Television audiences are used to Shah Rukh Khan displaying jubilation, tension and disappointment when the Kolkata Knight Riders play in the IPL or the Champions League Twenty20.
If you thought the franchise was the only entity that brought out the emotions from the King of Bollywood, think again.
On Saturday, SRK and wife Gauri were present at a taekwondo tournament in Bandra to support their children, Aryan and Suhana. And the superstar was completely involved in his children's bouts.
Aryan 14, and Suhana 11, were participating in the Kiran Taekwondo training academy's annual inter-class competition.
Given that he's a doting father, it wasn't surprising to see the superstar at the event. What distinguished him from the other parents, of course, were continuous requests for autographs from the other kids.
Despite placing himself in a corner away from the 'fighting' area, he was still in the limelight. Aryan and Suhana, both received a pep talk from their father before they went out to face their opponents.
He also helped them with their protective gear and duringtheir warm-ups. During both their bouts, the film star was at his vocal best, encouraging them to land their kicks in the right places while recording their performance on his phone.
And yes, the kids did not disappoint their father. Both won their respective bouts.
"I encourage my children to play every sport. Their mother gets a little worried about injuries taekwondo can cause, but I think getting hurt is a big part of growing up. Aryan has been involved in the sport ever since he joined Dhirubhai Ambani International School seven years ago. Suhana started a little later. I think they have become quite good at it now," he told
DNA.
Shah Rukh's kids train under Kiran Upadhya, who is a six dan black belt in taekwondo. She made it to the Limca book of records on two occasions for being the leading Indian woman in the martial art.
King Khan did not seem too disheartened by the fact that Kolkata were unable to make it to the semifinals of the ongoing Champions League Twenty20.
He said, "We have a habit of getting into form late (into the tournament). The early losses have cost us. But there are a lot of positives the team can take from this competition. The youngsters that we have — Iqbal Abdulla, Manvinder Bisla, Manoj Tiwary — are starting to perform. We have a core group in the team now.
That's the best part. Senior players like Jacques Kallis will always perform well, but we need the rest to step up and we are getting there."
