What it involves:
There are many important roles involved in creating one hit design in the fashion industry, some of which are detailed below. Successful fashion designers will have held many varying roles in the industry before progressing to become a Fashion Designer, that is unless your surname is Versace.

It is advisable today to start off in the world of fashion by attaining a Bachelor's Degree in Fashion Design or Costume Design, you can then look for a job in a fashion house. You will start off working long hours and for little pay but you will get great exposure to varying roles and experience of working with top professionals. If you are determined enough you can progress to a better paying position in a short time.

Paris, Milan, Tokyo, Rome London, New York and Los Angeles are the fashion capitals of the world, and if you are keen, you should consider moving to one of these capitals or at least spending some time there. Even though the competition for jobs is very high, going to shows is a great way of building up key contacts that you can use to get your foot in the door. You should also note that because many of the low skilled production jobs are moving overseas, you are better off focusing on becoming highly skilled in a niche area.

Careers in the Fashion Industry:

Fashion Artists also known as sketchers are the people who draw new designs on paper. These designs are often vague but highlight the details that are en vogue. This is the first step to creating a garment.

Fashion Designers make all the important decisions and work in more of a supervisory role to ensure that all teams are collaborating effectively and ensure that the final product is a quality garment.

Pattern Designers make the patterns based on the initial sketches and adjust them to suit many sizes.

Set Designers: are responsible for setting up of the effects used in runway shows.

Cutters are responsible for cutting out patterns from all sorts of fabric from leather to silk. This is either a manual process for once off concept designs, but more regularly it is done by machines, for mass production houses.

Sewers are responsible for sewing by hand or machine depending on the job in hand

Trend Researches note what is popular at any given time. They gather important information so they can foresee the trend the next time it's comes around.

Fashion Photographers take photographs of new designs for publications in magazines and fashion journals

Fashion Merchandisers buy clothes for shops and retail outlets. Merchandisers attend many fashion shows and negotiate with manufacturers.
