Few of the younger generation will remember serials like Hum log and Buniyaad, which used to be aired on DD in the 80s. They were the baaps of the saas-bahu soaps of today. Urban India would come to a standstill to watch the serials.

Later, Kyunki... Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii were the first mega soaps on cable TV that were aired for years. These days, however, many new soaps don't seem to have the staying power and peter out within a few months. Is it because the story runs out of steam or is it because the audiences do not like improvisations like cast change, time leaps, etc.? Bidaai, a story about two sisters, who face problems in life because of their skin colour, was a unique concept. It was rated the most popular show on Star Plus and its success continued unabated for three years. It was recently taken off air, but not before many changes and improvisations to the story were attempted. Unfortunately, these failed to rake in the TRPs at the end.

But the lead actress and one of the most watched bahus, Ragini (Parul Chau-han) feels that the show made its mark. "The show ran for three years and till it was taken off air, it was running very well," she says.

While many housewives sulked over the end of their favourite 9 pm show, the younger generation was shocked when shows like Dill Mill Gaye (DMG) and Miley Jab Hum Tum (MJHT) came to an end. Both these shows on Star One were very popular. The soaps had fresh concepts of love and romance with a bunch of hot and handsome newcomers. Dr Armaan Malik, Dr Riddhima Gupta, Mayank and Nupur became household names. But audiences did not accept it when new characters were introduced and new faces replaced old ones. The production house does not agree that the show was pulled off air because of low TRPs. Palki, Creative Head of Cinevistaas, producer of DMG, says, "DMG and MJHT were cult shows. But we had to do away with the old ones to bring new shows into the picture. We've been getting a lot of mails and calls to get DMG back, but the channel has to take the call."

Not only Star One, but channels like Imagine TV have also pulled off three daily shows recently. Devi, Jyoti and Do Hanson Ka Jodaa. went off air because of low TRPs.

Rajshri Production's Do Hanson... which was launched earlier this year couldn't survive the TRP race and went off air last month. The production team, however, claims that the show was forced to shut as main lead Shubhangi Atre was out of action due to an accident on the sets. "I met with an accident and was on bed rest for over a month. The serial looked for replacements but went off air," says Shubhangi.

Nikhil, Head of Imagine's entertainment section, feels that every show has a shelf life after which the story loses its freshness. "The TRPs of Devi and Do Hanson... were dropping drastically. Jyoti was doing quite well and it ended on a good note too. We did not want to drag the story any further." he says.

Interesting item from one of the newspapers very relevant to all serials in the current scenario for all channels

Thanks Chalhov. I am very grateful that during the days of DD there were no TRPs around. For me a strong script is a must for any show. Then comes the other departments like direction, editing and acting. All these have to work well in tandem to make a good show which might last long. If any of these department has flaws in it then the show might last for some months but will soon loose its steam.

If Buniyad, HUm Log and other shows were popular that time it was because of their story contents.....They were written by famous writers or based on novels....Focus was on scripts which were more progressive and strong in contents.....it was not so bad earlier but slowly because of TRP all the channels are in to rat race.....Creativity has taken back seat....just to better the TRP they will bring new twist or some change in the story mid way.....Now they follow the hit formula, means if particular soap is getting high TRP then lets lift the track from that soap.....TRP is like a weighing scale, if it dips low then lets put some twist turns in the story and shock the viewers.....Because of this , the essence and content of the story are ruined ....may be this is one of the reasons people loose their interest midway.....

when i was thinking of TRP weighing scales Misty came in to my mind....she is so good with cartoons....hope you will not be offended .....i appreciate your comic sense....

PP Putija, what an article and what a summation by Ducca ! This War will continue even with new set of audience as long as '80s Buniyaad types are never made. No one knew or cared to know what TRP meant. The phrase didn't even exist. Money was the issue then also but supposedly not the prime motivator as TODAY.
Almost 2 years ago I was talking to a prominent IF member on the phone and we went on and on about the quality, the story, the script, the acting, direction, the works and did not stop praising Buniyaad. Alok Nath (most recently in YMGGK on zee) had become a household name in those days and this was the only soap that my mother would sit in front of the TV (back home then) and watch with starry eyes coz the story related to the debacles during partition that she could directly relate to.
Woh din kahan gaye ?
Even if and when CB 2 begins, I suppose the stars are always going to be on edge and having to continue to deal with crazy temperaments of the non-fictional Fiction Heads of the channel, PH, CVs,TRPs (not necessarily in that order !), and god knows what else. As audience, all we can do is sit and watch what they dish out on our plates. Yes, all the Hurculean work we did thru petitions, letters, etc to bring back CB2 is beyond worthy of praise, and kudos to our collective efforts. But now it seems we will have to continue to bang on the heads of these respective bunch of "people" even thru the entire serial while on air, because same ungrateful fate like CB will be unbearable to say the least.

U r welcome. u r absolutely right now a days the tracks r just fit in as it was a hit in some other show not bothering to think whether the situation suits the story or not like fitting in a round peg in a square hole😆😛 so many a times the story is lost and all loose threads and the narrator or the story dept itself looses tracks.
