Indeed, indeed,indeed!!

One thing that irked me when I started reading the book is that Rosie is quintessentially dark skinned and sooo Indian!! And the movie just brought in a fair skinned actress, I had a difficult time getting WR out of my head while trying to imagine the protagonist Narayan wrote!

The movie just whitewashed characters, physically and morally😆

The songs are lovely! ❤️

Ahh that is the age-old Hindi film industry propensity for dusting all that is South Indian under the carpet and turning them into North Indian narratives simply because that would be more appealing to a pan-Indian audience! 🤪 Unless they want to reduce them to stereotypical caricatures!

Narayan wrote Guide with South Indian characters based off of his hometown Malgudi but of course the movie made them all North Indian!

Things haven’t changed over the years! They did the same thing with PadMan and Twinkle Khanna even with all her ‘wokeness’ confessed that they moved the setting (and the characters) to North India just to make it more saleable! , And what’s weird is that Waheeda is actually a South Indian! All this ‘whitewashing’! Seriously! 😆

Recently watched Meenakshi Sundareshwar, a South Indian setting, all the story based there, with caricaturish and token representation! It's aesthetically pleasing and one time watch but yeah... They never do justice with South Indian stuff. 💔

The preponderance of such “cross-pollination" is an obvious reflection of the fact that Hindi is no longer the face of Indian entertainment. Cinema and television soaps once pejoratively described as regional entertainers are not only breaking geographic barriers to go ---national but also garnering enough respect as entertainment markets with concrete potential.

In every international film festival, Malayalam pictures made their presence felt.

But I fully agree with both of your views. Since Padoson days, the mocking of the South Indian accent is clearly visible. I never like that picture for that reason. 😡And Sunil Dutt's personality didn't fit that comic role.

But at the same time, the Bengali Film industry and the actors/ actresses command a sort of supremacy and respect from the Hindi film industry, because of the presence of the stalwarts from that region.

There is a slice of the regional pie in every successful Hindi movie. Bahubali is the best example of this. For commercial success, and for class and mass movies, Hindi producers are looking at the South. A remarkable change.

It’s true what you say about language no longer being a barrier. But in Hindi films there’s still a very dismal representation of regional culture, and when it does appear it’s over-the-top and stereotypical.

Even globally, the success of K-dramas and BTS show that art transcends language. Somehow the thing with Hindi films has always been to glorify and over-represent one culture (usually North Indian) at the cost of others.


Padosan makes my blood boil even now but those were different times. Nowadays people are more aware and sensitive to cultural misappropriation and filmmakers need to be on guard about it too.


Bengal and Bengali artists have always enjoyed a wider appreciation probably because they’re associated with more intellectual art than commercial. Hopefully things change soon.

Yes, art transcends language. That is why, I always say, there is no need for subtitles for Pather Panchali [ Bengali], Pinjra [ Marathi] and Shankarabharanam [ Telugu]. Those render the inherent human feelings, emotions and weaknesses, above and beyond any language.

Chennai Express is a good movie. Every region carries rich culture with a few unique traditions over the centuries. That is the strength of Indianness---Unity in diversity.
