI!"
With that the 4 came off the stage and the Commissioner came on. After presenting all the officers with a medal, the dinner came out and the party began.
A lonely house, Past midnight
A person was working on something, surrounded by many book, papers, research journals, many equipments and charts. He was recording readings from a machine into table, feeding them to a computer. After readings are entered, he started working on them. His facial features show determination and some tiredness. After couple of hours, he shook head in disappointment and banged on the table to indicate that he could not find what he wanted to. He looked at clock which showed 2:45 AM. " ab toh sona hai" he sighed and moved to other room after locking his lab properly.
Next day morning, CID forensic section
Forensic lab was busy as new case is reported. CID cops found no body but a lot of blood in a house which indicate possibility of murder. Dr Salunkhe and his two assistants Dr Tarika and Dr Vaibhav were busy analyzing blood samples. Their work was interrupted as ACP Pradyuman, Sr Inspector Abhijeet and Sr Inspector Daya stormed in.
ACP sir: "kya salunkhe kuch pata chala?"
Dr salunkhe: " haan boss, ab tak ye pata chala hai ki is khoon alag alag insaan ka hai"
Daya: "matlab doctor saaab, ek se jyada log ghayal hue ya phir unka ..." his last words trailed off as Dr Tarika interrupted.
Dr Tarika : "nahi daya .."
Abhijeet turned his attention to Dr Tarika.
Abhijeet: "wah Tarika jee, aap humesha kuch suraag toh dhoond leti hai humare liye... vaise kitna kaam karte hai aap, aap ko toh thora aaram karni chahiye"
Daya bit his smirk while ACP sir shook his head and looked at Dr Salunkhe, with many questions and "hey bhagwan" expression in his eyes
Dr Salunkhe (almost jumped on): " bhai saab ye Dr Tarika jo bhee karegi, meri guidance me hee na karegi, thora tareef muse bhee dedo"
Abhijeet: "arey kyon nahi doctor saab, aap .. aap ko koun nahi jaanta"
This irritated ACP sir even more and Daya suddenly found walls fascinating.
Dr salunkhe (joy tone): " hai na phir karo mere bhee tareef"
Rest in the lab chuckled at his innocent acts and suddenly
ACP sir: " hogaya, ab case ke bare me baat kare?"
Discussion turned back to business and it is reviled that the blood is obtained from blood bank and further investigation leads to arrest of gang who used to sell stolen blood from blood bank for money in black market and used the house as their storage. The gang is handled to local police.

Dr Salunkhe residence, 8 PM
A car stopped at gate. Security guard came out, verified the guest and opened the gate after saluting. ACP sir got out of the car and rang bell. Once... Twice... thrice no response
ACP sir murmured while taking out his phone: " Muse khana pe bulaya aur ye kaha reh gaya"
Door opened just in time as if answering phone. ACP sir entered the house and looked around. He found bag of fresh vegetables on dining table and no signs of cooking. ACP sir raised his eyebrow with a smirk.
ACP sir: " Kya salunkhe khana tayaar hai, bari khushboo aarahi hai kitchen se. Kya bole the tum aaj subah, bhendi ki sabji nahi kuch kya thaa wo bahe?"
Salunkhe sir knew he was caught and in low tone: " paneer makhani "
ACP sir: " haan ready hai na "
Salunkhe sir: " wo wo kaam me busy thaa , socha baad me kar loon ga phir ..."
" bhool gaya, haina " ACP sir completed sentence while moving towards refrigerator to grab a bottle of water. Then ACP sir noticed that there are no other vegetables, left over curries etc in fridge and all he found was a bread packet and some fruits. It was obvious that Salunkhe sir was not cooking properly and always buried in work. A wave of pain passed through the rigid face of ACP sir, his smile turned to sad one as he looked back to the disappointed face of his friend.
ACP sir in anger: " Salunkhe, kya hai yeh? theek se khana nahi khayega toh tabiyat kharap hogi na, bacha thodi ho ki koi tuse yeh sub bataye?, khud doctor ho na"
Soon he changed his tone to naughty one,
ACP sir: " agar chutti leni hai toh pooch lete, chalo, ab aisa muhn latkakae kyon khade ho kisi restaurant pe chalte hai, aur bill tu dega "
Salunkhe sir jaw dropped to floor as he knew bill will be very heavy, but he had no choice after all he was supposed to be the host. ACP sir arranged vegetables in refrigerator while Salunkhe sir changed his T shirt, closed room doors and ready to go.
ACP sir: " purse aur money mat bhoolna"
Salunkhe : " haan haan liya hoon aur bill mei doonga ab khush?"
and they moved to nearby eatery place. They had good dinner while chatting and came back home as ACP sir left his car at Salunkhe sir home. Salunkhe sir made a cup of green tea for both while, ACP sir made himself comfortable on deewan. While they were sipping tea, ACP sir kept looking at a room and asked
ACP sir: " Salunkhe, kuch progress hua?"
Salunkhe sir needed no explanation about what is in question. He sighed and said,
Salunkhe sir: " we are almost there Pradyuman. aur thoda sa mehnat karna hai aur poora hojayega. Maine ek recent research paper ko mangwaya hai, usme bahut kuch information mila jo kaam ka hai. darasal mei wahi paper padh raha tha"
ACP sir nodded in agreement and said" ab mei chalta hoon, apna khyal rakhna"
Salunkhe sir nodded and a tiny smile appered on his face on the concern that sounded in rigid voice of his friend while he said " khyal rakhna" . ACP sir left and Salunkhe sir closed door with murmur " yeh aadmi toh kata meetha hai" smiled and said " gudbud hai " and let the smile spread on his face.
After few months,
Salunkhe sir is working on his lab with a system board in front of him and taking some readings from machine adjacent to it, while adjusting some dials at various other machines. A wave of joy spread over his face gradually as his eyes went over the readings. Finally he got up with a big "eureka" escaping his mouth and started jumping with extreme joy. He dialed ACP sir number and barked into phone as soon as call was taken " Pradyuman, success, success, I did it ". On the other side, ACP sir face lit up on hearing such a celebration over phone, he said happily as " wah bhae congrats, mei abhi aaya" and headed towards Dr Salunhe house right away.
****
Next day morning. Forensic lab
Forensic lab is looking crowded with presence of all CID officers excited about the new equipment, which is just a system board with much wiring and some reading machines attached to it.
ACP sir cleared his voice to get every ones attention: "Our mission for today is to track a person/gang and take into custody alive. This new device invented by Salunkhe will track signal and lead us to where they are hiding. He/She had been eves dropping our forensic lab using a hidden micro phone and this machine helps to detect where the signal is being received. Here is the plan. Team will divide in to two. Salunkhe, you will be involved in conversation at lab along with Daya, Tarika and Freddy. Make sure that you keep the conversation very interesting and as if you are investigating on very serious case. You got script ready right?" he paused. He got "Yes" as reply from all four. " Sachin, you will sit in that sound proof room, keeping eye on the indicator and keep updating me over phone if indicator is still on, that indicator tells that micro phone is active and someone is listening ", Sachin replied " yes sir", " Abhijeet, Purvi, Nikhil,Pankaj and Shreya, You will join me and we catch the culprit. Keep guns loaded, wo log khatarnak bhee ho sakte hai, and we plan to catch them alive. Don't shoot unless absolutely necessary. There could be more people behind them" he finished. All officers said " yes sir".
Freddy murmured in Daya ear: " Sir, yeh kaam karega na?" He is too skeptic on the flimsy wiring that looks so fragile " ek wrong wire toh urr gaya mehnat" he continued.
Daya murmured back: " doctor sab se pooch lo" and put on innocent face. Freddy nodded as no and Abhijeet who was close by smirked. Suddenly, indicator light that went on. ACP sir left with team immediately with equipment.
Salunkhe sir started : " Daya aaj mujhe ek bahut khas baat pata chali hai"
Daya : " wo case jo bahut high profile ki humara code X wali , hain adoctor sab"
Salunkhe sir: " haan wahi"
They continued the conversation and Sachin was observing the indicator. Fortunately it was on. 20 minutes passed and CID team could locate the house which they suspect as place of culprit.
Abhijeet: " Purvi aur Nikhil aap log yaha gadi me rookna aur nazar rakhna"
ACP sir: " Abhijeet, this house has one main door and one rear door, I will go to back door with Shreya. Tum aur Pankaj main door se jana"
They attack as planned, there was just a man and his assistant inside house and they were totally not prepared for the attack. It was a lost battle for the culprit and he and his assistant were arrested. Abhijeet called Daya to inform they can stop the play at Forensic lab. It took another 20 minutes to bring culprit to CID bureau confession chair.
ACP sir: " kya naam hai tera"
Man laughing madly : " Amar Dr Amar.. I am the best scientist in the world. I invented a new a brand new frequency, I am a great scientist a great scientist"
Salunkhe sir: " dimag ki halat theek nahi hai iska, CID me kyon rakha wo instrument?"
