Dev stepped out from the taxi and paid his bill. Grabbing his luggage he looked at his house. He expected the brightness inside out in his house, to welcome him, but to his surprise, only the garden lights were on outside and the whole first floor of the house was in dark, and he could only see the light in front hall through the window glasses. Dev thought 'what happened? Um, all are waiting at the main hall, trying to give me surprise, mom bhi na' he smiled cutely and picking his small suitcase and adjusting the shoulder strap of his back pack, he walked towards the main door. ' should I ring the bell? Maybe they are seeing me coming in, they might have noted the taxi coming' his eyes looked up at the balcony and the windows of first floor, to see two eyes , looking at him eagerly. 'might have turned the light off, so that I won't see her, looking at me, but for how long dear, I am here, and soon going to enter inside" a shy smile appeared on his face imagining her eyes on him and he stopped near the main door. 'will they open, or I need or knock?' he got confused, but then decided to ring the bell. He pressed it once, after few seconds he pressed the bell again. The door opened in front of him. He saw his mom's longing eyes.

Holding onto her shoulder , he walked in, and then sliding the backpack down onto the floor, he just wrapped his arms around her and resting his chin over her shoulder he said: " missed you so much mom". Time was ticking by. Suchi's arms just wrapped around him loosely and her eyes were fixed onto the open door, to the darkness outside, to see the smiley face of her DIL, the emptiness made her heart to beat faster.

Dev's eyes scanned both sides and up, to see everyone, but it all looked empty.Loosening his grip , he moved back and looked at his mom's face: mom, where is dad?'

Suchi mumbled in trance : tour

Dev: mei bhi na. never thought of that. And lechu?

Suhci's lips mumbled again: tour

Dev: oh ya, college tour, She was so excited for that , right? Radhika told me that. No wonder the house is in dark now. He tried to bring a laugh with that statement. And thought ' Radhika, um, so you are hiding from me still, um, I am coming. See, how mom is greeting me very coldly, I am sure, you might have told something about me na, I know she likes you more than me, now I am coming up to catch you, ready for that?'

His eyes started scanning up and down and then: mom, let me keep this up and I will be right back, ok.

Dev turned the light on saying : you never change Radhika, so still sitting in this darkness to give me surprise.

Saying that he came out from his room. But then with a thought he went and checked in Lechu's room, and then running down the stairs he crossed the main hall, vaguely passing that open main door and his mom's figure , to their kitchen area. He went in there and keeping his hands on his flanks he looked around, and found each corner empty. "where is she?" he thought to self

"whom you are looking for Dev" his mom's voice caught his attention.

Suchi stood there froze for a moment listening to his question, but then coming back to normalcy , she said in stern voice: i suppose to ask you that question because we send her with you only, then

Dev coming near his mom, holding her shoulder and smiling : mom, now don't play with my patience anymore , just tell me where is she/ I know I told you to keep it as a secret? But not anymore mom, I am here now, where is she?

Suchi in trance: Didn't we send her with you Dev? Don't play with my patience , beta. Her voice was getting stronger and louder.

Dev surprisingly: Mom, don't joke now. Is she went to chandenpur?

Suchi loudly: DEV

The childish smile disappeared from his face, listening to his mom's shouting.

Dev lowering his voice: mom, what happened? Where is Radhika?

Suchi held his wrist and forced him to walk with her to the main door, Dev just followed her without knowing what is happening.

She made him to stand at the front door with her: now call her in, tell her I accept my defeat.

Dev looked at his mom surprisingly, he noted her flushed face, noted her swollen eyelids, saw her longing eyes, he called softly in unnbeivable tone : mom

Suchi again in hard voice but broken words: Dev, call her in , please.

Dev looked out to the dim light filled area, why she wants me to call Radhika from outside, is she outside, but then why mom has to tell that she is accepting the defeat, it suppose to be me, then , he looked at his mom's face again. He held her shoulder and looked at her face again, which was looking at that darkness. But still to clear his doubt he asked: mom, Is Radhika outside?

