Rehaan returned to Lucknow/India after many years abroad - his mom had sent him away following his father's death/murder and had forbidden him from returning. We never learnt any more on that angle.

Naturally, his mom was furious to learn of his arrival; a plan he had actioned via. his dadi. On his return she forbade him from making contact with Sana and her family, as they no longer belonged to the same social-status as them. Thus, it became apparent that Rehaan's young love/friendship with Sana had been a huge factor in his sending.

Until his arrival, Sana remained hopeful, so much so that she went to darga every Thursday evening to pray and tie a dhaaga for his return/in remembrance of their early love. However, on his return, she appears hostile towards him. She finds it difficult to forgive him for taking so long to return alongside the fact that she fears he may leave again breaking her heart completely.

During this time, Rehaan meet's with Anisa, a care-free girl who is just full of life. Anisa begins to fall for Rehaan, and mistakes numerous actions and situations as confirmation that her and Rehaan's feelings are mutual. This misunderstanding is resolved at the Freshers' party, where Rehaan is left fuming by Sana's attitude.

Anisa then faces another tragedy - her father collapses and is admitted into an expensive hospital. Rehaan and his dadi overhear her trying to sell some jewellery in aim of collating enough money to pay the hospital fees; and as Rehaan leaves the hospital (having paid the fees' anonymously) he meet's with his friend Shafqat, who tells him that Sana has agreed to marry someone else.

Rehaan meets with an accident whilst driving in a non-responsive state. Anisa takes him to hospital; and then drags Sana to his hospital room. On awaking, Sana breaks her resolve and admits she loves Rehaan. They promise to stay together, always.

As Anisa leaves them, she meets with the doctor, who suggests that Anisa should take her father to Mumbai for specialised heart treatment.
