S. Chandrasekhar, along with William A. Fowler won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1983 for their mathematical theory of black holes. The Chandrasekhar limit is named after him. In his speech, he quoted Tagore's Gitanjali and said, "May I, on behalf of my wife and myself, express our immense gratitude to the Nobel Foundation for this noble reception in this noble city?"

Again a first and only, Amartya Sen won The Prize in Economics in 1998. In his speech, which he began with a "silly thought", he said, "economists too can learn from the kind of open minded reasoning employed by Tagore and Chandrasekhar".

Venkatraman Ramakrishnan won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2009, along with Thomas A. Steitz and Ada E. Yonath, "for studies of the structure and function of the ribosome". In his speech, he thanked "the dedicated work and intellectual contributions of generations of talented postdocs, students and research assistants".

And now, a PDS jute bag scam

Jute bags meant for packaging of foodgrains under the Public Distribution System (PDS) allegedly provided their manufacturers " in league with some officials of procuring State government agencies, quality insurance inspectors and middlemen " an opportunity to siphon off thousands of crores in government revenue.

So serious is the scam that the Prime Minister's Office has taken note of it and the Central Bureau of Investigation has been directed by the Union Textiles Ministry to inquire into the allegations. An investigation has been launched.

Government sources told The Hindu that at PDS packaging centres, new unbranded bags were being replaced with used ones. The new ones were diverted to middlemen who sold them off to clients and mills in other States at half the government price.

This was recently noticed by Textiles Ministry officials in Haryana and Punjab, from where jute bag consignments were being allegedly diverted to Odisha, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. The stolen bags did not carry the name and licence number of the manufacturers.

The first time he set foot in the city he was the super star of world football. Thirty-eight years later another legion of his fans received him back as the greatest player of all time.

"Pele, Pele, Pele" the chants rented the air as the Brazilian legend, who has three football World Cup titles, honoured the rendezvous with the passionate fans arriving at around 9 a.m. in the morning on Sunday.

Receiving him at the airport was a big crowd and one of the key ministers of State Government, Firhad (Boby) Hakim, who led the Brazilian legend on a passenger cart from the terminal.

Pele walked past the waiting crowd and waved as loud cheers greeted him.
