MASTER STORY WEAVER'
By Rapti Bhaumick, Ahmedabad Mirror | Nov 26, 2014, 02.00 AM IST

Master Story Weaver'
Soft-spoken, thinking well before speaking, that is award winning writer Purnendu Shekhar, the braing behind Astitva...Ek Prem Kahani, Balika Vadhu and Saat Phere... Saloni Ka Safar " appreciated for their educated and mature female protagonists. In town to promote his upcoming venture, we spoke to Purnendu to understand the mind of this writer.

WOMEN ARE STRONGER

When you work for a television medium, you need to realise that it is essentially a woman-centric medium with the maximum viewership comprising women " the remote is in their hands. And I personally feel that women are stronger than men. The kind of things a woman undergoes in her lifetime and the strength she displays, men just don't have that. That is the reason all my protagonists are strong women.

UNEDUCATION = UNAWARE

I belong to Rajasthan where I have seen child marriages. My mother got married at 15, not given a chance to study. Had she been educated, I am sure she would be at a top position today. The reason behind the sufferings of women is lack of education because of which they are unaware of their rights and are dependent. Gandhiji said, "... if you educate a woman you educate an entire family."

OBSERVATION IS KEY

A writer need not look or even read for inspiration. I belong to a theatre background and we are taught observation. That, coupled with an understanding of human psychology will help you find characters around you. Take the protagonist of Satrangi Sasural. She is a girl you will find in every neighbourhood " one who works and runs the house.

WEAVING SAGAS

Writing for television is very difficult because there is not just one story. In fact, there is no story in the world that can be narrated for over six years on a daily basis. A television writer has to be well equipped to bind together old and new stories " I often say we are weavers.

Daljeet Kaur ends 5-year marriage with Shaleen Bhanot

TV actress Daljeet Kaur has called it quits with husband Shaleen Bhanot after five years of marriage. The couple was the winner of the fourth season of dance reality show, Nach Baliye. Apparently, Daljeet took Shaleen to the cops on November 30 after he allegedly assaulted her.

She has moved out of their house along with their one-year-old son.

Said a friend of the couple, "Shaleen is a very short-tempered guy and there have been incidences of physical abuse. In the past too, after a few months of their son's delivery, Daljeet, along with the toddler, had moved out of his home and stayed with her parents in Bengaluru. However, the two reconciled and she returned to Mumbai. But things reached a head this time around and she registered a police complaint against him."

When asked about legal separation, the friend added, "She is in a state of shock and hasn't decided on it, but legal proceedings will follow soon." While Shaleen didn't revert to our text message, Daljeet refused to comment on the news.

Satyajit Sharma will do a comedy show now

After Balika Vadhu, Satyajit Sharma, an actor who has been known for his roles in films like Paa and Chameli, will do a comedy show.

For someone who has only done negative and supporting roles, this will be different as he is portraying a comical role in the show Bal Gopal Kare Dhamaal.

He will play the role of Sharmaji who will be bestowed upon with the Almighty's presence. The story revolves around the unique equation between a common man and God in modern settings. Sharmaji and Bal Gopal's chemistry is recreated on the lines of the Arjun-Krishna duo from the Mahabharat where Bal Gopal helps him solve issues of everyday life.

Thanks Aditi.I'm sure Satyajith will rock.In fact he has got a flair for comedy. That was not explored fully in BV unfortunately.
There were so many scenes where he only had to give some expression and no lines and stay in the background.Even in those scnes he could make his presence felt.
Very happy for him.
Wonder which channel this show is airing 😕
@Daljeet and Shaleen *unhappy sigh!*Seen that edition of Nach Baliye where they were winners

Hindi GECs experiment with content on TV

Navya Malini, TNN | Nov 27, 2014, 01.33PM IST

Not so long ago did the eponymous show 24 turn heads with a commendable star cast like Anil Kapoor, Tisca Chopra, Mandira Bedi et al, after that came Big B-starrer Yudh, which gave a different perspective to TV content.

Amid fighting for the TVTs and prime time dominance with reality shows, fiction shows are definitely thinking of different strategies for visibility and competition on the small screen. While fiction and non-fiction shows are strategically positioned by the Hindi GECs so as to maximize the reach and viewer connect, there is also seen a different prime time strategy that Hindi GECS are adopting - focusing on thinking different genres.

It is here that thrillers have come into play. While the recent buzz on the upcoming showMahakumbh has made viewers anticipate a lot on what's on the card in terms of star power and content in a show, other shows like the recently launched Pukaar...Call For Hero, is also getting its due attention not only because of the star cast, but also because of the genre it belongs to.

It is interesting to note that while 24 has been the trendsetter in breaking the mould of run-of-the-mill storylines and the saas-bahu genre of shows that fill the various prime time bands across the GEC space, Amitabh Bachchan starrer Yudh just took the momentum forward by embracing a different genre on the small screen.

What is even noteworthy about the shows is that their efforts on social networking platform to reach the younger target audience. Obviously, because this is where the future of viewership lies. And one also can't deny the fact that the awareness among the women audience about content, genres and worldly affairs is also increasing by each passing month.