Amar: " I wanted to test my experiment and also prove to world. When I presented paper no one belived that such a thing existed. All thought I am mad. So I planned. I made a converter to convert audible sound waves to my new frequency and another converter to get signal back to sound wave. I wanted to listen some investigation parts so that I could reveal to public that I got this insider information through my new waves. Par.. par panch saal se kuch hath nahi laga. Aaj kuch hath lagne wala tha aur"
Abhijeet: " hum aagaye kyon" completed.
Amar: " haan par kaise?"
ACP sir looked at Salunkhe sir and both smirked.
Abhijeet: " ye humare Doctor sab jo hai bahut amazing hai. He found a tracker to track the new high frequency signal aur..."
Amar jumped with joy: " matlab Salunkhe, salunkhe jaante hai ki I found that new frequency"
Salunkhe sir: " haan, you found it. Relax , relax", he said with a bit concern on mental state of Amar.
Amar was taken to custody and Pankaj could not hold it any longer. He finally spoke
Pankaj: " sir, par panch sal se kuch haath nahi laga ise, kaise sir?"
Dr Tarika blushed, Daya smirked and looked at Abhijeet with raised eyebrow, Abhijeet shook his head.
ACP sir with a naughty smile: " wo aap ka Abhijeet sir se poocho"
This confused every one more except ACP sir, Salunkhe sir, Abhijeet, Daya and Tarika.
Salunkhe sir: " muse ye tracker device banane me panch sal lagi, par maine wo indicator tabhi banaya tha"
ACP sir: " That indicator lights up when the new frequency signal is on"
Purvi interuped: " Sir, how did we know about this new frequency signal?"
ACP sir, nodded at absolutely right question: " We have signal jammers activated in building, Right. They were meant to track if someone is tapping our phones. These jammers found the signal, but were not able to stop them or track them" , he explained.
Salunkhe sir: " We knew that signal is high at Forensic lab, and we installed the indicator in forensic lab and jab jab indicator on hota tab..." he paused passing a naughty glance towards Abhijeet.
Abhijeet was too shy as all eyes fell on him and he chuckled, cursing Daya who was showing all his teeth by now like a colgate ad.
Looking at Daya he murmured " idea sahib ki thee aur phasa diya muse"
Freddy: " tab kya doctor saab", He absolutely understood what was untold. But he is taking revenge for all threats Abhijeet made in past regarding bahbiji
Salunkhe sir: " aur kya Freddy, ye Abhijeet sir mere lab ko teenager class room bana rahe the bus", he concluded.
Everyone broke into loud laughter and finally Abhijeet had to speak
Abhijeet: " wo ..wo kuch toh aise hee baat banana tha taki investigation details nikal na jaye. Hum ne socha bus kuch din ki baat hai par " taunt tone " panch sal lug gaye na"
Pankaj : " matlab sir.. ye lab me jo .."
Duo together " YSPT ... Yeh sub plan tha"
Nikhil: " Longest YSPT of CID history sir"
After some chatting, all officers are back to completing file work of various cases, while some left to have a cup of coffee. Freddy approached Abhijeet who dumped his head in pile of files to avoid teasing glances from his friend who kept pulling his leg as " kal se kisko Ji bolo ge?" etc.
Freddy: " Sir.."
Abhijeet: "Kya?"
Freddy: "Sir wo wo aap Tarika ko dinner me bhee bulaya tha wo bhee akele"
Now Daya is extremely interested in the file that's in Abhijeet hand and came to them with a wide smile.
Abhijeet: " Freddy, wo Tarika Ji ne hand loan lee thee paise aur wapis hee nahi kee . Sab ke samne toh nahi pooch sakta na"
Freddy raised both eye brows.
Abhijeet sarcastic tone: " ab khush?" to both Freddy and Daya.
Daya made innocent face: " boss, forensic chalte hai, naya case ke bare me kuch na kuch pata hoga TARIKA JI(stressing) ko"
Abhijeet shook his head and murmured ye YSPT plan toh khatam hua par ye Daya muse zindagi bhar chedega.
Chapter 1
"Daya? Daya!"
Daya's powerful frame vanished out of the door, shoulders slumped and gait careless. He couldn't bear to see it. He did not want to shout; the engagement function was still in progress and guests were applauding as Shreya and Siddharth posed for photos after exchanging rings. The din masked his voice; he turned back to see the rest of their teammates still focusing on the function. Quietly, he slipped out from midst of the crowd and tiptoed out of the hall, past the brazen statues and pillars adorned with candles and lights. The voices grew fainter as he exited the building out into the cool night, wind blowing softly through the rows of Ashoka trees lined along the pavement, their red blossoms glowing in the moonlight.
"Daya?" he called again, his voice now powerful and much clearer.
"Abhijeet?" came the reply at once. From the end of the path, Daya walked forward into the moonlight, his coat still limply slung over his shoulder. "Tum, yahan bahar kyun aaye? Andar function abhi chal raha hai na?"
"Ye baat toh mujhe tumse poochni chahiye", said Abhijeet quietly, walking forward. "Daya..." He paused. He knew exactly why Daya had walked out of the hall, crestfallen and broken. He didn't want to rub salt on wounds.
Daya seemed to have realized, though he unsuccessfully tried to cover up by looking extremely interested in a fragrant blossom that had just landed on his shoulder. "Woh... actually ek phone aaya tha. Wrong number. Socha thoda bahar tehel loon idhar... garden kaafi accha hai na", he said, not making eye contact.
Abhijeet remained silent for a while. "Baat sahi hai. Chalo, ab bahar aa hi gaye hain toh ek round maar aate hain garden ka."
"Haan theek, chalo", said Daya at once, looking only too eager to get as far away from the hall and its occupants as possible.
They walked through the pavement, striped with shadows of the trees, moonlight glinting off the smooth marble of the path. The noise from the within the hall grew fainter, as did the lights streaming out from its windows. The night felt deserted; in the middle of the garden, an ornate fountain was softly gushing water in the form of a small artificial stream flowing through crevices in the stone. The low drones of cicadas and high chirps of crickets mingled. The mournful hoot of an owl reverberated through the night air.
Daya followed the path up to the fountain, folded up his coat and slung it over the nearest bench before slumping down on it. Abhijeet sat down next to him, looking at his friend focusing intently on one of the lotuses in the fountain pond.
"Kya hua Daya?"
"Kuch nahi, boss", answered Daya, not taking his eyes off the flower. "Kaafi tagdi raat thi. Thak gaya... ab party varty karne ka mann nahi hai. Bas ghar jaake so jaaun, kaafi hai."
"Haan yaar, woh toh hai", nodded Abhijeet. He couldn't deny Daya had a point. The night had indeed been harsh; finding out about the murder in Siddharth's room, investigating quietly with a handful of teammates so as to keep the matter under wraps, explaining everything to Shreya, the mission to find and rescue Siddharth and finally apprehending his uncle and sister... it was hard. None of them had come expecting such a turn of events. More than the others, he knew how terrible an ordeal it had been for Daya. All of it.
"Daya..."
"Hmm?"
"Yaar... tumne bahut accha kam kiya aaj. Duty aur personal life ke beech ka farq, sach mein ek example ki tarah rakh diya tumne, sab ke saamne."
Daya was silent for a few moments, slowly lowering his gaze from the pond at last. He didn't turn. "Ismein badi baat kya hai. ACP sir se, tumse, apne Freddy se, Salunkhe sahab se... sab se dekha ye maine, itne saalo se. Aur humein jab pata chala ki Siddharth begunah hai, usko main maut ke muh mein kaise chhod deta?"
"Haan Daya, par phir bhi..." said Abhijeet softly. He was not sure how to proceed with this discussion, ease the pain which he knew was stabbing like fiery daggers in the heart of his dearest, brotherly friend. "Tumhe nahi pata jo tumne kiya, woh kitni badi cheez hai. Tumhari jagah koi aur hota toh pata hai kya hota?"
A sad, wry smile lit up Daya's lips in the moonlight. "Shurkiya boss, par ab bas bhi karo. Ye jitni tareef kar rahe ho meri, main 0.1% bhi uske laayak nahi hoon. Mujhse kya kya ho gaya, tum jaante ho."
Abhijeet looked up sharply. "Daya, please..."
"Sach toh sach hai na Abhijeet", continued Daya, his tone heavy. "Ek ladki ke liye humari 17 saal ki dosti khatre main aa gayi. Sach mein meri jagah aur koi hota, toh pata nahi kya hota..."
"Yaar bas karo", said Abhijeet loudly; a few night birds in the nearby bushes tweeted in alarm. "Woh sab hum nipta chuke hain na. Waada kiya tha ki ab aisa humaare beech phir kabhi nahi hoga. Phir wohi baatein kyun dohra rahe ho?"
"Tumne toh mujhe maaf kar diya Abhijeet, par main khud ko kaise maaf karunga?" said Daya quietly. "Ek baar bhi nahi socha, aisi baaton se kitna bura lagega tumhe!"
"Maine kaha na mujhe tumhari kisi baat se bura nahi lagta!" said Abhijeet desperately.
Daya smiled again, now looking back up at the moonlit pond. "Abhi bhi tumne theek se jhooth bolna nahi seekha na."
