Another train song I adore, this one has Talat and Suraiyya on screen singing for themselves. From the film Waris (1954), Anil Biswas' music - especially the prelude beautifully simulates the distinctive hum of a train's motion - so much so that you can readily believe this song is on a train without ever having to watch it.
Suraiyya sings only the mukhda once (in this version) but it's oh so sweet! , and I think Talat's voice is perfectly suited to this song - its so gentle and at the same time so steeped in romance- almost reverential in the way it wraps around the beauty of the music and lyrics like a careful giftwrap around a rare & precious gift. You can feel the worship in the way his voice caresses over the lyrics and flows over the music. AHHHH!
The lyrics by Qamar Jalalabadi are perfectly constructed for the mood of the song - conflating the beauty of nature and two romantic hearts falling in love.
Kali kali choomke pavan kahe khil ja (the way he sings that last 'jaaaa".. my heart! )
Khili kali bhanwre se kahe aake mil ja, aa piya mil jaa
Dil ne suni kahin dil ki pukaar
Raahi matwale .....
tu chhed ek baar mann ka sitar
Jaane kab chori chori aayi hai bahar
