The religion wise there is Buddhist, Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Burgers (Dutch) and Malay in SL and there population strength is also in the order I have given...

However all this time the country was never identified as a Buddist country or Hindu country but rather as a multi-religious, multi-ethnic country... The segregation and related problems are creeping in though...

The Buddhist mother tongue is Sinhalese, that has a lot of Sanskrit words as well...

Hindus mother tongue is Tamil

Muslims mother tongue is mostly Tamil but there is certain regions who speaks Sinhalese

Christian mother tongue is depending on the region Tamil or Sinhalese

Malays mother tongue is Malay but they too speak in Tamil and/or Sinhalese

Burgers mainly use Sinhalese

Mostly everyone speak English though English was mostly 2nd language...

We have closer to 90% literacy rate in the country and in the cities you will find people whoa re fluent in all 3 main languages...
