Akka, you wicked creature, this is NOT fair! 😉You are pulling my leg so hard that I shall surely topple over! 😆

The reason why it looks as if I concentrate on Rajat's Chandragupta is that as of now, he is, especially in tandem with Chanakya, the only thing worth looking at in this show.

It is not true that I praise only Rajat's CGM and pillory the others, is it now? Confess! I was so harsh on him for his babbling in most irresponsible manner to the daasi, because he deserved it. But this time, though superficially the cases looked similar, actually he had a logical reason for what he did , and so I have defended him on the incident in Alexander's tent.

As for this Chanakya, I had very serious doubts about him after watching him play a very different role in Ashoka, but he has proved me wrong, and I have grown to like him a great deal.

So, my very dear Akka, I am not to be classified with the redoubtable Subbudu! I always play fair and I do try not to be unnecessarily caustic.

My dear Shyamala,

The audience or rasikas of a Carnatic music concert can be classified into 3 different categories. One, is the general audience, who come to listen to some good music as an entertainment or time pass. Another class is those who enjoy only good music, soothing to the ears, not very critical about the nuances or grammar of the "kutcheri padhdhadi"i.e., the traditional system or about the repertoire of the artiste. I come under this category.
The third one is the elite group that has all ears for music, very critical about any lapses on the part of the performer, but always makes it a point to be present in the first row at the program of their favourite artist, appreciating his/her every attempt to draw the audience to his/her fold by cheering him/her always, but at he same time critical about the accompanying artistes.
Most of the viewers here are of the first and second categories, but you belong to the third one. You view everything with a critical eye but your appreciation of the main artiste stands out distinctly. Like the admirer in the first row of the auditorium!
It is indeed a talent!
👏
Yours

Saraswathi Akka.

Me ? Pulling your leg? Escape...!

Thani avardhanam in the kutcheri!

No worries Shyamala, Subbudu did not have anyone as his favourite. No one escaped his touchstone.

Well, Akka, I do have to observe things minutely if I am to analyse anything seriously. So the attention to detail is inevitable, with all that comes in its wake.

As for Rajat, he has really not had much to do in Episode 12, of Tuesday, and Episode 13 of last night, bar the soliloquy after having disposed Nandini carefully on her bed (it was incomprehensible that there were no daasis hanging around there!) . So I have not said anything about him in No.12, and No.13 will come up only on Saturday. I liked him very much in the scenes with Chanakya in No.11, and I have said so here.

I was born and brought up at Pondicherry. My mother was an auditioned AIR artiste at Pondicherry. Her name is Jyothirmayi. We are natives from Andhra Pradesh but shifted to Pondicherry as Dad got a government job in that place.

Mom came from a family of musicians. I am told that all the nine generations before her were also talented and acclaimed musicians. She used to give concerts at our place and also teach a number of students.

But she is not so well known outside our place. She was personally never very ambitious. I learnt vocal music for a number of years. Amma even wanted me to take up music as my profession. But somehow I did not want to make a profession out of music. I learnt for my pleasure. I sing for my pleasure! So that's it about my Amma and Me!

If from my Amma's side, we have generations of musicians, from Appa's side, we have generations and generations of hardcore academics, teachers, and professors. My Dad was one himself! I acquired my taste and love for literature from him.

Now I am neither in my Mom's nor Dad's profession! I am married and living in US doing something very different from what I grew up learning and seeing. But I guess that's life! Since I am a Telugu by birth who grew up in a Former French Tamil colony, I speak Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, and a little of French as well, apart from English! That's why I see movies in many Indian languages! I have a fascination for historical fiction. So I never miss any TV series in that genre.

