Makkhi, Gorilla, Snake, Nevla, Peacock, Honey Bee - Colors or Animal Planet?

By Shreejata Niyogi
20 Jun 2016 07:14 PM

Go bananas!!!

It's raining creepy crawlies on Indian television.

Take a break all casting co ordinators, for the days of smart heroes and sanskari heroines are gone.

Saas-bahu sagas defined Indian television in the past, and now plots are literary bestial'.

And the channel which is spearheading the entire beast content revolution' is Colors.

It's ironical that with its upcoming show 24 season 2, the channel intends to redefine content on Indian television, on the other, its raking numbers with the help of elements like makkhi (fly), snakes and most recently a gorilla. Isn't that what you call a nullifying effect?

Scratch ...scratch...scratch head (like a gorilla)!!!

To be more precise, readers must have witnessed the recent changes in the channel's programming. Once known for making more realistic, path-breaking social dramas like Balika Vadhu, Na Aana Iss Des Laado, Phulwa among others, Colors has now taken a different path altogether. It seems that the channel is on a spree of making break from its image of a bold, progressive, intelligent broadcaster.

Making supernatural characters a cool trend, Colors came up with the show called Naagin, a story about two shape shifting snakes. There have been many shows earlier on Naagins, but none could reach the popularity of this one. Once shown on Colors, the shape shifting creatures went on to become a super hit among other show makers, with many producers introducing Naagin characters in their series. What is even more interesting is the fact that the daily showed many other such characters including a shape shifting nevla (mongoose), peacock and honey bee. Though we have seen Naagins earlier on small screen... mongoose, peacock and honey bee being integral part of a plot is truly mind boggling.

For the fans of small screen, if Naagins and Nevlas were not enough, the channel even turned its leading lady into a makhhi in Sasural Simar Ka. With that, the TRP of the show actually flew' high!!!

Finally, after all the insects, reptiles and birdies, even apes came into the picture. The channel presented us with a gorilla in Thapki Pyaar Ki, who fell in love with the leading lady of the show (Faceplam). No doubt that the audience of small screen have always appreciated love triangles on screen, but we never thought that the love triangle can also include an animal.

***No consummation scenes please***

We have serious doubts if Colors indeed is competing with other GECs in the space, or Animal Planet.

Well, we are no one to judge. But when a gorilla becomes a hero of a story, it does bring in a chuckle a two for anyone who loves good content, which is not regressive and banal.

Anyways, our good wishes are with the gorilla. May he climb up the ratings ladder in a jiffy and go on to win an award or two as a best performer. Soon it will develop tantrums and stop shoot demanding hike in per day. Soon media will write all kinds of stories about the gorilla. Gorilla lifestyle, gorilla gym habits, gorilla diet chart, gorilla affair, gorilla being cast in a new show, gorilla becoming brand ambassador of a product and what not.

Phew...

Isse accha to 400 saal ki baa thi...

Whoop whoop..banana shake anyone???