Agrees actress Shubhangi Latkar, who says, "Today's audience and women in particular are a lot more aware of a lot of issues, thanks to technology and reach of news. So, content on TV is channeling according to the awareness."

At the same time, existence of all kinds of genres on the small screen, according to many in the industry, will give rise to diversity. In fact, diversity in content is what is currently ruling the roost - be it shows like Laut Aao Trisha, Diya Aur Bati Hum, Balika Vadhu or Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashma, Itna Karo Na Mujhe Pyaar.

CHIEF MENTOR

Nov 15, 2014, 12.34 AM IST
http://www.ahmedabadmirror.com/ahmedabad/cover-story/Chief-Mentor/articleshow/45153572.cms
Chief Mentor

Amidst her ministry expansion plans, Gunostav meetings and routine administrative tasks, Chief Minister Anandiben Patel initially decided to spare 30 minutes for an exclusive interaction with a bright bunch of children at her residential office premises as part of Ahmedabad Mirror's Children's Day celebrations. But once the questions started pouring, the CM got so engrossed that she spent more than an hour-and-a-half with the children drawn from a cross section of society. She also treated the kids to chocolates and homemade mohanthal. Here are excerpts from the 100-minute interview conducted by 12 children drawn from Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation-run Usmanpura Shala number 2, Adani Vidya Mandir, Gandhi Vidyalaya, Kendriya Vidyalaya, Mt Carmel, and FD High School and Udgam.

Vanshika: You were a teacher and are CM now. What do you enjoy more?
CM: Well, both jobs have their own positives. As a teacher, I derived intense satisfaction in teaching girls of classes 8-12 a range of subjects from math, science, practicals and other subjects. I was always happy with the impact a teacher could have on her students. As CM, I take decisions that impact people's lives.

Renita: My family told me that the one thing you need to learn from the CM is discipline...
CM: Whatever I am today is because of discipline. No country or individual can progress in life without discipline. I have to credit my father for instilling discipline in me. I woke up early, worked in the farm, then went to school, came back, studied and helped with household chores. I always slept early. All of you should also be disciplined. You should do your own tasks. Small habits like clearing your own plate after meal, keeping your stuff organized at home and in school will go a long way in helping you in life.

Vikas: I study in class 9. But every day after school, I work at a tea stall six hours daily to support my family. How should I go about achieving my goals?
CM: Beta, first of all, you must study hard and work hard. I am proud of you. I also worked and studied. I had to work on my farm every day and study as well. If you find any particular subject tough, request your teachers to help you after school. Always ensure your problems are solved. You have to be focused. Promise yourself that you will complete your school education.

Mantasha: We live in the 21st century. Yet, society discriminates between boys and girls.
CM: Mindsets do not change overnight. Whether it is a janaaza, burying the dead, or cremating them, many families feel that only a son can perform the rites. We have to change this mindset. Let us all begin from our homes by ensuring treat boys and girls at par.

Riya: What is your daily routine?
CM: I get up at 5.30 am daily (and nobody wakes me up!) and walk for 50 minutes and then do yoga and other exercises for half an hour to forty minutes. On Mondays and Tuesdays, I meet people to resolve their problems and on Wednesdays I hold a Cabinet meeting. Between Thursdays and Saturdays, I visit different districts. I work 15-16 hours a day.

Asma: What message do you wish to give the children of the state?
CM: Education is very important, you must always be healthy, exercise regularly and inculcate good habits and be disciplined. Read about the lives of Gandhiji and Maulana Azad. I also want all of you to read a book called 'Kaala Paani ni Saja'. It will teach you about life, success and discipline.

Urvashi: Children play video games these days. But my mother says, go out and play. What games did you play as a child?
CM: Education and sports are equally important. We played kho kho, kabaddi, gili danda, climb trees, ambli-pipli, saat tali, trying to remove a broken piece of bangle from between many pieces without disturbing any other piece. Games are not just fun but teach us discipline, concentration, team spirit. I was a kho kho champion and also got a Veer Bala award as first prize at a district level championship for three years.

Avni: Do you watch tv, Which is your favourite serial?
CM: I did not have TV when I was your age. These days, I only watch news. I watched Balika Vadhu regularly for the social issues it addressed but of late I have stopped watching it. I also watched Rana Pratap and Shivaji.

Avni: Which is the last film you watched and the book you read?
CM: Hmm, I haven't seen a film in the past five years. I also haven't read a full book for past 2 years. But all of you, do not forget to read Kala Pani ni Saja. I also watch plays. Sometime back I went and watched Baa e boundary maari. I'm told the film Super Nani is based on that film.

Diya: What do you eat daily?
CM: I have bhakri and milk in the morning; dal, rice vegetables and rotli in the afternoon; khichdi-vegetables and bhakri in the evening. I avoidjunk. My bhakri is my pizza!

Diya: Don't you feel like having pani puris in the street?
CM: What a coincidence. I just had pani puri last night at my son's place. I don't fancy outside food.

Vikas: When was the last time you had tea at a kitli.
CM: Well, I have never had tea! My mom never had it, nor my children or grandchildren.
