The Reverse Flick-Outlook India's review

CINEMA: CHAKE DE INDIA
The Reverse Flick

It has only hockey, not cricket. Yet, this SRK-starrer has hit it big.

Namrata Joshi

Going to see Chak De India could have been rather like attending a bland, earnest lecture on issues like religion, regionalism, gender bias, patriotism. But this film about a disgraced hockey player who coaches a ragtag team of girls from all corners of India to win the World Cup has turned out to be an irresistibly appetising dish. It's a simple, unpretentious and endearing film about a now unfashionable game, and the underdogs who play it—be they Muslims, tribals, small-town girls or hailing from obscure corners of the country's Northeast.

At the box office too, the film began as an underdog, opening with an unusually bad Friday.

But word-of-mouth rave reviews soon had the crowds pouring in. By Independence Day, the magic had worked. Ironically, it is in Shahrukh Khan's stronghold, the overseas market, that Chak De has been a slow starter—despite opening big (No. 11 in the UK and No. 20 in the US), box-office takings still haven't matched previous SRK films.

But then Chak De is not a normal SRK film. It has no heroine or villain, no romance and song 'n dance. It's been made on a shoestring budget of about Rs 15 crore. But already, its estimated net earnings are pitched at a neat Rs 35 crore, with approximately Rs 12 crore coming in the first week itself (according to Film Information).

Critically, the film has scored a clear goal. It's certainly SRK's most well-appreciated film and performance in recent times, other than Ashutosh Gowariker's Swades. In fact, Chak De is well on the way to becoming the most loved Hindi film in recent times. The enthusiastic audience reactions in movie halls indicates that it has built up a surge of the kind matched only by Rang De Basanti and Lage Raho Munnabhai last year. Even a hardened Yash Raj critic like Anurag Kashyap, the director of Black Friday, says it's the best Yash Raj production since the 1995-released Dilwale Dulhania Le Jaayenge; what's more, "it has set standards one would like to follow".

Chak De is not without flaws—its characters include a hammy mother and a hammier commentator. But it triumphantly demonstrates how the most predictable of plots and the most well-worn stereotypes can be reinvented to enchanting freshness. "It displays a most skilful use of cliches," says sociologist Shiv Visvanathan.

Comparisons with other sports films—Escape to Victory, Bend It Like Beckham, Hip Hip Hurray, Lagaan—are inevitable. They have all had similar arcs—from defeat to victory, from disgrace to redemption, against tremendous odds. But look closer, and Chak De is significantly different in two crucial aspects—it pitches most convincingly for hockey, and it seamlessly weaves together the twin issues of sports and women's empowerment.

It would be foolhardy to think the film will revive interest in hockey. But it does effectively break the stranglehold of cricket on our collective imagination, even if for just those three hours. It takes clever potshots at cricket —in one scene SRK acerbically observes: "Hamari hockey mein cricket ki tarah chhakke nahin hote".

The other masterstroke is the way it projects women's empowerment through sports. Writer Jaideep Sahni, who previously brought small-town North India into sharp focus with Bunty Aur Babli, unleashes 16 new Bablis in Chak de—all with the guts and gumption to make it big, but hampered by problems ranging from demanding families to badly behaved cricketer-boyfriend.

All the girls fit their roles to a T, thanks to casting director Abhimanyu Ray. Some of the most minor women characters especially stand out, like assistant coach Krishnaji or the team bully Bindia Naik."We chose from 1,000-odd girls and went for unknown faces so as to not draw attention to individuals but to show them as a team," says Abhimanyu.

The gender issue is seminal here but not shrill, it's a battle which stops short of being confrontational. It's a fight not for equality but harmony. The most wonderful moment of the film is when the Indian men's team lifts their sticks as a mark of appreciation for the game and the women lift theirs back—hesitantly, tentatively. It's a moment of camaraderie, a building of bridges across the gender divide. It's heartening that this tiny moment of gender accord has been realised by a few good men—producer Aditya Chopra, director Shimit Amin, writer Sahni and, of course, actor SRK.

Last but not the least, Chak De is significant as a film in which, like Swades, SRK gets a rare chance to play a character rather than be a star. It's also just the second film (the first being Kamalahaasan's Hey Ram) where he plays a Muslim, not another Rahul or Raj. And most importantly, it's perhaps the only film where SRK plays himself—a cosmopolitan, liberal, Indian Muslim.

Chakde! India

Director: Shimit Amin
Cast: Shahrukh Khan, Vidya Malvade, Tanya Abrol, Sandia Furtado, Lalhmingkimi Khiangte, Shubhi Mehta,
Film Information: Contains mild language, violence and sex references
Length: 149 mins
Release: Friday 10 August 2007 by Yash Raj Films

A touching film which brings out patriotism.

The film opens on Kabir Khan (Shah Rukh), India's once famous hockey player who misses that decisive, moment against Pakistan and is blamed for his team's defeat in the finals.

With his career ruined, a disgraced Kabir disappears from the public eye.

Seven years on, he reappears as a coach for a bunch of feisty girls who know nothing about the game.

Kabir is given three months to train his team for the Australian Hockey World.

It is here that the girls' determination, dignity, integrity and skills are put to the test whilst Kabir gets another chance to reclaim his lost honour.