Abhijeet felt a sudden chill shoot up his spine. He had last heard those words from Daya's lips in a terrible, terrible situation. Did he not understand? Did people think he was an emotional fool, deciding to opt for a transfer because of an argument? Had they not known what he had faced, endured and vanquished for the past seventeen years of service in the department? Those were not what hurt him. His body and heart were steeled against petty physical and emotional wounds. But when it came to someone he'd grown to love as his own brother, the only one to whom he had opened his inner vulnerable self to and who had filled his once dark and closed heart with the light of love and friendship... that hurt. A lot.
"Bas Daya", he said, a little more forcefully than he had intended. The sudden upsurge of those bitter memories seemed to have strengthened his resolve to settle the issue once and for all. "Tum jaante ho kaise kaise waqt mein humne ek doosre ka saath diya hai. Jab poori team mere khilaaf rahi, tab bhi tumne mujhpe bharosa kiya. Ye sab baatein chhodo na yaar."
For a long while, Daya remained silent and impassive. "Dil kuch zyada hi bada hai tumhara, boss. Pata nahi mujhe kya ho gaya... kya kar daala mere saath inn sab ne." He paused again, silently staring at the water cutting trenches into the silt by the grass. "Main jo sapne mein bhi karne ki soch nahi sakta tha, mujhse karwa daala inn jasbaton ne. Pehle Sonali, phir Poorvi aur ab ye... mujhe toh lagta hai kisi ko chahna hi gunah hai. Jab bhi maine kisi ko chaha, kuch na kuch zaroor hua. Aur iss baar, ek baar phir meri galtiyon ki saza tumhe mili."
At long last, he slowly turned to look at Abhijeet. "Tumse phir sorry bhi keh nahi paaunga, Abhi. Upar waale ne tum jaisa dost diya mujhe, aur maine..."
"Maine kaha na yaar, bas kar. Ab rulayega kya?" exclaimed Abhijeet, fighting back an impulse to spring to his feet. "Aisa kuch nahi hai! Dekho, galti meri bhi hai. Tumhari khushi ki chinta mein maine tumhe sach nahi bataya... nahi bataya ki Siddharth Shreya ka cousin nahi fiance hai. Pata tha tumhe kabhi na kabhi pata chal jaayega... par tumhara dukh dekhne ki taaqat mere paas nahi thi. Tumne bas mujhse ek sawaal poocha, jiska jawab main de na saka. Kisi ko bhi dukh hota na, agar bharosa karne ke baad aisa ho toh. Galti meri hai, Daya. I am sorr-"
"Ab tum kyun shuru ho gaye?" said Daya loudly, looking straight into his eyes. "Aisa kuch nahi hai yaar, tumne kuch galat nahi kiya. Mujhe... mujhe aisa kuch nahi laga."
"Tumne bhi theek se jhooth bolna kahan seekha hai", said Abhijeet quietly, with a hint of a smile.
Several seconds trickled by. The water gushed on, crickets chirped and the owl hooted again, more loudly this time. Daya's expression didn't betray what he was feeling within, and Abhijeet almost felt afraid he had crossed the line. And then, for the first time that night, he broke out into a wide smile and chuckled. Abhijeet laughed with him, feeling a heavy weight slowly ease off his heart. That had been his primary objective, his aim that night - to see his buddy happy and smiling.
"Nahi sudhrode tum, boss", said Daya, shaking his head.
"Aakhir boss kiska hoon?" winked Abhijeet, clapping him on the shoulder. "Kya yaar Daya... tum bhi na."
"Pata nahi kaise sochne laga tha Shreya ke baare mein aise", said Daya, idly prodding at a stone with his boot. "Karna tha duty pe dhyaan, aur kaise chakkar mein pad gaya."
"Ab chhodo bhi, yaar", said Abhijeet. He was glad to see his mood growing lighter by the minute, and felt it was finally safe to speak his mind. "Dekho... insaan hain hum sab. Feelings hoti hain humari. Ussi mein toh insaan hone ki khushi hai. Ek doosre ko chahna, ek doosre ki fikr karna... kyunki hum sab ek parivaar hain. Kismat ne humare apne humse door kar diye... par badle mein humein ye CID ka parivaar de diya. Par pyaar ka matlab sirf ishq waala love' hi nahi hota hai na."
Daya was still for a few seconds. And then, he nodded slowly. "Pehle aisa kabhi nahi socha maine Shreya ke baare mein. Phir pata nahi kya ho gaya... ab lagta hai sab meri bewakoofi thi."
"Nahi Daya", said Abhijeet. "Koi bewakoofi nahi. Tum Shreya ko chahte ho jaise tum team ke har member ko chahte ho, bas. Salunkhe sahab, Freddy, Purvi, Sachin... humare sab saathi. Kamse kam pichle saal se maine jo bhi dekha tumhaare andar, mujhe toh wohi laga. Ab apne aap se poocho, apne andar... kya mehsus karte ho tum."
Daya was silent longer than ever at his words. He began slowly pressing the stone deeper into the moist soil with his boot. He turned his attention towards another one, only to realize it was a well-camouflaged toad which croaked in alarm and hopped off towards the pond. Both of them shared a light laugh over this, and Abhijeet deftly observed Daya's expressions, seeking any hint of what he was actually feeling.
"Ek aur round ho jaaye, Abhi?" asked the latter. "Baithe baithe thak gaya."
"Haan haan, kyun nahi?"
They exited the fountain's area and moved farther onto the northern side, with its rows of rose bushes and fruit trees, creepers entwined around their dark trunks. Ivy spread over the boundary wall. Two night birds were flying together overhead, their mating cries soft and soothing. Daya looked up at their silhouettes against the moon as they walked, his countenance quite impassive.
"Agar woh sach mein mujhe chahti, toh natija kuch aur hi hota", he said quietly at last.
Abhijeet remained silent. Their walk had slowed down as they moved through the bushes beyond which a line of pansies reared prettily.
"Jab tumpe mujhe maarne ka ilzaam laga tha..." Daya continued, still looking up, "tab usne sab ke saamne tumhe -"
"Woh rehne do yaar", said Abhijeet quickly. "Usne apni galti maan li na. Ab purani baato ko kyun yaad karein?"
"Baat sirf utni nahi hai, Abhijeet", said Daya. "Baat ek mindset ki hai. Uske baad toh humne uske baare mein kuch nahi bola. Par ab phir..."
Abhijeet remained silent again as Daya observed the birds playfully tussling overhead, his eyes narrowing. He knew Daya was recollecting many things. The disastrous first meeting at Shreya's house, their unpleasant meeting by the lake, the fiasco at Tarika's birthday party, the news of her engagement in the bureau.
"Mujhe toh yehi lagta hai ab ki inn sab ke baad, agar humare beech pyaar jaisi koi cheez hoti toh sab kuch vaise ho jaata", said Daya finally, coming to a halt and idly plucking a flower from the jasmine hedge. "Na woh mujhse kuch bol paayi, na main. Siddharth ke saath ab kitni khush hai woh. Aur main..." he smiled wryly, plucking a couple of leaves off its stem, "Siddharth ko bachaate waqt hi faisla le liya tha maine. Ab doosron ki khushi mein hi apni khushi hai na."
Abhijeet nodded slowly. "Baat toh sahi hai."
"Woh sirf meri teammate hai, Abhijeet", said Daya calmly. For the first time, the subtle knot in his voice seemed to ease. "Hum dono galat fami mein thi. Humaare beech kuch hona nahi tha... hum ek team mein hain, co-workers hain aur ek doosre ko support karte hain, utna bahut hai. Uske aage kuch tha hi nahi, bas humari galat soch thi."
Abhijeet smiled, and put a soft hand on his shoulder. "Tumhare himmat ki daad deta hoon Daya... sach ko qubool karne ki himmat. Teammates hona bhi toh bahut badi baat hai. Hum sab ne khatarnaak se khatarnaak maukon pe ek doosre ka saath diya hai. Par agar team ke beech ishq hone laga, toh duty par bhi asar padega na."
"Bilkul padega", said Daya, absentmindedly plucking a few petals from the flower. "Aur ACP sir toh kabhi nahi chahenge ki officers ek doosre ke baare mein aisi feelings rakhein. Duniya mein kitne purush aur mahilayein ek doosre ke saath kaam karte hain, ek doosre ke kareeb bhi hote hain par bina ye ishq-visq ke chakkar mein pade huey. Humaari bhi bahut female colleagues thi. Asha ko hi dekho. Ab apni Purvi ko dekho. Mera sochna hai woh sahi raasta hai."
Abhijeet nodded and patted his shoulder. At long last, he felt relaxed. A weight had lifted off his mind and soul. Things seemed to be going right at last. But there was one thing still left... the root of the majority of their problems in that crisis.
"Tumne abhi bhi uss letter ki sacchayi mujhse poochi nahi, Daya", said Abhijeet.
Daya chuckled. "Ab farq kya padta hai, boss. Sab kuch toh khatam ho gaya. Mujhe pata hai tumhaari koi badi majboori hogi, aur tumne jo bhi kiya meri aur sabki bhalayi soch ke hi kiya hoga. Mujhe koi saboot nahi chahiye... tumpe humesha bharosa rahega mera."
