Iyers are notorious for their fine vegetarian ways In some conservative families onion and garlic are still taboo but times have changed and there are Iyers who also now eat non veg outside of their house One of my cousin does eat non veg but makes sure its outside and never brought home My brother during a phase did eat chicken but then after a spiritual awakening and his now deep interest in meditation gave up and is now strictly veg as well In my case it was purely of choice My parents although belong to the old school of Iyer Thinking gave us the option without imposing theirs considering we were living in different cultures But my mum to date has stuck to her Iyer ways but has no issues with onion and garlic I innovate and experiment when I have the time with various world cuisines I adore Italian the most and not so enthusiastic about SE Asian cooking I like Mediterranean dishes and love Middle eastern cuisine as well but only vegetarian