In those days, I never used to miss any of his article in "The Hindu" during the music season in Chennai. And still later from CGM. Hope she is not turned into Ruqaiya 2. If Nandini is Durdara then someone like the Helena as portrayed here would suffice to drive anyone to Sanyas. I wouldn't be surprised if Ekta portrays her as the one who switched the poisoned plate to Durdhara much like Ruqaiya afeem-ing Salim. 😔

Incidentally i have often wondered why a young dashing and capable emperor like CGM would renounce his throne and starve himself to death at the age of 42. He conquered such huge territories within such a short span of time, established Unified India, stabilised the economy and society and then quickly gave up everything to his young son and adopted Jain Sanyas. 🤔 Why would Chanakya allow that? Surely Ekta's version would be his Amar Prem with Nandini without whom life and hard fought and established Bharatvarsha would also have meant nothing to him. Helena's extremes and obsessions might be an added factor.😳

The khargosh was left to die - and her Jo mera nahin, wo jiye ya mare, mujhe koyi faraq nahin padta! Chhoda use maine nahin, usne mujhe tha..pretty much sums up her approach to a disloyal beloved, animal or human. Malayaketu, with his glad eye already wandering towards the wide-eyed Nandini, had better look out😉. Hell, the old saying has it, hath no fury like woman scorned. Or deluded.

4th century BC women seem to specialize in hiding stilettos in their hairdo, or perhaps it was a Greek style that Nandini copies from her new BFF.😉

😆

Nandini: Same old chulbulapan: But last night, she proved that whatever she might lack in the royal graces, she has a good bit of regal arrogance. This was on full display when she stared unbelievingly at Dushyant aka Chandragupta when he proferred her paayal, smirked triumphantly as he had to go down on his knees to fasten it around her ankle, and finally looked across with patent pleasure at her father, who had been the one to force Chandragupta to do that.

Would an ordinary soldier allowed such closeness with a high born princess and actually allowed to touch her and fasten the anklet around her feet! Weird! Also the total absence of daasis and soldiers when he brings an unconscious Nandini to her chambers...it was like anyone could walk into a princess' chambers and put her on ( or for that matter lift her off) her bed. It was unbelievable.

Chandragupta-Chanakya

Bhay aur bhavana: Now we finally come to the piece de resistance, the marvellous scenes between Chandragupta and his mentor. I have watched them three times back to back, and they are entrancing each time.

Yes.👍🏼

Part I-: Target Magadha: This segment was truly fabulous- both for the splendid lines, and for the actions and reactions of the two protagonists. It would be impossible to say, as both Chanakya and Chandragupta demonstrated anew the unique strength and the symbiotic nature of their bond, which of the two came out on top.

As he answers Chandragupta's surprised query as to why he has contradicted his own teachings -Aapne mujhe hamesha bhavanaon ko harana sikhaya, parantu aaj aap swayam bhavanaon se haar gaye? , Chanakya's face, turned towards the fire, seems frozen, as if he could see, in the dancing flames, the dark future of his belovedMathrubhoomi under the heel of the foreign conqueror.

Not just the bhoomi, but an entire civilization that flourished since the beginning of any world civilization was under threat. The regional differences had disrupted the unity and given way for the invaders. Ambhi and the likes might have just done what Raja Jaichand did 1500 years later if not for Chanakya and CGM. It was Bharatvarsh's good fortune that the strongest of the later 'videshis', the Mughal-e-Azam was no truant but a lover of Bharat and he sought to co-exist with mutual respect. But Chanakya couldn't be sure that the Macedonians wouldn't take over completely like the EIC did centuries later. He sought to prevent rather than cure and with CGM succeeded. But India was not not lucky enough the third time around with the British. We didn't have a Chanakya to prevent. Anyway the Mathrubhoomi's precious sons led by MK Gandhi rose to the situation to cure.

As he turns to answer Chandragupta, his voice is soft, almost like a plea for understanding: Bhay ko harane ke liye bhavanaon ka bal aavashyak hota hai, Chandra! Prashna keval Takshashila ya Magadh ka nahin hai, prashna hai sampoorna Bharatbhoomi ki raksha ka. ... Is bhay se mujhe aur hamari mathrubhoomi ko mukt karna, yahi ab tumhara jeevan lakshya hai, Chandra.

His voice becomes more urgent, more demanding: Vachan do, Chandra, ki hamari mathrubhoomi ki mitti ke maan ki raksha karne ke liye, yadi isme milna bhi pade to bhi tumhein sweekar hai!