Abhijeet smiled sadly. "Tumhe nahi chahiye, par mere dil pe jo bojh hai, uska kya? Mujhe bhi ab tumse sab sach bata dena chahiye. Jaise tumne kaha, ab sab khatm ho chuka hai... kamse kam tumhe toh ye jaanne ka poora haq hai."
He put his hand into his coat, and pulled out the still sealed letter. Daya eyed it with a little surprise.
"Tum isse apni jeb mein liye ghoom rahe the?"
Abhijeet smiled again. "Mann maanta hi nahi tha, tumse baat chhupana. Pata tha bataane ka waqt jaldi hi aayega. Ab ye lo... aur suno, main Shreya ko ye letter kyun nahi de saka. Meri taraf se, ek baar phir tumhe sorry."
Daya took the letter, and before a surprised Abhijeet calmly tore it in half, envelope and all. "Katha prarambh kijiye, Prabhu. Sun raha hoon."
"Accha..." said Abhijeet, looking slightly alarmed by his tone and actions. "Bataun?"
"Bola na", repeated Daya in a bored voice, tearing each half of the letter into quarters.
Abhijeet opened his mouth, then paused and pulled out his phone, and dialed a number. He talked briefly and handed over the phone to Daya, who heard Tarika's voice emanating from the phone. They talked. Daya's eyes grew wider and wider.
"Ye kya bol rahi ho??!!"
Chapter 2
"Shreya? Shreya!"
Purvi moved through the hall, looking far and wide. The buffet tables were growing emptier by the minute. The guests were getting back at their positions, chatting animatedly and finishing the last of their meals while the chamber orchestra was preparing itself for the next round of song and dance. She could see Kavin eyeing her with anticipation from the dance floor. Irritated, she moved through the crowd and saw Siddharth and his father talking to Shreya's parents in the far side. Shreya was nowhere to be seen.
"Shreya? Excuse me, aapne Shreya ko dekha?"
Nobody knew anything. Perhaps she had gone back to her room. Purvi walked up the marble staircase, past the rows of ornate vases and oil paintings lining the wall, and pushed open the teak door only to find the room vacant. There was nobody around to ask.
She could hear Siddharth's mausi calling from the hall again. She moved up another flight of stairs, wondering where Shreya had gone, when she suddenly spotted her from the window, standing on the balcony looking out at the city lights.
"Idhar ho yaar tum", called Purvi, moving out into the balcony. "Kab se dhoondh rahe the tumhe. Neeche log intzaar kar rahe hain. Chalo aao na."
"Haan aati hoon abhi", said Shreya, not looking at her. She continued to lean onto the balcony, hands folded.
Purvi looked at her, approaching a bit closer. "Kya hua, Shreya? Tum theek toh ho na?"
"Haan, bilkul", answered Shreya, a bit too quickly. However, she could not look away in time. Purvi saw that her eyes looked red and puffy. She had been crying again.
"Kya baat hai, Shreya?" asked Purvi. "Tum ro rahi thi na. Kya hua? Ab toh sab theek hai na."
"Kehne ko toh kabhi kuch kharab tha hi nahi", answered Shreya. "Sab kuch accha toh chal raha hai, sab ke liye. Toh phir main bhi kyun pareshaan hongi?"
Purvi paused a bit before walking up next to her. "Koi baat toh hai. Aur kya hai, woh bhi pata hai."
Shreya was silent, and simply continued to stare out into the night.
Purvi continued, "Dekho Shreya. Main samajh sakti hoon tum kya mehsoos kar rahi ho, par ab toh sab ho chuka hai na. Tumne khud faisla le liya na."
Shreya turned to her. "Maine faisla liya?"
"Bilkul", answered Purvi. "Dekho; jab tumhe laga park mein woh gift Siddharth ne diya hai, tumhe khushi hui na. Jab Siddharth party mein naraz ho gaya, tumhe bura laga na. Aaj jab Siddharth gayab ho gaya aur uspe khoon ka ilzaam laga, tumhe uski fikr hui na. Hai ki nahi, Shreya?"
Shreya said nothing, her silence indicating acceptance.
"Maine tumse pehle bhi kaha tha, Shreya - apne dil ki baat suno. Tumhara dil kya kehta hai, khud hi dekho", said Purvi. "Ussi mein tumhari aur hum sab ki khushi hai."
"Pata hai Purvi, Siddharth ko bahut chahti hoon main", said Shreya at last. "Par... Daya sir? Main aise kaise bhool jaaun unko?"
"Agar waqai aisa hai, toh tumhe pehle hi unse bolna chahiye tha na. Jab woh tumhare ghar aaye, tumse bureau mein bole..." said Purvi.
"Arre aise kaise bol deti? Humare senior hain woh!" interjected Shreya. "Meri wajah se unke aur Abhijeet sir ke beech daraar aayi. Tumne suni thi na unki baat. Toh jaake unse kyun nahi bola kuch? Tum bhi toh bol sakti thi?"
Purvi did not speak immediately. The memories of that evening still haunted her to the core. The fight may have been long over, but the effects on all of them would take a long, long time to vanish. She remembered that analogy of Kabir they had been taught in school; a broken string cannot ever be whole again, for the knot always remains. She had enough faith in the legendary friendship of Daya and Abhijeet to know theirs was an exception; it had faced even tempests and still endured. No force of nature could separate them or lessen their love and respect for each other. But still, the pain, the horror of witnessing that disaster!
Only earlier that day, Shreya had expressed to her that Daya had been enquiring about some love letter. Nobody knew what the matter was about. Later that evening as she went up to submit a pending file, raised voices were already emanating from the bureau into the corridor. She did not know where she was, what she was holding on to... for her nothing existed anymore except that vacuum of a bureau and those words hanging there like hellish smoke. "...bharosa kiya tha" ..."agar humari dosti itni sasti hai..." It terribly hurt. All of it. Soon Abhijeet came her way, and it was only then she realized where she was. She made no effort to hide herself. Abhijeet, however, showed no sign of disturbance at her presence, or looked any more hurt than he already was. He merely continued his phone call and turned away to pursue work. It was then that she remembered she still had legs. Slowly, she walked out of the bureau and broke into a run down on the street.
She did not know when she reached home, how she ended up on the bed, burying her face in the pillow and letting the tears stream out into the cloth, her chest heaving and mind clouded with echoes of what she had heard. She hated it, hated herself for witnessing that travesty, but how could she have broken herself away knowing two people she had always looked up to in life were treating each other thus? She knew they were the heart and soul of CID, and the department and the family was nothing without them. Something had to be done. But how? Abhijeet's singular look at her lingered in her mind. He had given her his trust; she knew this was not supposed to be known to anyone else. But Shreya? She had to know. At least the crux of the issue, if not all the details. And only the next afternoon, she again had the misfortune of witnessing Daya ignoring Abhijeet right in front of her. It was too much. She couldn't interfere in the matters of others, but Shreya needed to know. And she then did, being already aware of it.
"Hum doosron ke personal life mein dakhl nahi de sakte na. Woh bhi seniors se", answered Purvi at last. "Tumhe pata tha, aur tumne unse baat bhi ki. Sab theek bhi ho gaya. Par uske baad... Siddharth ke saath hi thi na tum."
Shreya said nothing for a long while.
"Daya sir aur Siddharth, dono ke saath toh tum nahi reh sakti na", continued Purvi firmly. "Tumne Siddharth ko ek wajah se pasand kiya, and you know it. Accept kar lo sacchayi ko, Shreya. Siddharth accha hai aur tumhe bahut pyaar karta hai na."
"Nahi samjhogi tum", answered Shreya quietly. "Koi nahi samajh sakta. Mujhe kya feel hota hai... koi nahi jaan sakta."
"Shreya", said Purvi calmly, "tum jaanti ho na, hum sab saath -"
"Nahi Purvi", interjected Shreya loudly, turning to face her. "Mujhe nahi lagta ye sab theek hai. Maine suna tha... papa ko suna tha mummy se baat karte hue, kuch paise ke baare mein. Phir kuch Siddharth ke baare mein bole, shaadi ke baare mein."
Purvi stared at her for a bit. "Ye baat tumne pehle kyun nahi batayi?"
"Mujhe kuch samajh nahi aaya", said Shreya miserably. "Par ab kuch waqt se lag raha hai... lag raha hai jaise woh meri Siddharth ke saath shaadi sirf paiso ke liye kara rahe hain!"
"Shreya, please", said Purvi. "Woh tumhare parents hain. Aise karne ki soch bhi kaise sakte hain tumhaare saath?! Ho sakta hai woh shaadi mein aane waale kharch ke baare mein bol rahe ho. Jab tak koi saboot na ho, unke baare mein aisa sochna sahi nahi hai."
"Par unhone zabardasti kaafi ki, Purvi", pressed Shreya. "Jab bhi maine mana karna chaha, papa mujhe daant kar raazi kar dete, mummy ki heart problem ke baare mein bolke. Pehle unhone mere saath kabhi aisa nahi kiya."
