This week's release 'Barfi!' has taken a bumper opening at multiplexes in India where it opened this morning.
Producers UTV's strategy of targeting the film at elite multiplex audiences has worked massively in its favour with 'Barfi!' taking the third biggest opening of the year at these screens after blockbusters 'Agneepath' and 'Ek Tha Tiger'.
According to Box Office India, the film has opened to 85% collections in Mumbai city which is very good for a film of its genre.
The film's success is definitely a positive sign for the way in which Indian cinema is headed, proving that that lead protagonist need not be a larger than life character for a film to work at the ticket windows.
In 'Barfi!' Ranbir Kapoor plays a deaf-mute 'Chaplinesque' character while Priyanka Chopra plays an autistic character and newcomer Ileana D'Cruz the film's narrator. The film is directed by Anurag Basu and has music by Pritam.
