Sistani calls on Iraqis to unite against Islamic State danger
Fri, Aug 08 09:47 AM EDT

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq's top cleric called again on compatriots on Friday to unite against the "big danger" posed by Islamic State militants, whose advances prompted U.S. President Barack Obama to authorize limited bombing.

In a weekly Friday sermon delivered through a spokesman in the sacred Shi'ite city of Kerbala, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani blamed Iraqi politicians for Iraq's biggest crisis since the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003, saying they are motivated by self-interest.

"All Iraqis should unify ranks and intensify efforts in the face of this big danger that threatens their present and future," said Sistani.

The Islamic State, an al-Qaeda spin-off, swept through northern Iraq in June, almost unopposed by Iraq's U.S.-funded and trained army, and has made gains since then.

Friday's sermon marks the second time that Sistani has called on Iraqis to stand up to the Islamic State, which has threatened to march on Baghdad and wants to reshape the map of the Middle East to impose its radical ideology.

Sistani said that politicians who cling to their posts are making a "grave mistake", piling pressure on Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki to drop his bid for a third term.

Sistani urged politicians to stop bickering and choose a prime minister who can unite Iraqis and end the crisis posed by Sunni insurgents.

"All political parties should know that conflicts and differences among each other - which in many times have no justification but self interest or sectarian or national interests - have caused the weakening of everybody and opened the door for the terrorists," he said.

Over the past week, the Sunni militants have made another dramatic push through the north, seizing a fifth oilfield and several more towns and reaching Iraq's biggest dam after routing Kurdish forces.

Reuters photographs published on Thursday showed what appeared to be Islamic State fighters controlling a checkpoint near the border with the Kurdish semi-autonomous region.

Dubai: Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called the Iraq conflict a "showdown between humanity and barbarian savagery" and criticised Western media for portraying it as a war between Shi'ite and Sunni Muslims.

Outside powers have often exploited ethnic and religious divisions in Muslim states and "they dream of a war between Shi'ites and Sunnis" that would not happen, he said in Tehran, according to an official statement.

He warned against what he called Western propaganda about "a cast of morons and Saddam Hussein leftovers," apparent references to the radical Sunni Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) group and Sunni tribes who once sided with the country's deposed dictator and now fight with ISIS.

"The incident in Iraq is not a war between Shi'ites and Sunnis," Khamenei said at a meeting with families of victims of a 1981 bombing that destroyed the Tehran headquarters of the ruling Islamic Republic Party in 1981.

"It is a battle between supporters and opponents of terrorism, it's a war between fans of America and the West and those favouring independence for their nation," he said of the Iraq violence. "It's a showdown between humanity and barbarian savagery."

Last week, Khamenei said he opposed intervention in Iraq by the United States or any other country to stop ISIS. President Barack Obama has said he would not send ground forces back to Iraq, limiting assistance to military advisers, intelligence and surveillance operations.

____________

Exactly! Ayatollah Sistani in Iraq asked the locals to wield arms to save Iraq ("Given the current threat facing Iraq, defending the land, honor and holy places is a religious duty," said a statement from Ayatollah Sistani") And the world media is interpreting it as Ayatollah Sistani telling Shias to fight against ISIS Sunnis! Kuch bhi! ISIS isnt Islamic, let alone being a sect of Muslims!

Fine, US shouldnt help. But I want to know what is Iran planning to do about it???
