PART II
Ten days had passed since Swayam and Sharon's break up and everything had taken a big turn in the past 10 days. Swayam and Sharon barely looked at each other and every conversation of theirs usually leaded to Sharon shouting at Swayam. The gang was surprised as to how quickly the equation between them had changed. But no one was aware of the emotional quagmire both of them were stuck in. while Swayam stayed out of Sharon's way so that she feels comfortable, Sharon royally ignored Swayam so that she doesn't feel the guilt of hurting him, which tugged at her heart.
Swayam didn't understand why Sharon was behaving like this. She wanted a break from him and he had given that. She was maybe still hurt and angry that he hadn't said anything in her defense in front of her but that didn't justify her insulting him in front of everyone.
And there Swayam was now, dressed in a pair of jeans, a white tee and a black jacket, staring at the alien surroundings as the purple party lights bounced off him. All of a sudden he felt himself pulled into a hug.
"Swayam. Thank god you came. I thought you would bail out..."
It was Rey. Swayam managed to give him a ghost of a smile. He hadn't wished to come to this merger party but Rey had left him with no choice. Swayam shifted his gaze towards the entrance and was awestruck. Sharon entered in a strapless black dress, her soft curls resting on her shoulders. She had minimal make up on and her eyes made it crystal clear; how she was feeling on the inside. She looked at Swayam lost in her. For a moment, the past had been forgotten. They both stared at each other, love sparkling in their eyes. Soon enough Sharon's gaze hardened and she broke the eye contact, walked towards Rey and hugged him. As she pulled away she wondered how she and Swayam had ended up wearing black; the sign of mourning.
-----
It was time for a couple dance. Everyone had coupled up, leaving Swayam and Sharon alone. Swayam had a blank expression on his face while Sharon glared at him, inwardly nervous. Swayam stared at Sharon, scrutinizing her face, trying to figure out what was going on in her mind. Deep in her eyes, he could see a desire to get close. Seeing his reflection in her eyes, he knew he desired the same too. But the next thing that Sharon did vexed him. She stepped back and with a cold face snapped "I can't dance with HIM. Sorry" and stormed away from the atrium leaving a stony faced Swayam behind. He looked around to see the gang look at him with wary-cum-worried faces. Without waiting for a second, Swayam stormed out too, tracing Sharon's footsteps.
-------
Sharon walked past the classrooms, dazed. It had already been 10 days since their break up'. As she stared at the ring on her hand, she chuckled dryly. Neither had she accepted the break up and nor had Swayam. Sharon remembered how Swayam had rushed up to her with an inhaler when he had caught her in the rehearsal hall, coughing. It had happened just 3 days before. Sharon sighed. Things were so good before Swayam's family came into the scene.
"Sharon. Stop!"
The sternness in his voice instilled coldness in her and without paying much heed, she continued walking. Swayam's annoyance grew and he took long strides towards Sharon. The next second she felt herself being pulled inside a classroom and pinned against a wall, right in front of Swayam's annoyed and incomprehensible face.
"What the hell! Let me go Swayam."
Silence.
"Who do you think you are? Let go off me!"
Silence.
"Swayam Shekawat! Let. Me. Go."
"And why should I do that?!"
Sharon glared at him but remained silent at the same time.
"You wanted a break Sharon, because of my family. Fine. I could see your anguish and I consented, crushing my heart in the process. I stayed out of your way so that you wouldn't fell pressurized or guilty though every cell in my body screamed at me to talk to you and make things alright. And what do I get in return?" his eyes were blazing "Insult! Tell me Sharon, do I deserve this. Is insult the only thing I can get in return?"
His expression turned vulnerable. "Maybe you are still angry with me for not standing up for you in front of you but..." he paused. "But you have known me Sharon. For the past 3 years. You know me and my love for you. Do you really think I could easily forgive anyone who raised a question on your character? Why be it my family itself."
Sharon stared at Swayam helplessly as he laid out his thoughts in front of her. She wondered if she had been one-dimensional for the past 10 days. She had drowned so much in her hurt that she had become blind to Swayam's sufferings.
"Swayam, I cannot do this. I need to stay away from your family to remain sane but at the same time I cannot stay away from you. And I also know I would be foolish to expect you to go against your family because in the end they are your family. It's like being pulled from two sides Swayam. And you know how much you affect me. So if there's a way I can stay away from you, it's only this, by hardening myself."
Swayam was frazzled. How many times were he and Sharon supposed to undergo separation when both loved each other dearly? Apart from the gap from his family, this break up was not providing any other benefit. What was the point in staying away if it made you more miserable than ever?
"Sharon..." Swayam started in a forlorn voice. "What if I promise you that my family will not bother you? What if we just stay together as two lovers and leave the family business aside for now?"
"Will you be able to do that Swayam? Defy your family traditions to keep us together?" Sharon asked, shocked at his solution.
Swayam enveloped her hands in his and kissed them softly.
"Isn't making happy the person you love the biggest tradition on earth? I am ready to do anything for you Sharon. I do not wish to see you and me live miserably just because my aunt and grandmother haven't accepted you yet."
Sharon broke into faint sobs hearing this and embraced Swayam.
"I love you Swayam but I feel horrible. Though I am happy that we can stay with each other, I cannot tear you apart from your family."
Sharon you are doing nothing of that sort. I am not going away from my family, I am just coming back to you. As of now I just want us to be together and I promise I will bring you out form your hurt and repent myself. My family will soon accept you on their own. You don't have to do anything against your wish. Just stay with me please." Swayam pleaded, his eyes intent on her.
"God. I love you Swayam"
"I love you more Sharon."
"But I am so selfish Swayam."
"Not more than me" whispered Swayam and kissed her, hoping that things soon take a good turn.
Hey you ! don't tell me there's no hope at all
Together we stand, divided we fall.