This sports based film turns out to be a spellbinding experience due to Amin's excellent direction, a brilliant screenplay and well defined characters.

The movie grips you by surprise as you start vying for the girls when seeing them going through various emotional challenges and upheavals in order to achieve their goal.

Once again, Shah Rukh Khan wins you over with another award winning performance.

He uses his eyes and facial expressions to convey his innermost emotions of frustration, anger, vulnerability and most of all hopefulness for his team.

The girls get ample footage to exhibit their individual natures and personality clashes during the training sessions which are gradually resolved into a combined team spirit as they enter the final phase of the hockey tournament.

On the whole Chakde! India is a touching film which brings out the patriotic feeling about one's homeland. A must-see!

The Take
Mintty Tejpal reviews Chak De India

Good Stick Work

Film: CHAK DE INDIA
Director: SHIMIT AMIN
Starring: SHAH RUKH KHAN, VIDYA MALVADE, ANJAN SRIVASTAVA, JAVED KHAN

CHAK DE is unique on several counts. First it's a fullon commercial film on sport, except the sport isn't cricket. Then it stars several non-actor hockey players, who collectively steal the show. Finally, Shah Rukh Khan goes through the film sporting stubble and minus a female lead.

A timeless story about an underdog team that makes it big, Chak De is yet another winner from the Yash Raj stable. Directed by Shimit Amin, who made the crisp Ek Hasina Thi, written by the talented and versatile Jaideep Sahni, Chak De is nuanced and fast-paced with most of its emotions in the right place.

Plus you get to ogle Shah Rukh in shorts. SRK plays Kabir, Indian hockey team captain, who misses a crucial penalty stroke against Pakistan, and is branded a traitor by the rapacious media. Sigh! These pesky TV news types. Except these things actually do happen in India.

A hounded Kabir disappears, never to play again. Years later he returns to coach the women's hockey team, a thankless task no one else wants to do. But our hero is seeking retribution, a fact that the sports ministry babus don't understand. But we theaudience do.

A diverse bunch of players from states like Punjab, Manipur and Jharkhand land up for the training camp. This is where the screenplay and dialogue is masterly —delightful little cameos and rivalries emerge. Komal Chautala, a slip of a girl with killer Haryanvi logic versus the tall, genteel Preeti Sabharwal. Balbir, the wellbuilt player from Punjab with a short fuse and a big punch. Bindiya, the best player with the maximum attitude. A terrific duo from Jharkhand.

Assisted by a Mayawati-like lady, Shah Rukh takes the talented, scrappy bunch of girls and moulds them into a killer team. The usual happens — tough training schedules, few players rebel, camps form, Coach resigns, then a killer moment of realisation and team spirit emerges. The crucial hockey sequences are shot beautifully and edited crisply.

Chak De is funny, uplifting and brings a lump to your throat. Sure there are easy generalisations, but they pass by.The girls, specially Chautala and Balbir, are outrageously funny, while Shah Rukh crafts a masterly furrow onto his dimples.

Curiously, before Chak De began, the familiar strains of Jana Gana Mana appeared on screen. Used to the Mumbai practice of playing the national anthem before a movie, I dutifully stood up. Other Dilliwasis followed, hesitantly. The National Anthem played out along with beautiful shots — then ended with an Airtel logo. Hey, is that allowed? Can a brand play the national anthem as part of its advertisement, thus forcing audiences to stand up and take notice? Hmm.

Age-old problem?

Shah Rukh Khan wants to work with younger, fresher actresses now. And no, he's not looking at Aishwarya Rai playing the lead role opposite him in Robot as the script demands a younger actress

Posted On Sunday, August 19, 2007
Mumbai Mirror Bureau

At 42, we've heard that Shah Rukh Khan is all set to get younger. He wants to work with younger, fresher actresses now, rather than the top stars he has been working with earlier.

This is showing in the casting of many of his latest films like Om Shanti Om (Deepika Padukone), Chak De (a gang of young girls), etc. In Shankar's Robot too, his heroine is not going to be Aishwarya Rai, as reported.

A source says, "It is certainly not going to be Aishwarya Rai as reported in the media. Shah Rukh is looking for an actress who can do a lot of action as the script demands it. The film's actress will definitely somebody younger and more energetic to suit the role."

Shah Rukh Khan's Robot is ready to roll even before the release of his film Om Shanti Om. To be produced by Shah Rukh's production house Red Chillies Entertainment, the preproduction of the film has already begun.

SRK has already hired the best technicians for his film. The film will be directed by Indian cinema's highest paid director, Shankar. AR Rahman will compose Robot's music while Saboo Cyril is the film's Art Director.

SRK is currently on the verge of finalising the film's lead actress.

Robot is also speculated to be one of the costliest films to be made in Indian cinema. So excited is SRK about the project that he has put all his other projects on hold. He will start shooting for the film after Om Shanti Om releases.
The film will also boast of never-seen-before special effects in Indian Cinema as Shah Rukh now has the best in-house special effects team.

"SRK has the best special effects team in the country and Robot is going to be a sci-fi film. The team will make sure that the film's special effects are world class and better than what one saw in Krrish and Dhoom 2," says an industry source.
