The Intelligence of Chandragupta Maurya

Chanakya said to the lady: "Aryaa! Aapke bete vasthav mein bahut bhudhimaan hai! Mein uske aacharan aur vyaktitiv ke saath bahut prabhavit hoon."

"Woh hamare ek lauthe bete hai aur kafi buddhimani bhi! Replied the mother and added with pride, "aur Kuch saal pehle vah ek paheli hal ki jo poore Pataliputra me kisine bhi nahi kar paya"

"Aisa hai? Paheli kya tha?"

"Aas pass ke rajya ke raja ne ek sher ko pinjare me khaid karke bheja tha. Kaha gaya tha ki sher ko bina pinjre khole hi bahar lana chahiye. Kai log isse janne ki koshish ki hai!

Par Chandu, jo uss samay saath varsh katha, usko laga ki woh pinjar vasthav me moum (Wax) ka tha. Uss ne 2 chad (Rods) garm karke pinjar ke neech laga diya. Jald hi pinjar pigal gaye aur sher ko bahar laya gaya hai!

Hamara raja bhi bhajut prasannn hua hai aur mere bete ko prasansa ki.!"

"Wah keval budhimaani hi nahi par ek janma raja bhi hai! Agar uchit siksha aur gahan parikshan diya jata hai mujhe yakin hai ki wah ek mahan raja sabith hoga," said Chanakya.

"kripya aap itna jor se bath nahi kare! Hamare dushnam har jaga par hai! Ae sashan ka krodh hi tho hai jo hame yaha is sunsan jagah aane keliye vivash kar diya hai.

Wah ek lauta beta hai hamare jo prabhu ne hamare jeevan ki is saanj mein diya hai! Mein usse har keemat par surakshit dekhna chahthi hoon".

"Yaha tak ki uss se alag hone ka keemat par bhi?" questioned Chanakya.

"Haan! Agar uska jeevan aur kalyan ka sunishchith rahe tho! Hum prabhu dwara diye huye kai muddhon ka samna ki aur sir Chandu bacha hai. Mein usse hamesha meri aankhon ke samne dekhna chahthi hoon. Mein usse door bhejne keliye tayyar hoon agar uske suraksha ka aswasan mila tho.

Mein bahut pehle hi Magadh chodna chahthi thi, lekin Senapati ji ne apne matrubhoomi chodna sehmath nahi tha aur usne Nanda ki Sena ka Senapati bangane, jeevika keliye.

Jo bhi Mahamatya aur Chank ke saath hua uske baad hum yahan aane ka faisla kiya. Halaki yahan door hai aur kafi rajdhani se abhi tak mahan aasanka me yaha rehthe hai.

Kal jab tum mere dwar par dastak di, mein ne socha ki tum raja ke sainik ho. Aur vasthav mein dhar gayi thi... Lo wah aagaye hai.

Senapathi Maurya and Chanakya

Chanakya looked sideways to see an old bearded person coming with a mule loaded with grains and vegetables. Despite his advanced age the Senapati was walking erect.

As he came closer, the lady introduced him: "he is Chanakya from Pataliputra". "Chanak's son, aren't you?" that tall, bearded and wide-eyed person asked. He still had his sword tucked in the cummerbund and also carried a quiver full of sharp arrows and a bow.

"Yes I am, Arya" and then he narrated his entire tale of two escapes from Pataliputra and his stay at Takshila. Then he showed him the letter he had received from Katyayan.

"Yes did well by coming here. If all the well wisheres of Magadh run away from it, how can you redeem it? Especially young and educated persons like you! I am glad you chose this place to spend time till you are needed there. I am also very grateful to Katyayan for all that he has been doing while staying there, a tongue among sharp teeth. And I also hope that your association will help Chandu tremendously. Here we have no good teachers and Chandu is getting rather wild. I can teach him a bit about martial arts only."

Then Chanakya began to live there like a family member and wait fro Katyayan's promised letter.

The Teaching Begins

He had grown especially fond of CGM whom he had begun to instruct. He found him to be an exceptionally good archer and swordsman, despite his tender age. He could shoot down flying kites with his arrows.

Chanakya also began to teach him other subjects and instill in him a sense of responsibility. The horse which Chanakya had brought along gave the lad a good opportunity to become an expert horse rider.

Chandu responded to Chanakya's sentiments so well that he might be prepared to disobey his parents but not his teacher's commands.

The Senapati and his wife treated Chanakya very well. Seeing Chandu, Chanakya was reminded of the prophesy made by sage Dandayan. 'Is he the dream he was referring to?'

Chanakya would teach Chandu not abstruse subjects but mostly the practical, earthy lessons. "This land of ours, so rich, so well endowed by nature's bounty shouldn't be weak. And don't think you belong to only Magadh, but to the whole of Aryavartha. It is out duty to defend out Aryavartha and make it the finest country in the world!"

Chanakya noticed that the Maurya family was quite influenced by Lord Buddha's teaching. They are the fortunate people to get the some of the ashes of Shakyamuni (Lord Buddha).

But Chanakya would tell Chandu: "You may owe allegiance to any faith, but remember that your own land, your people and their welfare must remain the foremost consideration in your mind.

