Neetu Chandra misses being SRK's gal

Losing Out: Neetu Chandra

If all had gone well, Garam Masala actress Neetu Chandra would have starred opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Yash Raj Films' upcoming venture, Chak De.

Neetu was the first choice for the role, but later Yash Raj Films and director Shimit Amin decided to cast Vidya Malavade.

Plot lost

The film sees Shah Rukh playing an ageing hockey coach who takes a motley group of girls to the pinnacle of world hockey.

Neetu was supposed to essay the role of a Sikh girl who is keen to join the hockey team but does not get the approval of her parents.

Says a source from Yash Raj, "Neetu met Shimit a couple of times and everything seemed to be going well. Suddenly, one day she was told that she was being replaced by Vidya."

When contacted, Neetu admits that she had auditioned for Chak De and Shimit was considering her for the role. "But after the release of Traffic Signal, the makers felt that I deserved a bigger role. There are eleven girls in the film and every girl has almost an equal role," she says.

Bright gal

Neetu says she understands Shimit's need for a fresh face. "Shimit is a great guy. He is decent and very professional. I understand his perspective and subsequent change of mind. He said he would like to work with me in the future. I look forward to it," she says.

Asked if she regrets missing the opportunity to star opposite Shah Rukh Khan, Neetu says, "I'm not feeling bad. I am optimistic. I've worked very hard and I'm sure there'll be a next time."

Meanwhile, Neetu has signed a three-film contract with Ashtavinayak Films. "Also, I am doing a film to be produced by Anupam Kher," she signs off.

London calling

Part-Time Mumbaikar: Karan Johar

Seems like London is the destination of choice for B-Towners to escape the not-so-magical Mumbai monsoon.

For soon after the IIFA awards in Yorkshire were over, Rakesh Roshan and his family flew to the chic city for a short break. As did Karan Johar.

We think he should just buy a second home there. Considering the number of times he flies in and out of London, he's soon going to become an NRI!

Good friend Shah Rukh Khan too is giving him company there, though he didn't attend the awards function. We wonder why (wink, wink).

Amitabh and Salman's cold war!

19 Jun, 2007 07:51 pm IST

After Amitabh and Shah Rukh Khan's cold war, it's the turn of Amitabh Bachchan and Salman Khan's apparent war to come out in the open. A source from Yorkshire, where this year's IIFA awards were held, said that the so called cold war between the Bachchans and Salman was evident throughout the event. "Both the Bachchans and Salman Khan and his friends were trying to steal the show, and as a result two different camps were formed," says a filmmaker on condition of anonymity. The Bachchan and Salman cold war became public, when Amitabh didn't turn up till the last minute for the premiere of Emraan Hashmi's Train, because Salman was present at the venue. "Throughout the event their itinerary was made in such a way that Salman and the Bachchans, including the newly married couple Abhi- Ash didn't bump into each other. The organizers had a tough time managing the Bachchan and Khan camps," says our source. And now the buzz is that due to the growing animosity towards the Bachchans, Amitabh will no longer don the role of IIFA's brand ambassador. And guess who is in the rat race? Shah Rukh Khan... the Bachchan and Khan rivalry seems to be heating up!

Pepsi revs up sales pitch for World Cup

Wednesday, February 21, 2007
Blog this story

New Delhi: In the run-up to the ICC World Cup to be held in West Indies this March. PepsiCo India is entering into cross-promotional alliances with other brands.

The marketing pitch revolves around its Blue Billion theme to support the Indian cricket team.

Vipul Prakash, vice-president-marketing, said the company was looking at a massive effort to reach consumers through different channels with like-minded brands.

"We have also tied up with Adidas, which is retailing Men-in-Blue cricket accessories such as T-shirts, wrist bands and we would be co-promoting it through a mutual deal wherein Pepsi consumers will get some offers. Similarly, we have tied up with Microsoft on its new game on the X-Box 360," he said.

The company has also tied up with media partners such as Aaj Tak, SET Max, MTV and Radio Mirchi that will co-promote its 'Cheer-A-Thon' viral campaign and has Yahoo on board to help it maintain the site www.bluebillion.co.in.

Microsoft has already announced its plans to launch an exclusive game, Yuvraj Singh International Cricket 2007, for Indian consumers on its X-Box 360 platform as the event draws closer.

