Dear Akka and Saras Perima,

One doubt. Is today's Sarangi same as what Kalki referred as Yaazh in Ponniyin Selvan ? Please clarify if you have any idea.

I remember Mani Megalai used to play it, if not Vanathi and Kundavi in PS.

Thank you. 😃

Dear Akka, Sands , Shailaja and PnP lovers,

I completed 6 part series in the weekend of the 1995 BBC serial. I will follow Akka's advice of reading the novel again.

What I liked most in BBC Series :

Darcy Portrayal ( The actor got it absolutely fantastic) - In some scenes Only his eyes spoke
The Dialogues and the language ( What kind of reverence and calling out/ greeting each other)
The Mrs & Mr Bennett both were very good. ( Mrs as the mother was too good)
Aunt was good and Uncle was Okayish.
Authenticity of the era - Loved those horse cartridges. ( This is where BBC kind of approach scores - No constraints on budgets at all ?)
Jane came as too goody goody I thought but may be the character was like that.

Mr. Collins actor as Akka said was also fantastic. Why did I remember Neville Longbottom suddenly when I saw this character ? I might be confused - His acting reminded me of some one from HP Series.

Pemberly Estate - Oh my god . If someone is going to get it, Darcy enna Darcy yoda thatha va kooda kalyanan pannikalam. 😉

I had seen some of these in New Engliand(Rhode Island) as well as in UK ( Cardiff) - UK Countryside is something to die for.

Jane was too goody goody even in the novel. Eliza too exclaims the same in the original novel. She remarks that she will never be able to be so good like Jane who cannot think wrong or at least hate any person, even the people who have wronged her the most like Caroline Bingley.

In the original novel, Eliza's love and change of heart towards Darcy dates to the day she saw Pemberley for the first time. She even acknowledges it unabashedly. She says it would be something to be a mistress of such an estate. Darcy didn't have a title but he was no less than any of the nobility. He was filthy rich.

And Jane tries a lot to exculpate Darcy and Wickham to which Lizzy says thay she cannot defend both. One has to be wrong.

The change of heart was surely earlier than that. She reconsidered all the past events after reading the letter and tells Jane so. She admits to herself that she had been prejudiced towards Darcy much earlier than she visited Pemberley. But yes. Pemberley must have made her 'fall in love' and the housekeeper's views made her reevaluate Darcy all over again.

You are very warm, Sandhya, for this is a picture of one kind of yaazh. There is a good article on the subject at http://www.indianetzone.com/56/yazh.htm

But Sri, the instrument Manimekalai was shown playing in Ponniyin Selvan was like a veena.

No, no, Shailaja, that she changed her views about Darcy on seeing Pemberley is a joke Elizabeth herself makes later, when telling Jane that she is engaged to him. It is not to be taken seriously.

What Sandhya has noted is correct, that Elizabeth has, after reading his letter, already reevaluated him and Wickham both, but she is not yet in love with him. When she sees Pemberley, she thinks that to be mistress of that place might be something, but immediately she also feels that she would not have been able to invite her aunt and uncle there and the mood passes. Then comes what all the housekeeper says about him, and finally his own totally altered behaviour with her and the Gardiners, which, put together, produces the major shift.

Interesting Responses.

But I am somehow tempted to think that Darcy gets disturbed by Elizabeth at the very sight on Day 1 when they meet in the ball.

It may not be that high regard , admiration and love which he proclaims later when he proposes. but there is something about her that catches his attention from first glance.

Sands - Would you agree ?

Yes - The short segment with Gardiners and Lizzy was superbly shot. The way he comes back , gives respect to Gardiners , takes them for a walk , engages with Lizzy and gives his hand while helping her get onto Cartridge was stuff dreams are made of.

Darcy was fantastic. He truly warmed upto Lizzy and showed it - There is no uneasiness at all.