Suchi turned her face and looked at him in question: why you are asking me that, so she didn't come with you then?

Dev holding his mom's shoulder forced her to come in, and he closed the door behind, and he felt the shivering of his mom's body in his hold, he felt he himself is getting weaker

Suchi looked at him helpleesly, and her eyes gave him the answer, his hands went weaker, and it slowly started sliding down his mom's arms. Suchi held him tight by his shoulder and asked: that is what I am asking you? Where is she? We send her with you? And now you are asking me this?

Dev: but she came three months back to here, I only dropped her at the airport and she board on plane on time and ....his voice trailed off and he kneeled down on that floor, keeping his weaker arms on his knees and with bowed head.

Suchi noted his posture. She sat next to him: you send her three months back!!!!! And whom did you tell that? Do you think you are talking with a child or telling some fairy stories? Dev, I am asking you, tell me that you are saying all this just to make me more anxious, tell me beta. She said with a hope

Dev: no mom, I am serious, I only. But then the words got stuck in his throat, that he tried to hide his face in his knee space, he felt the darkness filling his eyes, and he wrapped his around his knee to escape from the reality.

Seeing his reaction, Suchi sat next to him and holding his upper back she said: dev, you cannot hide your face anymore from me, you did that for last several months, and you were successful in that, but now I am saw your face in front of me, now you cannot hide anything from me, tell me now, why you send her alone, without telling to of us? How can you act so childish and careless like a baby. I was proud of my son all the time, I trusted you over anyone else , I never ever thought you can go this low in your action , this careless by not only sending her alone, but not even making any calls to tell us, or check whether she reached here safely and now you are trying to hide your face. The blood rushed into her eyes and she shouted again for him to hear her voice: DEV, TELL ME.

Dev slowly lifted up his face, but he was unable to make that eye contact with his mom, he accepted his failure, his stare was focusing on the floor and he mumbled by trying hard to find words: she said, she told you about her arrival, ......and then she send me a mail after reaching here, saying that she is back safely and not to try to reach'.. his voice again trialed off, as the teas just rolled down his cheek

Suchi: what are you saying Dev, Radhika never told us about her coming? not to me for sure? I don't know about rohini, then she should have told me, and then with a thinking, no Radhika is not in chandenpur, and it is impossible for Mohan bhayya or anyone form there hide things from us, we used to talk each other and so far everything was going on fine, until you called me and told me about your surprise to Radhika. But then why she said like that. And then looking back at her son's posture/ are you sure, she said like that and she send you mail regarding her arrival here and what her to write like that not to reach her. Dev, you are confusing me, so there is somehting happened between you two , right? Dev, did she really send you that email?

Dev staring on that floor, was only able to say: yes

Suchi lowered her voice and try to bring him up to give her more answers, as if she is asking a little one to give the explanation for a wrong doing, very patiently : beta, tell me, what happened? Did you do something wrong? Did you send her to chandenpur? Did Radhika tell that she called chandenpur about her arrival? But then why they didn't tell us beta?

Dev: no mom, nothing was wrong, I didn't do anything wrong mom, how can I?

Suchi: then what happened? Where is she? Is she in chandenpur? Suchi looked at his posture

Suchi lifting his chin: Dev, don't sit like this, my body is getting weaker, and if you sit like this, it will kill me, so please, please, get up and and and, I don't know what to do now, I don't know, I am confused, I am confused and I I i i i iiiiiii.. her words triled off, and her hand slide off rom his chin, and her body tilt to the floor and her head hit on that floor.

Suchi slowly opened her eyes and he made her to drink some water, she gulped few, from the time she received that call to now, she just had that morning tea, that aso she left in half cup, as it was hard for her to gulp it down, she didn't feel hungry either, her body and mind was not in line to think about it, and now after listening to his mumblings, she lost all her balance.