"We have tied up with Pepsi as it allows us reach into the key youth segment, wherein our console and game will be given out as an initial co-promotion deal," said Mohit Anand, country manager (entertainment and devices division), Microsoft Corporation India.

The marketing logic is fairly clear. According to Rima Gupta, country head, Henley Centre, "The thinking among brands has progressed. Earlier, we found one brand piggy-backing the stronger brand for its distribution strength and presence to pave way for itself.

"Today, the relationship is more among equals. Brands realise that consumers flirt between different brands and categories and the big thinking on cross promotional deals is to catch them through different means in a win-win situation," she said.

And this is working. To begin with, PepsiCo India claims that it has already got 7.5 lakh hits from cricket-crazy fans, who have signed on to wish the team luck.

To cap it all, the messages would be handed over personally to Indian cricket captain Rahul Dravid by Shah Rukh Khan at a send-off event planned later this month.

21st June 2007 09.01 IST
By Agencies

Superstar Shah Rukh Khan not only rules Bollywood but also the advertising world.

According to the recent service tax collections SRK is the most popular salesman of brands.

Excise officials say that SRK alone paid Rs 4.8 crore as service tax last year, which is nearly 10 per cent of his annual Rs 50 crore income from advertisements.

Next in line is Bollywood mega superstar Amitabh Bachchan who is second highest contributor to service tax in the film industry followed by son Abhishek Bachchan .

The Big B paid Rs 1.50 crore while Abhishek paid Rs 1 crore the same as Rani Mukherjee who tops among actresses.

Among other actors John Abraham paid Rs 79 lakh as service tax, Sushmita Sen 37.50 lakh, Preity Zinta paid 27.43 lakh, Salman Khan 13.50 lakh, Malaika Arora 3 lakh and Lara Dutta paid 2.93 lakh.

Service tax paid by Bollywood actors comes under the brand ambassador's sector, which is one of 104 sectors that the Central Excise collects tax from in Mumbai.

Last year, the Central Excise department had collected nearly Rs 12,000 crore in the form of service tax from various sectors like Insurance companies, Banking and Finance and Phone services.

The officials say that with the increasing involvement of film stars in promoting new brands, Bollywood is increasingly becoming one of the major sectors of tax collection.

Shah Rukh Cheques Farah's Spending

[20 Jun 2007>

TWO friends had gone mountain trekking when they saw a huge bear standing in their path. One of the friends started putting on his running shoes when his friend said, "What are you doing? It won't help. You can't outrun the bear." The friend replied, "I don't need to outrun the bear." It was a simple internet joke mailed to me by a friend, but wary of friendships, one tried to find a message in the humor. But probably the message has been clear since ages. There are some things friends would do for you and there are some things they won't. And another new age message that's evolved through experience over the years is don't talk money and make business with friends. You are likely to lose both.

No surprise, 'friendships' in our industry are so fickle. It all starts out with everyone being everyone's friend. Two actresses working on a film together or doing a stage show, start out as bosom buddies and talk of how they are karmically connected. Few days later, they are tearing each other apart in the press, or restrict their love to frosty glares when competition seeps in. Rani Mukherjee, for example, is known to run through her set of friends before she's done running through her minimal, atrocious wardrobe. While on the other hand, there are those who are always standing up for their friends, supporting them through their rough times with acts that cleanse the cynicism out of your system. Brats Sunjay Dutt and Salman Khan top the charts here.

And there is a Shah Rukh Khan for whom friendship is a perfectly symbiotic relationship. He's made it a habit to work with friends and make friends with most people he works with, and seen to it that both parties are benefited. It was his off-screen friendship with Juhi that made their chemistry so palpable in 'Darr', 'Yes Boss' and more films they did together. After Juhi settled into matrimony, the two remained friends and even ran a production house together, but there was no revisiting the famous on-screen chemistry. It wasn't just commercially viable anymore.

It was Shah Rukh's (along with Kajol's) belief in the talent of an assistant on the sets of Aditya Chopra's 'DDLJ' that saw Karan Johar take his first big step in the industry. Of course, Karan had a winner script in 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai', but it's debatable if it would have been such a success had it not been for the lead pair's support.