"Tumhari zindagi ka sawaal tha na. Tumhari fikr hai unko."
"Par unhone kaise soch liya, main itni aasani se Daya sir ko bhool jaaungi??" asked Shreya. "Mere saath kya kya hua... unhe kahan pata. Jahan bhi main dekhun, mujhe woh hi dikhte hain. Siddharth ki jagah mujhe woh suit mein nazar aaye. Card pe bhi unka naam... aur shop ke mirror mein bhi wohi nazar aaye!"
Purvi paused, now really concerned. "Dekho Shreya... ye baat sahi hai ki Sir bahut hi acche insaan hain, hum sab ke liye inspiration hain. Isliye toh kitne log unko chahte hain, unko apna idol maante hain. Par kisi ko chahna sirf romantic hi nahi hota hai na. Kabhi kabhi, khud apni feelings ko samajhne mein humse galti ho jaati hai. Agar..."
She paused again. She didn't wish to go into details about OCD and everything else.
"...agar sach mein tumhe romantic feelings hoti, toh uske signs alag hote. Tumhe pata hai Siddharth ke liye tumne kya feel kiya, warna tumhe uski utni fikr na hoti. Jo sacchayi hai, usko accept karna chahiye na Shreya."
Shreya simply stared down onto the flood of car-lights streaming on the road at the far side. Purvi knew there was a war raging within her. At last, she nodded.
"Wajah jo bhi ho shaadi ke liye, Siddharth accha toh laga mujhe."
"And that's what counts", said Purvi with a small smile.
Shreya nodded and, for the first time, looked slightly relaxed.
"Chalo ab, neeche log tumhara intzaar kar rahe hain", said Purvi, gesturing her to accompany her downstairs.
*****
"Yehi sach hai, Daya", said Abhijeet heavily.
"Mujhe abhi bhi yaqeen nahi hota" exclaimed Daya, unaware that in his shock and anger, he was tearing the love letter into even smaller pieces. "Ek loan ke liye, unhone bech diya apni beti ko? Uski marzi ke khilaaf shaadi karne ko tayyar ho gaye?"
Abhijeet remained silent. All those emotions he had underwent at Shreya's house in front of her father, and experienced multiple times after that... it all seemed to be coming back, like a dj vu.
"Abhijeet, main tumhe blame nahi kar raha par itni badi baat tumhe mujhse nahi toh baaki sab se toh batani chahiye thi na", said Daya quietly.
"Tumhi se batana chahta tha Daya, tumhi se", said Abhijeet desperately. "Tum vishwaas nahi karoge, kaise ye baat meri zubaan par aate aate reh gayi. Shreya ke pitaji ne khaas kar mujhse kaha ki ye baat main tumse aur Shreya se na bataun. Kaise apna wada tod deta unse? Phir socha bhi ki exception maankar tumhe bata doon, par..."
He paused. They had once again steered dangerously close to the topic of their falling out. He had absolutely no intention of touching that raw wound at all. He diverted the topic at once.
"...par mauka hi nahi mila. Bahar cases mein personal baatein discuss nahi ho paati hain. Bureau mein humesha koi na koi rehta tha. Tumhe pata hai Purvi aur Freddy humari baatein sun rahe the. Unpe toh hum bharosa kar sakte hain, par agar baat galti se bureau ke bahar pahuch jaati toh? Bas ye baat Tarika ko bata paaya kyunki unhone usko specifically mention nahi kiya tha. Isliye ab bhi ussi se baat karwayi tumhari. Uske baad... Shreya bhi Siddharth ko chahne lagi, isliye baat uthi hi nahi."
Daya paused for a while to consider his words. "Tumhari baat bhi sahi hai, boss. Par ye toh sirf ittefaq hai ki Shreya Siddharth ko chahne lagi. Agar na chahti toh? Agar Siddharth accha na hota aur uski shaadi zabardasti Shreya ke saath kar di jaati? Main kehna toh nahi chahta, par aise hi ghatiya soch ki wajah se aaj humare desh mein ladkiyon ko itni musibatein jhelni pad rahi hain."
Abhijeet said nothing. He knew Daya was very right.
"Shreya aur Siddharth, dono ke parivar ne jo kiya, bilkul galat kiya", said Daya heatedly, crumpling the pieces of letter to microscopic dust now. "Jo hua woh sab theek hai, usse badalne ki koi zarurat nahi... par jo galat hai, woh galat hai aur unn sab ko unki galti ka andaaz karana bahut zaruri hai. Issi waqt."
"Issi waqt?" said Abhijeet, surprised. "Par kaise?"
He did not have long to wait to know the answer. There were footsteps, and Siddharth and Shreya's father came walking towards them, both of them grinning broadly.
"Arre Daya, Abhijeet... aap log yahan bahar kya kar rahe ho?" asked the latter. "Andar Freddy ji aur Salunkhe ji aapko pooch rahe the. Abhi toh dance shuru hone waala hai, aaiye na."
"Aate hain, sir", said Daya calmly, dropping the remains of the letter and methodically trampling them under his shoe. "Pehle aap sab se thodi baat karni thi. Private mein."
Chapter 3
"Arre yaar Abhijeet, kahan the tum? Har jagah tumhe aur Daya dhoondh rahe the."
"Sorry Dr. Saab... ek bahur zaruri baat hai. Please, turant chaliye mere saath."
"Freddy sir! Sab theek toh hai na?"
"Ek bahut zaruri baat hai, Purvi. Daya sir ne hum sab ko bulaya hai. Shreya aur Tarika ko bhi bulana."
"Pankaj, Kavin, Dushyant... tum sab log bhi aao, jaldi."
The others barely had time to know what was happening. In a short while, they quietly made their way up the staircase, past the guests who were still enjoying themselves in the function, ignoring the song and dance as they moved up the rows of marble railing. They entered Siddharth's room where they saw Abhijeet and Daya standing silently with Siddharth, Shreya and their fathers. The former looked crestfallen and shocked whereas the latter looked down without meeting anyone's eyes.
"I'm sorry, aap sab ko yahan aise bulaane ke liye", said Daya once Pankaj had entered, and all of them were gathered in the room. "Par ek bahut zaruri baat hai, jo ek team aur ek parivaar hone ke naate aap sab ko janne ka haq hai."
"Kya baat hai, Daya? Abhijeet?" asked Dr. Salunkhe curiously. "Case toh solve ho gaya na. Ab kya hua?"
"Ek case bacha hai, Dr. Sahab", said Abhijeet sadly. "Sabse bada aur sabse important case. Aur jab tak ye close nahi ho jaata, kuch ho nahi sakta. Daya, if you please..."
It took about ten minutes, explaining the full story in its entirety. They left out no details. The father's faces grew more and more flushed as their secrets were unceremoniously spilled out in front of everybody. Once Abhijeet and Daya were finished, Shreya's father looked up angrily at the former.
"Ye tumne theek nahi kiya, Abhijeet. Waada kiya tha tumne mujhse ki Daya aur Shreya ko kuch nahi bataoge... par bata diya na? Tod diya apna waada tumne."
"Nahi toda maine, sir", answered Abhijeet calmly. "Maine baat sirf Dr. Tarika ko batayi thi. Aapne mujhse nahi bola tha usko na batane ko. Aur Tarika ne ye baat Daya ko pass ki."
"Ye kaam itna ghinauna tha, agar Abhijeet apna waada tod bhi deta toh kuch galat na hota", said Daya furiously. "Hum ye baat baaki sab guests ke saamne bhi bol sakte the, par aapki izzat rakhna chahte the kyunki ab Siddharth aur Shreya waqai ek doosre ko chahte hain. Par kya aapne jo kiya, woh sahi tha?"
He turned to Shreya's father. "Main aapki majburi samajh sakta hoon, par kya aap sach mein sochte hain, ek loan ke liye Shreya ko shaadi ke liye zabardasti karna theek tha?"
There was pin-drop silence. He now turned to Siddharth's father.
"Aur aap, sir? Aapne socha nahi ki Shreya ko uske marzi ke khilaaf majbur kiya jaa raha hai? Kya paise, loan vagera ek insaan ke free will se zyada zaruri hain?"
Neither of the two men spoke. Shreya gave Purvi a "I-told-you-so" look and approached her father. "I'm sorry, papa... par mujhe aapse ye umeed nahi thi."
"Mujhe bhi nahi, papa", said Siddharth heatedly, approaching his father. "Agar mujhe thoda bhi idea hota ki aise zabardasti ki jaa rahi hai, toh main iss baat ke liye kabhi taiyaar nahi hota."
"Mujhe maaf kar dijiye aap sab", burst out Siddharth's father. "Maanta hoon, paise ka hisaab rakhne mein maine inn sab cheezon ko andekha kar diya. Bahut badi galti ho gayi mujhse."
"Aur main bhi", said Shreya's father quietly. "Shreya...Siddharth... pata nahi maine kaise paison ko apni beti ki aazadi ke aage rakh diya. I'm sorry... ho sake toh mujhe maaf kar dijiye."
Their children forgave and hugged them.
