Coming back to the movie that has impressed me last weekend ... Kapoor and Sons. BW seems to be coming of age, the three movies i have seen this year have all been great, in very different ways. Airlift, Neerja and now K&S. The first two were based on real life incidents ... K&S is based on real life ... it's a slice of life ... could be anyone's life ... yours, mine, anyone's. True, most of us don't have a gay son hiding his sexuality, or a father hiding an extra-marital affair (at least one hopes not 😆) ... but the way the characters are written, the way they are layered, and the layers peeled off slowly, one can see shades of oneself and one's own family in each and every character. The fights, the squabbles, the hidden complexes between siblings, the financial strains in a middle class family ... the wisdom of the elder generation who can cut through the superficialities and see what is really important ... the script is really the king here.
And that's the beauty of this movie ... everyone is real. They fight, they bicker, they all hide secrets, yet when it matters, they manage to pull together. When Rahul reveals his truth to his mother, she is heartbroken, because her perfect son isn't so perfect after all, she is deeply hurt, and never wants to see him again. Yet, when he goes, she misses him terribly, and when he returns, they fumble towards each other again, to their old bond ... him being the elder beloved son, the mature sensible one, the one she can lean on ... the fact that he's gay doesn't change any of that. No grand apologies, no tearful reunions ... she struggles to accept his truth, but she cannot do anything but accept HIM ... he is her son and always will be.
Ratna Pathak Shah and Fawad were absolutely bloody brilliant ... they felt like a real mother son pair, and their scenes together were some of the best scenes of the movie. I thought Fawad was overrated ... I eat my words. He is brilliant. And he is damn good looking to top it ... 😛 I am definitely watching his next movie, especially if rumor is true and it's with DP.
All the rest were good too ... Siddharth - probably his best acting that I have seen, he was weak in the confrontation with his mom, but for the rest he held his own with the rest. Rishi Kapoor was great, he brought a smile to my face every time he came on scene, and his bonding with his grandsons was adorable. Alia was cute, she was good where she talks about her parents' death ... made me vow never to end any conversation with my own parents with a fight 😭 Rajat Kapoor was good as usual. The plumber scene was hilarious. The chacha and his family were reassuringly normal ... am sure, given time, their story could be equally dysfunctional ... 😆
This is one movie I would love to watch again.
