The Queen has rewarded Prince Harry for his impressive performances representing her on the world stage by giving him a knighthood.
Her Majesty appointed her grandson as a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (KCVO) during a private ceremony at Buckingham Palace, where no cameras were present.
The honour is in the personal gift of the Sovereign, who does not announce the reasons for it being conferred, but the Prince recently returned from a hugely successful tour of New Zealand, following previous tours on Her Majesty's behalf to the Caribbean and the Middle East.
A royal source said Prince Harry, 30, was "proud and pleased" to receive the honour, adding: "It is very significant for him personally."
The knighthood comes as the Prince prepares to finish his career in the Army to concentrate on public service, which will include an increased workload of royal duties after the Queen entered her 90th year.
The KCVO was founded in 1896 by Queen Victoria, and its members meet every four years at a service in St George's Chapel in Windsor Castle.
Kensington Palace tweeted a photograph of Prince Harry's insignia, which he will now be able to wear alongside his Army medals on formal occasions.
Other members of the Order include the Duchess of Cornwall, the Earl and Countess of Wessex, the Duke and Duchess of Kent and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester.
