And about MODs steering clear of the thread, don't worry, dear. I recently commented on the 160th page of some SS. They steer clear a lot. Especially if the thread is popular.

One upon a time a frog
Croaked away in Bingle Bog
Every night from dusk to dawn
He croaked awn and awn and awn

An excerpt from the poem "The Frog and The Nightingale" by Vikram Seth, one we did when we were in the Tenth standard. I had the whole poem memorized, all 13 paragraphs, at the time.

Anyway, it seems I am the frog, and this Cottage my Bingle Bog. 😆

Loved your thoughts here...thoughts to justify the writer again. I don't want any two cents to sound like you are defending my blunder. But thanks my dear Shas for ensuring the idea more...the over-confident, miscalculated villain...yup. we'll go with this thoery, full sail ahead.

*ahem*

imagine...okay, don't imagine, just think it from the perspective...

the general knows how much kushi loves her sister and how much arnav admires his brother. he believed, hence, that though arnav hates rituals, he will be there for akash's wedding until its over especially because according to ritual arnav and kushi MUST be present for the wedding. Their absence was worrying but he didn't really think arnav would be as challenging to his plan as to break his aetheism and "marry" the village girl. hence, the general kept his cool and remained at the temple, being there for his wife who would get suspicious if HE TOO disappeared. but it was when gupta kept looking at his letter and the marriage proceeded without ArShi and many other signs came to his notice that the general doubted his belief in arnav's action. he knew it was stupid to slip off the fact that he will elope with kushi after the marriage but he would have expected the hot-tempered arnav to "fight" him like a man instead of avoiding him completey and go and get "married"...
the reason why the general was late to realize, late to react...

is the general justified in his thoughts here? or are the justifications lame?

Thanks for considering my opinion. In fact I had just read chapter 175 and commented my confusion on the General's actions and reactions. Now that I have read your perspective, the justifications don't seem lame at all, its just that we don't usually get what is going on in the General's mind. There is always an aura of mystery around him and the reader can come up with any angle to it. I kept thinking that the General didn't think Arnav would take such a rash step for two reasons, one he didn't know the depth of Arnav's feelings for Khushi and two he was sure Khushi couldn't be forced into anything and would find her way out of any coercion.

OMG, from where did this sudden doubt come from? Was it because of what I wrote in my comment at the cottage? I agree its my fault, where I wrote only a part of my thoughts on General's lame war plan instead of giving the full view. I wrote this comment for General last week, but didn't get time to post it as I got diverted with the other discussions going on at the inn. I'll post that comment at the inn, now.
But Lin, when i register my thoughts at the inn in an interrogative form , just remember, im not questioning you or expecting answers from you. The questions are more to myself to understand the motives and thoughts behind the actions displayed by various characters of the tale. Its just for discussion, not to confuse you or make yourself doubt...
I believe whatever LH narrates to you has a reason behind. Im trying to find out the meaning, through the comments and discussions at the inn. But just remember, whatever LH narrates to you and make you pen down through your words... has a significance. Its we readers and sometimes you, who are unable to understand the reason behind that... So, never doubt what you have written already... I hope im not confusing you more with my words... 😳
Anyways, the answer to your query above is "Yes, he is perfectly justified"... He used a conventional strategy and expected the same from Lordy. But Lordy being Lordy came up with an unconventional strategy and made an unexpected move... 😲 Its that simple and very much acceptable. But its a shock to us, readers because, we expected General to use some unconventional strategy but it turned out to be Lordy. 😆 That's all... Its more of our expectations which gives rise to such questions and doubts in our mind, otherwise the tale is moving smoothly... 😊
Life can only provide us with circumstances and chances... its upto us how we cleverly utilize those situations to our favour. General and Lordy was given equal chance... But, General was not smart enough to grab his chance, he underestimated his enemy, made some bad moves... it doent mean he is not clever or alert, its just that his destiny is not favouring him, but unconsciously making him to make some blunders... 😒