"Ye clear karna bahut zaruri tha, kyunki kisi ke saath aisa kabhi nahi hona chahiye", said Abhijeet with a smile. "Ab sab theek hai, aur Shreya aur Siddharth bhi ek dusre ke saath khush hain. Best wishes to both of you."
*****
All issues settled, they all proceeded to rejoin the guests downstairs. The party was back in full swing. The orchestra was playing out a romantic waltz and Siddharth immediately took Shreya's hand, who joined him happily as they went out onto the dance floor. Kavin and Dushyant were dancing with Divya and Ishita near them. Abhijeet visited the buffet to refill his plate, suddenly feeling truly hungry for the first time in months, and came across Purvi at the table.
"Ab Shreya theek toh hai na?" he asked her. "Kaafi dukh hua hoga usko sacchayi jaanke."
"Haan sir... woh toh kaafi disturbing baat thi. Par ab woh theek hai", said Purvi, looking over at the couple dancing in the distance.
Abhijeet nodded, glancing at them. "Accha hua sab waqt pe clear ho gaya."
"Aur sir... Daya sir? Woh theek hain na?" asked Purvi hesitantly.
Abhijeet couldn't help himself; he broke into a wide smile and both of them glanced to look at Daya, who was chatting animatedly with Freddy and Dr. Salunkhe, all of them laughing at his jokes. His bright eyes and million watt smile took him years back... several years back. The era of Asha and Sudhakar, the era of true bonding and friendship that was not diluted by the presence of a battalion, politics or unnecessary "romance". Although he would never openly express it, he knew what that boyish grin on the lips of his brother of a friend meant to him. It represented all the goodness in CID to him, the very reason he breathed and woke up every morning. And he prayed from the bottom of his heart, that the smile would never vanish again.
"Khud hi dekh sir lo", he smiled. "Pata nahi kitne dino... hafto... mahino baad inko itna khush dekha hai. Ab waqt hai... jo kuch hua, hum sab usko ek bura sapna samajh ke bhool jaayein. Aur aage badh jaayein."
"Haan sir", smiled Purvi. "Jaise aapne kaha, CID ek parivaar hai. Dua karti hoon hum sab ke beech kuch na aaye iske baad."
Abhijeet nodded, silently wishing for the same before joining Daya and clapping a joyful hand on his shoulder as he joined in on their jokes, laughing delightfully, his heart happy and light at long last. All was well.
THE END
1) ACP Pradyuman - "Lionheart"
"Anushasan ka prateek hain woh, CID aur insaaniyat ki shaan hain woh."
Character - Albus Dumbledore from Harry Potter. Like him, ACP sir is revered by everybody in the police world and known for his utmost dedication to law and order, and the sacrifices he made for it. He's fearless, confident, calm and kind. He's a powerful opponent to foes and strikes terror in their hearts with his mere mention, and never surrenders to them. He's gentle towards children. He's very warm and kind towards his team and a true father figure for them, but strict when needed. Whatever he says or does, there's always a solid reason behind it. He knows when to trust, and when to suspect. His intelligence and investigation skills are one of a kind, and he always plans to stay a step ahead of the enemy. He cares a lot in his heart, though he doesn't explicitly show it outside.
2) Abhijeet - "The Vanquisher"
"Apne himmat aur josh se jeeta sammaan, har kadam par badhaya unhone CID ka maan ."
Character - Bruce Wayne from the Batman films. Both of them have tragic incidents in their past that significantly influenced their characters' destiny, and they work hard to overcome that fear. Although initially reclusive, he eventually found company, warmth and friendship in a selected few friends that helped him open up. He has a compassionate heart, and a witty sense of humour. He's also brave, always stands up for what's right whether others agree with it or not. Often finding himself at the end of blame, he fights for himself assisted only by loyal friends. Although cold and rational towards official work, he's genuinely got a soft spot for those he cares for. His investigative skills are incredible, he's undefeatable in battle and he's unafraid to fight enemies, no matter how tough, to protect innocents. He doesn't kill foes, but captures them and lets the law deal with them.
3) Daya - "The Daredevil"
"Shakti aur manavta dono hain unke dil mein, CID ko garv dilaate hain har manzil mein."
Character - Ron Weasley from Harry Potter. Like Ron, Daya sir is a very loyal friend and rather reserved about his feelings. He helps his best friend open up and break out of his shell, and supports him even in very tough situations. There are clashes at times but nothing that their dedication for each other cannot overcome. He's intelligent and brave, and proves it whenever they rise up to challenge against enemies. He's not afraid to tackle danger of any magnitude, defy even the most powerful foes, for his loved ones. Both of them faced life-threatening situations and were helped by friends.
4) Freddy - "The Hidden Diamond"
"Dil unka itna bada ki keh nahi sakte, unka apmaan hote dekhna hum seh nahi sakte."
Character - Rubeus Hagrid from Harry Potter. Like Hagrid, Freddy sir is open with his emotions. He's tough and fearless towards enemies, but is extremely emotional and loving towards his friends. His loyalty towards ACP sir mirrors Hagrid's loyalty towards Albus Dumbledore. He's innocent at heart and mixes very well with kids. He truly and genuinely cares for each and every member of the team, is forgiving and compassionate by nature. Enemies mistake that kindness for weakness, and pay dearly for it. Although an important part of the show, sadly his importance is usually underestimated and he rarely gets his due.
5) Dr. Salunkhe - "Intelligence Personified"
"Vigyaan ki shakti aur unka anubhav, mujrimon ko pata nahi chalega jail aa gaye kab!"
Character - Lucius Fox from Batman. Like him, Salunkhe sir is a brilliant scientist who helps the protagonist defeat enemies with the help of science and technology. His investigation and deduction skills are brilliant, and he's extremely dedicated and persevering in his work. He has a good sense of humour. Sometimes he and the protagonists find themselves at odds, but always make up and truly care for each other. He's extremely loyal towards the team and faced great dangers for them.
6) Sachin - "The Thunderbolt"
"Unki shakti ke saamne dushman dhool mein jaaye mil, apne charisma se jeet liya unhone sabka dil!"
Character - Captain America from the film of the same title/the Avengers. Sachin sir is powerful, intelligent and a dedicated officer who's efficient in work and works hard towards protecting the society from dangers. He has a no-nonsense air and keeps away from all useless things. He has a soft side he rarely shows, and is extremely loyal towards his team. Even in tense situations, he's composed and sensible.
7) Purvi - "Lady Diana"
"Khatro se khelke rakhti hain CID ka maan, naari shakti ko sab se dilaati hain sammaan."
Character - Fa Mulan from Disney's Mulan. Like her, Purvi is beautiful and charismatic. She's very emotional about her loved ones and willing to go to any lengths to help them. She takes responsibility for her actions and silences her critics with her achievements. She's strong in combat and loyal to her comrades. She worked hard to develop herself into an efficient and powerful officer, and glorified the strength and power of women.
8) Dr. Tarika - "Scientific Temper"
"Vigyaan ke saath kaabil hain woh, har case par team ke saath shaamil hain woh."
Character - Neytiri from Avatar. Both of them possess good knowledge of the scientific aspects of their worlds and use it to help the protagonists.
9) Shreya - "Paradise Lost"
"Jis deep ki prashansa hoti thi sab ki baaton mein, ab bujh gayi rehkar nakaabil haathon mein."
Character - Mikaela Bones from Transformers. Both are promising characters that were handled poorly by the writers. Other than that, the end similarities are obvious.
10) Jayawanti - "The Stronghold"
"Jab ho jaata hain unka kaam finish, criminals dikhte hain jaise mashed potato dish."
Character - Madame Maxime from Harry Potter. As we know, the physical prowess of both is emphasized a lot by the writer(s).
11) Nikhil and Pankaj - "The Comic Relief"
"Seniors ka dete hain saath, kabhi sab ko hasane ki karte hain baat."
Character - Timon & Pumbaa from the Lion King. Like them, they mostly provide some humour in the show, but help their team when needed.
12) DCP Chitrole - "The Earth-Quaker"
"Dharti hile aur kaanpe ambar, jaise hi bureau ke aaye woh andar."
Character - Cornelius Fudge from Harry Potter. Insecure at times about his own shortcomings, he blames the protagonists frequently and makes a big issue out of small things.
13) Lampposts - "The Lampposts"
"Aa gaye hain hum, jurm ko karne kam!"
Character - The seagulls from Finding Nemo. They're so numerous, all look the same and say the same thing. Good luck telling one from the other.
Daya: 😕 Kya scanner? Aaj tak main kabhi scanner lagaake nahi aaya. Yeh mera bureau hai...17 saalon se kaam kar raha hoon. (looks around) Aur kaunse darwaze ki baat kar rahe ho? Mujhe koi darwaaza nahi dikh raha hai.
Daya: Kya invisible daraawza? 😕
Oh...ab samjha...Abhijeet, tum aur baaki team members mere saath mazaak kar rahe ho. 🤣
Lekin tum sab ho kahan? Baahar nikloVoice: Sr Inspector Daya, you have 1 minute remaining.
Daya: Abhijeet, bohot ho gaya mazaak. Main aa raha hoon.