Shakyamuni taught us to live with peace and compassion but not to use these sentiments to hind one's cowardice. I am sorry to say this but that is what his so called followers are doing. Show everyone courtesy, consideration and kindness, but also assess what response you are getting.

A vile man exploits these for his selfish ends. There is no harm in acting foul with a foul man, or else you can't check the spread of evil.

We must differentiate between the sin and the sinner and slay them if you can't check the menace by other means. No doubt we must hate the sin and not the sinner.

If a king stoops so low for his carnal satisfaction, then he is no more a king and must be killed or replaced. "

"Like our king Nanda," Chandu said, startling Chanakya by his remark. Chandu's remark revealed that he knew a lot about the happenings in Pataliputra than Chanakya imagined. "Yes, like out wicked king" Chanakya had to agree.

After a week of Chanakya's arrival at Pippilivan, a secret messenger arrived from Pataliputra, sent by Katyayan. He brought no message fro Chanakya, but some financial help for Senapati ji. Later he learnt from Senapati Maurya that, Katyayan used to send such gift once or twice in a year. But when the messenger asked Senapati ji: "is the traveler comfortable", Chanakya realized that Katyayan's objective of sending the messenger was to ascertain his safe arrival in Pippilivan.

Journey to the far off Destination

It was nearly a month after that the really disturbing message was received from Pataliputra. One of the medicants reached there to convey that Katyayan had been deposed and his whereabouts were not known; and that he possibly been slain! This was quite unexpected. Now Chanakya was at loose end and Senapati a helpless onlooker. Chanaka knew that he couldn't stay put in Magadh any longer. But he don't want to go alone. How could a dream remain separated from the eyes of the vision from the sight? He broached the subject to Senapati ji.

"Now everybody's future is uncertain here with our protector gone! Continuous stay in Magadh poses a danger to us. We must shift," Chanakya suggested.

"No question of my going back anywhere. I may be a spent force but I can't leave my people in the lurch," the Senapati asseted but he was surprised to see Chandu speaking to the contrary. Chanakya always encouraged him to participate in serious discussions.

"Sire, staying here might endanger the lives of all of us. King's hostility for you is well known. If the axe can fall on Katyayan ji, I don't think that we will be spared".

"No Chandu! I won't flee at the twilight of my life. I am a Senapati who shouldn't turn back even if my army is facing defeat. Till the last drop of my blood I'd not leave the battle field. But I'm really worried for you. You've your entire life before you. You must be protected", Senapati ji replied.

Chanakya thought it was high time that he made the offer. He said:"I totally agree with you Senapati Ji that Chandu's life ought to be protected. If you permit then I may take him along with me to Takshila, a safe place. There I can provide him full security."

Moora couldn't help saying:"But Takshila is very far off. The danger lrks on every step you take to reach the place!"

Senapati ji said in a conciliatory tone: "Harden your heart, dear. The choice is between sending your son to a far off land with hopes of his survival or risk his life here!"

Chanakya reassured them: "Persons like Chandu are born not only to face danger but also to overcome them for sure. I think we mustn't delay our departure."

Soon preparations were made and the doting mother provided so much for the journey --- clothes, food and even weapons-that Chanakya found it inconvenient to load the entire luggage on one horse also to be used for carrying two travelers. But Senapati ji manage to procure a mule for carrying the luggage and the travelleres to the far off destination departed amidst heart rending scenes of farewell.

Kautilya's Arthasastra

kautilya also known as vishnu gupt or chanakya lived in 4tn 3rd century.. his most celebrated work the arthasastra is believed to been composed some tym b4 321 - 296 bc

as you already know his details am jumping to the policy of kautilya

Mandala system- kautilya's primary concern is with a central king whom he defines as the potential conqueror orvijigishu.. located inside a well defined circle ofkingdoms or mandala, the ultimate objective of the king's effort is the atenment of happiness which result from conquest..

power is the means used by the king for attainment of happiness

kautilya starts w8 the fundamental assumptionsthat any two kings whose territorty are geographially contiguous are natural emnemies of each other. on the same logic the king whose territory iscontiguous to enemy is an enemy of enemy
and hence a friend to king..
kautilya defines ten kings in int system

central kng or vijigishu
the enemyinfront or ari
the friend or mitra
the enymies friend or arimitra in front
the friend's friend or mitramitra
the enemies frnd's frnd or arimitra mitra
the enymy in rear or parshanigraha
the friendinthe rear or akranda
the enemies friend in rear or parshanigrahasara
the frnd'ds frnd in rear or akrandasara
in addition
therea are intermediery or madhyama
and neutral or udasina kings

further divides neutality into 3 states-
stana (keeping quite)
asana (withdrawal from hostility)
upeksha (negligence)

this is a matter of some theoritical significance and distinguises kautilyas model of an international system from that balance of power we shall see presently

the 12 kings as i listed above together constitute kautilyas international system
the conqueoror his frnd and his frnds are the three primary kings constituing a circle of states. each king has five elements of sovereignty minister ,territory, fort. treasury, army.
hene the cicle of states consists of 18 elements ..

but the enemy intermediery and neutrals kings are also potential conquerers having circles of their own. alsoo consists 18 elements

there are 4 cirles and 72 elements in international system
king is fountain of all policy
ministers play advisory role