Suchi looked at her son's face, and she held his hand and said in soft voice: tell me Dev? Why you send her like that?

Dev thinking back , few flashes came in his eyes but then he heard his mom's voice again: tell me Dev, please

Dev: vo mom, she wanted to come here, she was missing everyone, and

Suchi: but why did you send her alone?

Dev: because because , because I was too busy mom, with my project work and ....she said she can come alone...

Suchi lifting her head up , trying to sit straight, Dev held her shoulder: so you think she is in Chandenpur?

Dev: she send me mail, saying she reached here safe, but mom, I send her to Delhi airport only, and you don't have any info about it and then who went to pick her up?

Suchi: do you think anyone form chandenpur?

Dev: but then why they didn't tell you?

Dev: what do I do now Mom? I want to see my Radhika. I can't live without her. He said in trance

Suchi looked at his face, and then taking a deep breath in : hu, you are asking me this now. It was always your dream, your work, and now you are asking me, what to do? For a minute think of Mohan bhayya's face, rohini's face, daadi's face, hearing the same, facing the same like me , that you send her to here, and now you don't know where their daughter is? she continued in that trance: it is not only you Dev, but your dad, me, and to some extend your sister also is answerable to them., It is not finding an answer for not having Radhika with you, but to find her is the solution, so, go find her.

His brain was not functioning anymore, his body was feeling weaker over weaker, his heart was failing to give that push to spread that red color thick liquid to all over his body, his lungs were giving up onto him to expand wide enough to take that breath in.

Suhi continued in a trance: It all started as a fairy tale for you and that time it was just a kid's foolish belief and now, when reality strike at its full strength, and standing in front of me with that question mark, I am feeling desperate, desperate to find an answer, or desperate to find a way to get out from this mess, safely , so I think.... to face the reality is hard, but we need to. So go and change quick, I will call the taxi by then.

Dev: but mom

Suchi: let's go to chandenpur

Dev got up on his feet, and helped his mom as she tried to stand on her feet. She went near the phone. Dev took his steps towards his room, getting inside, he closed the door behind, the soft cry just exhaled out from this throat as the lump moved and gave way to the real voice, he sat down , leaning back to the door, he cried silently , the tears just rolled down, his mind went blank, he just wanted sometime alone to believe that she is not here, not in delhi, how can she hide in Chandenpur like that? What did I do wrong Radhika? did I do anything wrong? I don't know? For everything you were able to find that blame on me, but it was all just nok-jhok's and when did it got that serious? why did you send me that mail saying you reached here safely. He cursed himself for not making that calls, he cursed his busy life, he cursed the past.

Suchi: The taxi will be here at any minute

Dev coming near with a hopeful face: mom, I know you well, you are punishing me right , for sending her alone and not calling home for months.

Dev: mom, I know you well. So if you didn't hear about me or Radhika for two days, you used to make calls to us, but you didn't try to call me at all, so that means, you know where Rahdika is ? then why this drama?

Suchi looked at him and lifting her right hand up and moving it forcefully against the air she just hit on her lovely son's cheek within fraction of second, Dev stood with a shock face

Suchi's wet lashes widened and she held his shirt at neck level and squeezing that in her palm with tightening it more , she looked at his shocked face and said: you think these all is a drama, do you? Dev, come back to reality, we need to find where Radhika is? Did you get that. The drama is over Dev, the drama is over, now come back. You were Ram , but that doesn't mean that you need to send Sita for vanvas, you are Dev, just Dev, and your wife Radhika needs to be with you, not in any unsafe place, We didn't send you for vanvas, it was your choice, so then it is your responsibility to safeguard your wife? so the drama is over, come out from it and act like Dev. May be I should have given this slap eariler to bring you to relaity, but , i still had that hope thinking you are playing with me, but Dev, this is reality and act now. her words trialed off looking at his posture...

She saw the lights coming in their direction, releasing her hand she walked out, and waited for her son to come out with her, so that she can lock the door.