...and walks into the bureau...but an invisible door bangs into his face. And he's thrown out into the corridor.
Daya(to himself): Shaayad ACP sir ne koi naya security system install kiya hai.
(aloud): Theek hai boss. bataao, scanner kaha hai?Voice: Invisible darwaaze ke left side mein.Daya: Lekin yahan koi scanner nahi hai?
Voice: Yeh scanner bhi invisible hai...gestures se kaam karta hai. Bas hawa mein 2 baar haath hilaao jaise tata karte ho. Tumhara haath scan ho jaayega.Daya does as told. Nothing realy happens.
Voice: User authenticated! Sr Insp Daya can now enter.Daya enters to find all the furniture missing.
Voice: Confusion detected. Sr Inspector Daya, main aapki koi madad karoon?Daya: Abhijeet, please...main Delhi se abhi abhi aaya hoon, long weekend ki wajah se flight mein ticket nahi mili. Non-AC , sleeper class mein safar karke aaya hoon...thak gaya hoon. Please mazaak mat karo.
Daya: 😕 (to himself) Lagta hai Salunkhe sir ka koi naya experiment hai.
(aloud): Theek hai, mana ki tum robot ho. Ab mujhe yeh bataao ki mera desk aur computer kahan hai?Voice: Sab invisible hain. Jahan tumhara seat hona chahiye, wahan baith jaao.
Daya: Aise kaise baith jaaon? Yeh koi school ka punishment hai kya, homework na karne par teacher bachchon ko aise hi bithathi hai.Voice: Nahi...jahan tum baithoge wahan chair apne aap aa jaayega.
Daya: Achcha??? Dekhta hoon
Daya goes to where his seat is supposed to be and sits'. Automatically Daya feels an invisible chair underneath his legs.Daya: Theek hai. Ab yeh bataao, mera laptop kahan hai?
Voice: Yahan koi laptop nahi hai. Hawa mein haath hilaao aur socho ki tumhe computer se kya information chahiye, tumhare saamne ek screen aur keyboard apne aap aa jaayega.Daya does as told...and true to the robot's words, a screen and keyboard appear and he is able to access all his files.
Daya: Robot, yeh toh kamaal ho gaya.Daya works for 5 minutes, transferring the case details from his pen drive into the laptop-in-air. (An invisible USB port appears, you know...)
Suddenly the lights in the bureau flicker and the power goes off! Daya's laptop vanishes, everything goes dark...and worst of all...Daya's invisible chair too vanishes and he falls down on the floor with a BANG!Daya(in pain): Hello, Robot...kya ho gaya? Tumhara koi generator nahi hai kya?
No response.Daya: Hellooo...
Meanwhile Daya's phone rings. He sees DCP Chitroley's number.Daya: Hello sir
Chitroley: Main 2 ghante se tumhare report ka intezaar kar raha hoon. Kya kar rahe ho?Daya: Sir main bhejne hi wala tha ki bureau mein light chali gayi.
Chitroley: Mujhe koi excuses nahi chahiye. 15 minute mein report bhejo warna...Daya: Theek hai sir...main kuch karta hoon.
Daya walks out of the bureau in pitch darkness, using his mobile's flashlight. He meets the security guyDaya: Humare CID bureau ko kya ho gaya? 15 dino mein sab badal gaya hai.
Security: Haan sir, DCP Chiroley ne bureau ko refurnish kiya hai.Daya: Lekin humare tables, chairs aur laptops kahan hai?
Security: Darasal DCP sir sab kuch raddi wale ko dena chahte the, lekin Abhijeet sir ko pata tha ki yeh naya bureau zyada din nahi tikega isliye unhone sab cheezon on basement ke store room mein daal diya hai.The security guy gives it.
Daya opens and enters the store room - actually quite a large room, which is jampacked with all the old furniture which CID team had used over the years and old records. Daya manages to wade through all the furniture and find a table and a chair placed on top of it. He clears some of the gunny bags containing old unwanted evidences and brings the chair down. He then proceeds to the cupboard looking for his laptop. He fails to find it.Daya: Ab mera laptop kahan hai!!! 😕 Abhijeet se poochta hoon.
Voice: Abhijeet se kya poochte ho? Mujse poocho...bhool gaye...12 saal pehle tum mujhse poochte the...car ke owner ka naam, sketch se criminal record...ab tumhe meri zaroorat nahi?Daya: Main kaise bhool sakta hoon? bohot achchi tarah yaad hai.
Computer: Uske baad tumhara LCD screen wala computer aa gaya aur tumne mujhe yahan fek diya!Daya: Dekho...tumara RAM sirf 32MB hai aur hard disk...sirf 2GM. Aajkal ke processing ke liye kaafi nahi hai. Pata hai...aaj kal ke computers mein RAM 4GM hota hai aur hard disk 1TB.
Computer: Haan haan... aur power off hone par sab gaayab...aur purane laptop ko dhoondte dhoondte yahan aa gaye tum. Meri baat suno...mujhe table par rakho...aur on karo...tumhara kaam main bhi kar sakti hoon.Daya: Lekin yahan power nahi hai. Tum kaise kaam karogi?
Voice: Main hoon na!!!Daya: Tum kaun?
Voice: Main tumhara purana UPS, jo apne desktop ke saath istemaal karte the, mujhme abhi bhi taakat hai!!!Daya : Achcha? Theek hai, aazmaake dekhta hoon.
Daya connects the desktop to the UPS and switches on. Luckily there seemed to be some power in left. The computer starts up with the Windows 98 tone. Daya smiles.
He quickly sends the required files to DCP (through Internet Explorer 4)Daya: Thank you so much...aaj tum nahi hote toh DCP mujhe suspend kar deta.
Computer: Toh mujhe waapis bureau le jaao na? 😛Daya: Sorry...tum samajhte nahi ho...tumhara configuration outdated hai.
Computer: Lekin aaj tumhara naya config wala robot kya kiya?Arey friends...tum log chup kyon ho...sirf main hi boloon kya?
Daya: Kaun friends? 😕Voice: Main!!! Wohi chair jispar tum baithe ho! Neeche gira nahi diya tumhe! Invisible chair sab bekaar hai. Current chali gayi toh kamar toot jaayegi.
Daya: Baat toh tum sahi keh rahe ho. Shaayad main DCP sir se kehkar tumhe waapis le jaaoonga.Chair: 😃 Thank you!!!!
Table: Aur mera kya hoga?Lakdi ke chair par baithkar apne invisible computer par kaam karoge? Tumhe yaad hai? Main wohi table hoon jispar tum, Asha aur Abhijeet lunch karte theDaya: Haan, woh din hi kuch aur the...mujhe woh purana bureau hi achcha lagta tha. ACP sir ka ek cabin hota tha...usme ek table, revolving chair...
TV: Aur Ek TV bhi...mujhe kaise bhool gaye Daya? Maine kitne cases mein tum logon ki madad ki thi?Daya: Haan...jab ACP sir aur Salukhe ko terrace par hostage banaya tha...toh tumhi ne hume bataaya ki wahan kya ho raha hai.
TV: Aur tumhe yaad hai main yahan kaise aaya? 😉Daya: 😆 Tab main hospital mein tha. Kisi ne logon ko khabar di thi ki CID team sabko purane eletronic items ke badle mein naye items dene wale hain. 🤣 Aur tumhare andar hi toh hume us 3 ungliyon wale criminal ka fingerprint mila tha!
TV: Haan... Freddie sir ne mujhe theek kar diya. 😊 Actually ACP sir iske khilaaf the, lekin Freddie sir ko office mein cricket dekhna tha isliye unhone ACP sir ko samjha bujhaakar mujhe bureau mein rakh liya. Lekin ab shaayad mera time aa gaya...😭Daya: Arey yeh kya keh rahe ho? Woh Robot se chalne wala bureau zyaada din tikne wala nahi hai. Isliye Abhijeet ne tum sabko yahan rakha hai. Dekh lo 2 hafte mein tum sab waapas bureau mein aa jaaoge
Daya: Of course...tumhare bina CID bureau ho hi nahi sakta.
Computer: Toh friends...Daya sir hume bureau mein waapas le jaayenge! All of them: Hip hip hooray! Hip hip hooray!!!
Daya: 😕 Yeh kya...main 10 tables kaise le jaa sakta hoon? Humare bureau mein itni jagah nahi hai.Table 2: Nahi, mere paas electric connections hain...isliye laptops mere oopar rakh sakte hain. Main jaaonga
Table 3:. ...Table 4: ...
......
Old black Landline phone: RRRINNNGGG, main jaaonga. Mobile phones humesha out of charge rehti hain. Mujhe power ki zaroorat nahi hai! Mujhe le jaao
Old nokia cell: Mujhe kaise bhool sakte ho! Maine hi tumhare ghar se Hariya ki aawaaz ACP sir ko sunayi thi. Tumne mujhe thank you tak nahi bola!Camera phone milte hi Abhijeet ne mujhe fek diya! 😭 Tumne kuch nahi kaha Abhijeet se!!! 😡
All of them together: WE WANT JUSTICE! WE WANT JUSTICE!Daya: Dekho...main DCP sir se baat karta hoon...mujhe ab nilakna hai!
