Okay him leaving elia was a minor thing (forget ned stark) I don't think he could have kidnapped lyanna because lyanna wasn't a sansa type of girl...more of an arya type she was. Plus rhaegar was well respected throughout the seven kingdoms...even ned stark respected him. He was an ideal man, an ideal son, an ideal ruler. Barriston selmy even praised him and believed that he loved lya. His marriage to elia was purely political. He wasn't in 'love' with her. He was only 'fond' of elia...like a freind, partner maybe but not a lover.
At the time lya was engaged to robert, and there was the mad king aerys of course. Their love wouldn't have been accepted. Aerys even felt that his own son was conspiring against him...so he had come to harrenhal. He might have killed rhaegar for conspiring against him with the starks. He killed bran and papa stark later on you see.
Also its like in the genes of targs for having prophetic dreams. Maybe he had seen lya beforehand. Maybe he was playing the harp because of the dissatisfication he was receiving from his wife elia. You see lyanna was everything elia wasn't.
When the king was doubting his own son, do you think the kingsguard would have saved him?

@lyanna, lyanna wasn't dutiful like ned. She was more like brandon...fierce. Robert was furious after rhae had crowned her at the tourney. So after she disappeared, he went bonkers. He was sure rhae had taken her away from him and more sure that lya loved only him. So he discussed this with the starks. Obviously as rhae wasn't there all the blame was easily put on him. Also three of targ men... jon connington etc disappeared. So where could they go? First guess is KL. So brandon and papa stark rushed to the rescue. Now mad king thought now these starks are conspiring against me with my son to over throw me(lo karlo baat) and killed them.
Idk why she didn't act during the war...maybe because she was preggo or the news didn't reach to her. I mean was at a tower with rhae and three men at her side. They couldn't have told her. But the promise me ned and pool of bed could only mean child birth and protect the baby kinda shit. Also I don't think ned the most honourable could bed a woman in just a year and pop out a child. He was protecting jon from robert I guess.

Rhae and lya were the catalyst to targ dynasty downfall. Dany should have cursed them for ruining her life! lol

What? Mance is rhaegar? O God please no! Rhaegar is dead. Robert killed him. Even dany saw him getting at the house of the undead or dead, what was it? I forgot! lol. Anywayz she saw him at that place so he's dead for sure.

Also regarding rhae-lya theory, the mystery knight could possibly be lya as she had earlier saved howland reed and the mystery knight too defended him at the tourney.
Also aerys had sent rhae after the mystery knight but he came back only with a shield of the knight. The knight was small, not like a huge man more of a woman...so rhaegar was protecting lyanna, who was the mystery knight.
