The Last Dance
Since I killed Swayam in my very first SwaRon OS, it seemed I hadn't done justice to Sharon by doing that. So in this one, I killed her... Now it's even! *sadistic laugh*
"Let's call it a day! It's been a long one." Rey took a huge swig of water off his bottle, as he zipped up his bag kept in the far off corner of the dance studio smiling at Swayam. Swayam just nodded still sitting in the middle of room where they had spent the last hour chatting aimlessly. It truly had been a long day. They had been rehearsing for their troupe's next performance in the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival, another version of Laila Manju's decades old epic love story. Since Kria was 'very' pregnant and sadly couldn't dance such a hectic routine Rey had declined the role of Majnu that had automatically gone to Vicky with Neha as his Laila since everyone knew Swayam won't romance anyone, not even on stage, not after Sharon's death.
Swayam and Rey had taken it upon themselves to choreograph this, both alternatively taking up the role of Laila for the choreography. He remembered one of the days when it was just the two of them at the studio. While Swayam, Laila for that piece, was in Rey's arms, trying hard to looking lovingly at him. If it had been a few years back, he'd have his lips pursued tight so that he doesn't burst up in laughter doubling over, but now, he couldn't. Right then Kria had walked in, the room echoing with her laughter. Rey would've dropped Swayam if he hadn't steadied himself, as Rey ran to assist his huge as a house wife who just gave him a look that said 'I'm pregnant but I can walk on my own, thank you very much.'
"Hey Swayam, let's go! You plan on staying for the night or what?" Rey tapped him on his shoulder breaking the flow of his thoughts. He blinked a few times trying to think straight when he thought he saw Sharon instead of his own reflection in the mirrored wall. He thought he was hallucinating because of the minimal lighting in the room since Rey had switched off most of the mains.
"Uh... You carry on. I'll lock up before I leave." Swayam said looking back at Rey, who looked at him questioningly but did not say anything.
"See you tomorrow." Rey called out as he picked up his bag and left. Swayam took a deep breath as he heard the click of the door shutting itself. He looked back and to his surprise she was still there. Smilingly she held up a hand. He moved towards her slowly holding his hand up to touch her as if she had been trapped inside that glass. And surprisingly she seemed to have been freed at his touch as she climbed out of the mirror.
Taking in his hand she placed her other hand on his shoulder as if asking him to dance with her. Without saying anything he danced with her, the same old routine they used to dance, not for some competition but when they just wanted to be in each other's arms. He heard a song resonating in the background somewhere, or maybe it was in his head. The it said everything he had wanted to say to Sharon over these years. She laughed when he spun her, the melody of it resonating in the room making him smile a genuine smile that he hadn't in past years.
He held her in his arms, a tear trickling down his cheek at the feeling of having her back in his arms after so many years. She brushed her thumb over the tear trail, her doe eyes looking at him painfully. He held her hand and kissed her palm making a shudder cross her body, just like it would in the early times of their love story. She hugged him tightly putting her head on his chest as he kissed on the top of her head and rested his cheek there.
He closed his eyes and felt tears flowing down his face without a stop as he felt his arms around himself, not Sharon. He fell down breaking into loud sobs, still hugging himself. He felt the coldness of the floor against his wet cheek as he lied down his sobs taking over the sound of Sharon's musical laughter that was still echoing in the room. He didn't wish to open his eyes to see a dark room without Sharon, making him realize she was never back with him, and she never would be. Why was it that so many years after losing her to that cruel accident, everyday he woke up with a hope that he'll find her again before going to bed that day. And every night he thought, 'maybe tomorrow'. Once in his life, he had been someone who knew every sorrow in life passed as long as he knew how to live. But that seemed ages ago, a lifetime ago... when he knew how to live.
He brought his knees up to his chest and hugged them tight unable to stop his hysteric sobs. He didn't know when he fell asleep, but he knew when his mind began reeling back the memories to him as if jeering him for even falling in love or hoping that he could have a 'happily ever after' life.
The sharp rays of the sunlight falling on his face woke him up as he scrunched his eyes against the harsh light. He opened his eyes and saw himself in a cuddle on the studio floor, his face dry with all the tears and his eyes surely bloodshot red. The cruelty of fate occurring to him last night sank in to him - the dance with Sharon, her laughter, the feel of her in his arms. He could feel another batch of tears revolting to break out.
He stared outside the window at the light blue sky, the sun coming up the horizon. As it dawned on the world, it dawned upon him. Maybe it wasn't fate jesting him. Maybe it was Sharon, granting his wish of one last dance with her, that had been one of his many regrets.
He didn't know for how long he sat there just looking out of the window, hunched on the floor. But slowly he made himself get up and pick his bag. As he walked up to the door, his hand on the handle, he looked back once more. He knew he wasn't just hallucinating once again as he saw Sharon in front of the window, bathed in the sunlight, smiling at him once again... before she vanished into the mist.
He smiled as he walked out of the studio. He knew now, last night he had finally found her - in himself. And he knew she was going to be with him, dancing her last dance with him every time he danced.