All of them(louder): WE WANT JUSTICE, WE WANT JUSTICEDaya (to himself): Yeh kaisi museebbat mein phas gaya! 😕
Daya tries to walk out when the store room's door closes by itself and locks.Daya: Yeh kya?? 😲 Mujhe jaane do!
Door: Main un saare darwaazon ki taraf se tumse badla lene aaya hoon jinko tumne toda hai! 😡 Main tumhe jaaane nahi doonga!Daya: 😲 😲
Daya tries to push open the latch, but it's too tight to open. Finally Daya does what he's best at. He raises his leg and gives a hard kick. The door opens.Amid shouts of WE WANT JUSTICE, WE WANT JUSTICE' Daya runs out, starts his Bullet and drives out at top speed. Suddenly he hears a VROOOMMM' behind him. It's the old CID Qualis.
Qualis: Main tumhe jaane nahi doongi Daya...main tumhare saare sukh dukh mein tumhara saath diya tha. Naye Innova aate hi mujhe bhool gaye! Kam se kam hafte mein ek baar mujhe lekar investigation karne jaate!!! 😭
Daya(driving, shouts): Dekho...yeh mera decision nahi tha. ACP sir ne kaha ki 7 saal se puraane gaadiyan CID mein banned hain.Qualis: Main tumhare ghar aa rahi hoon. Main tumhe jaane nahi doongi!!!
Daya accelerates to 120kmph. The Qualis too follows at 130 shouting maine tumse training li hai...tum mujhse bachkar jaa hi nahi sakte. VRROOOM'.Daya turns his head to see if the Qualis is catching up with him when the bike's tyre gets punctured by a nail on the road and goes PHUSSS.
The Qualis catches up with him and the driver's side door opens. Andar aao' The Qualis says.Daya: Nahi...mujhe jaane do!!!!
The Qualis door pulls Daya towards the driver's seat.Daya resists saying: NAHIII...mujhe chodo'.
Daya hears his mobile ringing. He tries to pick it up. He feels inside his pocket but doesn't find it. The ringing becomes louder.Daya: Meri mobile kahan gayi!!!
The Qualis door gets attached to his shoulder and starts pulling him inside.Inside he finds all the old objects sitting in the back seat and the passenger seats shouting WE WANT JUSTICE!'Daya: AAAHHH, chodo mujhe !!!
The pulling and tugging continues.Daya shouts: Kis baat ka badla le rahe ho mujhse???? Please mujhe chodo!!!!
Suddenly it starts raining. The Qualis continues to pull him inside.Daya: Nahiii!!!! please!!!!! Chodo Mujhe!!!!!
Loud Voice: DAYAAA!!!!
Suddenly Daya sees a bright light...his eyes start watering in the sudden brightness. Slowly he looks at the source of the light. And realises that he's in his own bedroom... Abhijeet is shaking his shoulder to awaken him! Daya is in a daze for a couple of minutes and slowly comes back to the real world.Abhijeet gives him a glass of water and says, kya hua Daya, koi bura sapna dekh rahe the kya'
Daya: Thank God...woh ek sapna tha!Abhijeet: Kya sapna tha?
Daya: Poocho mat! Lekin tum yahan andar kaise aa gaye?Abhijeet: Baarish? 😕 Sapne mein baarish ho rahi thi kya? 🤣
Daya: Mat poocho. DCP Chitroley ke naye bureau ne meri raaton ki neend kharab kar di hai! Humara woh puraana bureau hi theek tha. 😒Abhijeet: 😒 Woh toh hai...
*** THE END ***
I jumped out of the car realizing how late I was. I really hoped that I would still be able to get one of the men I called my husband. I didn't want to be late, but sometimes things just happened. And this time it was traffic. Darn that traffic!
I banged the door closed and yelled at the driver, "Take your time! I won't be coming early!"
Then I rushed into the party hall. The last thing I needed was for all my favourite stars to be chosen by one of the other girls invited to this party. I would die or rather be sad on the one day that was supposed to be the best day of my life.
As I raced up the stairs to the hall, a security guard yelled at me, "Hey girl, you left a slipper behind!"
I looked behind and realized that in the rush my foot had come out of one of my blue sequin flats and I hadn't eve noticed. After all my brain and heart were too busy in Lala Land to notice such trivial matters. These matters couldn't block matters of the heart.
I went back down to retrieve it and then continued up the steps. I signed in as Shreya and then raced into the hall. As I entered, I dropped the front of my long gown that I had been holding up to avoid tripping over it. The blue ripples settled and the long peacock gown shimmered in the lights.
But I was too busy to notice. I was looking around for the men of my dreams. Danged it! Salman was already dancing with a girl. He had been taken for the night! But I wasn't going to be sad just yet. There were 3 more men my eyes wanted to feast on.
Danged it again! Varun was gone as well. Tusu had gotten to him before me! No worries. I would deal with Tusu later. She would get a hurting soon for messing with my hubby deary, but right now I needed to find the other 2.
As my eyes rotated about the party, I looked right over Shahid Kapoor and Aditya Roy Kapur even though I really wanted to dance with them. I was one person anyways. How many people would I dance with?
Then my eyes found the man I had been searching for. Arjun Kapoor. I blushed and stepped forward, my feet unknowingly carrying me to him. And then just as unknowingly I stopped. A girl by the name of Anita had been called and she had just chosen Arjun as her dance partner. Really? Danged it thrice! The host was just on surnames starting with P. I was still so far off. By then all my husbands and my crushes would be gone!
I looked around again, searching for the last man my eyes wanted to feast off. And there he was. In flesh and blood. Harshad Chopda. He looked every bit like Sahir as he did on TV. Forget the others. Now I wanted him. And then I got danged a fourth time as Vandy di was called forth and she walked off with Harshad as if she owned him.
I didn't even hear the music as my heart sank. I had lost all 4 of my husbands to fans who had surnames that came before mine. WHY? OH WHY? Why did my surname have to start with S?!! Why couldn't it start with A! Then I would have had been able to pick anyone I wanted!
Crestfallen I went to the tables and found the table that had my name on it. I sat down, my face long and sad. That's when I heard a familiar voice. He said, "Arre Daya yeh pehli baar hai ke main aisi New Year's party main aaya hoon. Ajeeb baat hai ke abhi tak kisi ne hume nahi chuna."
I whirled in my seat and saw the two men, the two men who I saw every weekend on TV, the two men whose friendship had taught me the real meaning of friendship. I blinked once, twice, thrice. I rubbed my eyes to be sure I wasn't seeing things. And then I smiled. Fine. My 4 husbands may have been taken, but Aditya Srivastava and Dayanand Shetty were in the party.
I looked back at the host, blushing. I didn't want them to see me just yet. No first I was going to choose to dance with one of them before I looked at them again. The smile on my face wasn't just reaching my eyes, it was going beyond them. Maybe this New Year's party wasn't ruined after all.
I didn't even think as to why one of them hadn't been chosen yet. I was just glad that they weren't chosen. The song, Aaj Main Upar, started playing. Ironic ain't it? The song totally matched my mood, though at the same time I wasn't sure why that song was playing in a romantic New Year's party. And as if the DJ had read my mind the song suddenly changed and became Raat Bhar. Ah now that was more like it.
The host called out, "Shreya Singh."
I jumped up. Yes! The two men were still free. But oh what a dilemma! I loved them both so much! I had never had to choose between the two before this! And today I was going to have to choose! Oh this broke my heart so much. I looked at them out of the corner of my eye as my mind tried to do pros and cons. Forget the mind, this was about the heart today!
I looked at them and looked and looked. And just as I was about to sit down I saw someone familiar enter. It was another CIDian (no names given). Ah now things were brightening up. My heart did a smile type of thing and I stepped forward and shyly asked, "Aditya sir kya aap mere saath dance karenge?"
Aditya smiled and nodded. He got up and the two of us went to the dance floor. And as we started dancing I noticed out of the corner of my eye that Dayanand sir was laughing. What was so funny? But I didn't notice as Aditya sir and I danced to Sajde from Kill Dil.
I couldn't believe my luck. I was dancing with someone I never even thought I would meet. For that matter I didn't think I would ever have met anyone and yet here they all were. My heart was flowing with emotions, especially that of happiness. This was the best New Year's ever!
To confirm that this was all real, I closed my eyes and quietly and unnoticingly moved my right hand and pinched myself and let out a huge "OUCH!"
I opened my eyes and yelled, "ARGHH!!!!"
I rolled out of bed and fell on the ground with a BLAM as my sister started laughing. I scowled and asked angrily, "What the hell did you do that for?!!"
Ignoring my question she asked, "Whose Aditya sir? And what exactly were you dreaming that you asked him to dance with you?"
In reply I stood up and picking up a pillow proceeded to wack her with it until she left my room. Then I sat down on bed and frowned. It had all been a dream. Damn it! I wish it had been real. I wish I had actually had a chance to dance with Aditya sir. Sighing deeply, I got up to get ready for work as the dream repeated in my brain again and again and again.
