‘Arnab’s arrest the beginning of the end of Maharashtra govt.’

Union Minister for Coal, Mines and Parliamentary Affairs Pralhad Joshi said here on Wednesday that the arrest of Republic TV Editor Arnab Goswami in Mumbai is the “beginning of the end” of the Maharashtra coalition government.

Speaking to media persons at the international airport here, he said that the Maharashtra government should release him immediately.

He condemned the arrest of the editor.

There may be ideological differences. But the way the government arrested and treated the editor later is shocking, he said.

MUMBAI, India — One of India’s most famous television journalists was arrested Wednesday on charges of abetting a suicide, a move criticized by politicians and members of the news media as an attempt to muzzle the press.

The journalist, Arnab Goswami, a conservative news anchor, was arrested by the Mumbai police after a high-voltage drama at his residence in the city, India’s financial capital.

“This is not the way to treat the press,” Prakash Javadekar, India’s information and broadcasting minister, said in a tweet.

Mr. Goswami has made a name for himself shouting down opponents, embracing right-wing causes and aggressively backing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his right-leaning administration.
