With multiplexes a new set of directors and a different kind of cinema has evolved
These are exciting times for Hindi cinema. With different plotlines and backdrops, cinema is evolving. Check out Taare Zameen Par, a film on dyslexia, Welcome To Sajjanpur with its main lead playing a letter-writer, or the gripping A Wednesday with two senior actors as protagonists. Different films with unconventional casting and stories. Aamir Khan, the hero of a typical potboiler like Ghajini, was afflicted with the rare short-term memory loss, while though Akshay Kumar played the regular hero in Singh Is Kinng, the film shot in Melbourne presented him as a very stylish Sikh. So is it multiplexes, with their niche and urbane audience that has given rise to this new-age cinema?
Though panelists Shyam Shroff, Kabir Khan and Sujoy Ghosh wondered if any film could be labelled as a multiplex film, they all agreed that the multiplexes were definitely a newer and better platform for filmmakers to showcase their products and have given rise to more and new filmmakers whose sensibilities were more urbane and aesthetic.
Interestingly, with the multiplex films emerged the multiplex stars. Actors who did not fit into the mould of a typical Hindi film hero or pulled the audiences into the huge single screens, but had enough charisma to attract a niche audience into the 300-400 seater multiplexes. Abhay Deol,Rajeev khandelwal and Pratik can be labelled as multiplex stars.
