Game of Thrones fans have been praying to gods of the old and new in recent months for news about the next book in George R. R. Martin's Ice and Fire series to finally get a release date. Their hopes were dashed further when Martin announced that the book wouldn't be out in 2016. Then things got even darker when Martin cancelled two convention appearances because he needed more time to work on the book.
Finally though, we have some good news on the status of The Winds of Winter, thanks to an recent interviewEntertainment Weekly did with Martin. Martin, riding high over the chapter release earlier in the week, has set a new goal of having The Winds of Winter on the shelves before the start of Season 6.
Here's what he told EW.com.
"I wish it was out now. Maybe I'm being overly optimistic about how quickly I can finish. But I canceled two convention appearances, I'm turning down a lot more interviews"anything I can do to clear my decks and get this done."
For the first time ever, Martin is in a situation where Game of Thrones is further along in their story than in his novels. His goal is to rectify that discrepancy by the start of Season 6. But Martin wasn't done breaking news. The author revealed that's the extra time to work on the book has given him a great idea for new shocking twist to the story.
"This is going to drive your readers crazy, but I love it. I'm still weighing whether to go that direction or not. It's a great twist. It's easy to do things that are shocking or unexpected, but they have to grow out of characters. They have to grow out of situations. Otherwise, it's just being shocking for being shocking. But this is something that seems very organic and natural, and I could see how it would happen. And with the various three, four characters involved... it all makes sense. But it's nothing I've ever thought of before. And it's nothing they can do in the show, because the show has already"on this particular character"made a couple decisions that will preclude it, where in my case I have not made those decisions."
Sounds like Martin is fully focused on getting fans a new book sometime in 2016. Head over to EW.com for the full interview with the genius author
no idea what he may be alluding to, but its going to be incredible!
No Dany! What a relief!
The High Septon showing us a glimpse into the Queen Mother's future😈
Sophie Turner take a bow! 👏Her expressions when she reaches Winterfell & then when she bows to Roose Bolton. She wants to murder him with her bare hands. But she can't. At least not immediately.
Arya got promoted from sweeping floors to cleaning dead men😆
Maisie Williams is brilliant as Arya remembers Needle & everything it is associated with. Jon Snow basically!😭
Jon chops off Janos Slynt's head. Not as epic as "Ed, fetch me the block" but good. Made even better with Stannis looking on approvingly.👏
Davos points out the most obvious part of the vows of the NW: to serve the realm. Finally someone gets it, that serving the realm could also mean saving it from fools like the one in the South👏
Margery & Cersei both trying to win over Tommen & Margery clearly winning.🤢
Cersei supporting the High Sparrow. If only she could see what this man would do to her.
Roose Bolton not trusting LF at all. What a brilliant man. The only man since Tyrion & Varys to understand LF completely & in a much shorter time than the other two.👏
Brian Cogman, trying to justify the rape & torture of Sansa Stark that is most likely coming in the next few episodes of Game of Thrones. Isn't it great to manipulate your audience by giving the shittiest storylines to the characters that they love the most, even when that wasn't the intention of the original story? Even when this will drastically change her character, and the traumas that she has gone through? Isn't it awesome to blatantly own up to this manipulation, and pretend that this choice is somehow a tribute to Sophie's great acting? What a real gentleman you are. Fan-f**king-tastic. (via saeratargaryen)
This is so irritating not just for the obvious reasons but because he outright admitted that he's valuing Ramsay's storyline over Sansa's.
Like she was interchangeable with some other random character for this wonderful storyline they have for Ramsay.
"It's just a sword," she said, aloud this time... but it wasn't. Needle was Robb and Bran and Rickon, her mother and her father, even Sansa. Needle was Winterfell's grey walls, and the laughter of its people. Needle was the summer snows, Old Nan's stories, the heart tree with its red leaves and scary face, the warm earthy smell of the glass gardens, the sound of the north wind rattling the shutters of her room. Needle was Jon Snow's smile. He used to mess my hair and call me "little sister," she remembered, and suddenly there were tears in her eyes.
(...) The Many-Faced God can have the rest, she thought, but he can't have this.
I cannot wait for the day when Jon & Arya meet again. She is the reason he shouldnt die in the next book😭