Shah Rukh and Karan Johar have gone from strength to strength since then, giving hits together like 'K3G', 'Kal Ho Na Ho' and 'KANK'. The years gone by have only strengthened their friendship too, so much so that today Karan Johar's name is synonymous with SRK's. A film made by Dharma Productions without Shah Rukh is unimaginable. Karan isn't the only one who gained Shah Rukh's support when he needed it the most. When choreographer Farah Khan decided to turn director, it was Shah Rukh she went to with a script and to get his feedback. SRK was most encouraging of his friend and came forward to produce the film and also star in it. That's how 'Main Hoon Na' happened.

Farah, in her first film, was provided a huge canvas and the liberty to pick and choose the best for her film. SRK was a hands-on producer but barely interfered with his director and trusted her with her job. Sadly, the end result left a lot to be desired. The film did reasonably well at the box-office, thanks to SRK's standing and Sushmita's sizzle act in the film. But the director received her due flak and SRK must have realized that he shouldn't rely on his friends blindly.

Farah meanwhile took a backseat while her husband Shirish Kunder made 'Jaan-e-Mann'. While helping her husband with the technical aspects of the film, Farah was also working on the script of her next film. As 'Jaan-e-Mann' readied for completion Farah approached Shah Rukh with her new script. It was another ambitious project 'Happy New Year' and was to star Shah Rukh and Amitabh Bachchan in it. SRK however wasn't going to blindly lap up the project this time. In fact he wasn't happy with the script at all and turned it down immediately. Farah went back to reworking her script but Shah Rukh wasn't happy with the redraft either. This went on for a while, Farah came up with fresh takes on her script and Shah Rukh kept thumbing them down. It came to a point where they finally decided to scrap the project completely.

It was a double whammy for Farah 'coz around then 'Jaane-e-Mann' crashed at the box-office. Shirish Kunder did win some brownie points for his innovative techniques and he was set on coming back with a bang. He had a rough experience working with Salman on 'Jaan-e-Mann', and Shirish was hardly going to be able to repeat him in his next. It was Farah who accompanied Shirish to Shah Rukh to narrate Shirish's new script to him. But Shah Rukh wasn't interested. Apparently, he told them that he was busy all through the year and couldn't accommodate his film. Farah, though disappointed, could understand SRK's decision, not wanting to take any more risky decisions at the moment. He'd just burnt his fingers with 'Don'. She set out to work on her new script, something that just couldn't be turned down. 'Om Shanti Om' was the result of that. Finally Shah Rukh was happy with the script and was going to produce it. The story of a film star, with Shah Rukh in the main lead began rolling in Filmcity, where a huge, ostentatious set was erected for a long schedule of the film.

Shah Rukh had again given Farah a free hand to work out the best for their film. So while she was to launch supermodel Deepika Padukone in the main lead opposite Shah Rukh, she roped in Arjun Rampal for a cameo in the film. Farah has always claimed to be a believer in the larger than life nature of movies, and wanted to go bigger and greater with her film. She made a list of a couple of dozen stars who she approached on SRK's behalf to play walk-on parts in the film. Except for a few rebuttals like from the Bachchans, Ajay Devgan and Sushmita, they all made their presence felt. Emboldened by achieving this feat, Farah decided to go lavish with her presentation. The ostentatious sets were refurbished for more opulence. Farah wanted to re-shoot some of the canned scenes she wasn't too happy with. Maybe it was the choreographer in her taking over that Farah wanted to add a couple of songs to her film. She was also planning a generous publicity blitz for 'Om Shanti Om', probably in a bid to prove that she could do things in a mammoth way and that she'd arrived on the big scene. Maybe she wanted to give Bhansali a run for his money.

Shah Rukh however, didn't quite share her sentiments. Farah's ideas were all good on paper, but would push the budget of his film much higher than he'd wanted and anticipated. It was time for the producer of the film to stand up and put his foot down. And that is exactly what Shah Rukh did according to our source. He decided he had to have a word with Farah before it was too late. He reportedly, told her that though he appreciated her ideas he couldn't go along with them, and she'd have to stick to her budget. Farah wasn't exactly heartbroken but she did feel disappointed. When the film is in the running for a record bid for distribution rights, what's the big deal with pushing the budget a few notches? But by drawing the line already, SRK has cleverly demonstrated that he could separate friendship from professional decisions. While Farah wraps up the film, a song less here and there maybe, she still has a friend who stands by her. SRK has averted any future grudges and possible acrimony that might creep in when you give in too much to a friend. After all, financial losses can be recovered. The only loss worth crying over is that of a friendship.