Then the final exhortation, the mantra by which Chanakya lives, and by which he wants his bestshishya too to live and, if need be, die. Sabse pehle Mathrubhoomi hogi! Bharat maata sabse upar hogi!!

And as Chandragupta, seemingly lost in a trance of his own, does not respond, a half pleading , half disturbed appeal: Kya hua, Chandra? It is only when Chandragupta comes out of that strange reverie and murmurs: Mujhe aisa bhan hua ki main yeh sab pehle bhi sun chukha hoon..that Chanakya's face and eyes relax in exultant relief: Iska arth hai ki maine tumhein chunkar koyi bhool nahin ki!..

It is a compliment from the CVs to the viewers that they did not, at this point, insert a flashback to the patriotic perorations of Shishunaag and Suryagupta that Chandra, then still in his mother's womb, had heard and soaked up, Abhimanyu fashion.

So the plan takes shape, to identify and attack not Padmanand's strength, but his greatest weakness. The identity of this greatest weakness is not mentioned between the guru and theshishya, but no prizes for guessing, right!😉

Then comes the grand definition of what Chanakya, and their Mathrubhoomi, both want from Chandragupta.

Magadh aur Bharat ko ek aisa raja chahiye jiski na koyi durbalta ho, aur jise na koyi bhay ho..With a protective, affectionate arm around his protege's shoulders, Wo raja tum banoge, Chandra, kyonki tumhare pas khone ke liye kuch bhi nahin, aur paane ke liye sab kuch hai!

Time alone will tell if Nandini, now so intent on becoming her father's sabse badi shakti, will one day become the same for Chandragupta or, as Padmanand says of himself, his one and onlydurbalta.

👏 Beautifully written. These lines were as wonderful as the scene itself. The sense of urgency and height of feelings evident in both.

Aunty this is a fun post on how it would be if Arthurian Characters roamed CN land!

This whole story begins in the distant past, a time of political and social unrest in India. There was no leader worth the name at the helm of affairs, and those in power were absolutely corrupt and tyrannical. That was the time when a great leader rose to power.

He was a warrior sans pareil. He was Sir Parvatak Arthurketu. He established his mettle by catching the Javelin of Excalibur thrown with the velocity of light by Queen Gueneverelene and hitting the bulls eye with it. After that he married Gueneverelene, went about wandering the country side fighting battles to save the honor of Gueneverelene and getting saved by her with hair pin knives from VFX tigers.

He had several prominent knights who represented him. They were Madam Launcelotini, Sir Galahad Gupt, Don Quixoto Nand, etc Though all these knights represented him, they could not stand the sight of each other, leave alone sitting together amicably around a round table. Madam Launcelotini was Don Quixoto Nand's Daughter. Her mother was Lady of the Fake, Avantika.

He had a teacher and mentor who favored one of his knights Sir Galahad Gupt more than him. He was the magician Merlinakya. Sir Galahad Gupt to do him justice was so pure at heart that he was untouched by the feeling of love. There was only one lady in his life. And that was Bharath Mata on whose behalf he fought all his battles.

This story also has its share of antagonists like Lady Mooragan who hated his knight Don Quixoto Nand so much that she wanted to destroy him and those who supported him. What none of them knew was that Sir Galahad Gupt was the son of Lady Mooragan.

Sir Parvatak Arthurketu despite being happily married had some extra marital intentions towards Madam Launcelotini of which the said lady knight was perfectly unaware. Launcelotini was so anxious to prove herself as the best knight and decided to go and save Queen Gueneverelene when the latter was kidnapped by miscreants.

Sir Galahad Gupt also wanted to go and do the saving because it was his life's mission to save streeyon who were in distress, drop them off to their tents on horses, brush off lizards from their vastras, etc. All this was very good for the perfectly white halo round him and kept it permanently whitewashed.

But since he could not afford to go when Launcelotini was fighting, as for one he could never stand her face, two he could not afford to show her his face, he quietly waited till she was knocked off in the fight before he saved Queen Gueneverelene. So that was a short account on the adventure of the kidnapped queen.

Hope you liked this adventure! More still to follow after I see CN!
