Neeta, I don't think it's fair to say Saudi Arabia is a 'backward society.' That maybe offensive to some folks here, but we shouldn't label views that are different than ours as backwards. SA is a highly patriarchal society, and I agree, the treatment of women is horrendous. What bothers me most is that, people associate the opression of women in such countries as if has to do with Islam. It doesn't, and in fact, Islam NATURALLY granted women rights that most women in western world had to fight for. Sigh... such misogynists!

No.... I don't consider myself to be obedient and traditional 😆 Trust me, no one can ever make me do anything unless I want it. I have seen some marriages work, that's why I don't mind. 😊 If people think that live-in relationship allows more freedom and less responsibilities, they are so wrong! Live-in relationships and (not arranged) marriages are quite similar.

Nope, I'm not doing that. Differnce in POVs doesn't make one POV equal to Backwardness, but what happens with women in SA is not only a POV, it is a legally accepted norm. I meant to say that Saudi Arabia is backward when it comes to 'Women's rights', which is a fact.

Islam has absolutely nothing to do with this. This is simply how the society there has evolved.

I agree when you say that Live-In relationships come with their share of responsibilities, but I don't agree with you when you say that couples in both institutions have equal freedom. Live-In Relationships are based on the principle that a couple are free to break-off & leave when they wish to, it's not the same with marriage. It isn't so easy to call it off, for various reasons & pressures.

I don't know if people are aware of this or not, but I was just going through an article on 'Misogyny' and came across this --

The Quran declares boldly that "Men are the managers of women for that God has preferred in bounty one of them over another, and for that they have expended of their property" (Sura al-Nisa 4:34), thus both setting men in authority over women but also asserting that this is so because Almighty Allah "preferred" men instead of women.
