Strong like her name, hers is a rare success story, the kind dreams are made of. She dazzled on the dance floor and won the title of Dance India Dance season 2 early last year.
Since then life for Shakti Mohan has undergone a sea change. Under contract with the channel which advises her on assignments and her work schedule, Shakti Mohan was busy with stage shows for most of 2010.
Now, like her co-contestant Binny Sharma who made her debut in a lead role in Sanjog Se Bani Sangini three months after finishing fourth in the dance show, Shakti too has stepped up from dance to the shooting floor of a serial. She plays the lead in a tri-weekly youth show which centers on dance.
Did Shakti take inspiration from Binny? "No, no… I was not looking forward to acting in serials, certainly not in the saas-bahu kind of serials that are on air," she clarifies.
So how did she take the plunge then?
"I liked the concept of Dil Dostii Dance. It deals with a small-town girl's passion for dance and how she succeeds against all odds," she adds.
But since it's not a dance show but a fictional drama, Shakti had to prepare herself for her acting debut. "I attended a workshop and went through a lot of rehearsals to learn technical details and get my expressions right. It was tough but I was ready a the challenge," she admits.
Elaborating on her role, Shakti narrates, "I play Kria. She comes from Dehradun to Mumbai for her studies. Though she comes to do her MBA, she is actually interested in dance and hence joins a college which has the most happening dance group. But she ends up getting mocked and ragged. So she forms her own dance group and challenges her seniors and wins."
For Shakti, dance will continue but acting will also go alongside. "This show is a learning experience. Let's see how things shape up," she adds as she ends on a positive note.
