hey guys this is my first topic here. Anyways so I was discussing with Mystery about the Hunger Games and how its only in Katniss' point of view and that got me thinking of other books with points of view and so forth.

anyways my question is that while reading a novel do you prefer first or third person point of view?

I personally don't favor first person point of view especially in a book like The Hunger Games where there are a lot of interesting characters other than Katniss and its sort of frustrating to be stuck in her mind all of the time and interpreting other characters only as the way she sees them. I feel like the first person point of view makes it seem like the writer is lazy and not to keen on character development, especially in a book like the Hunger Games where so many things can be explored other than Katniss's mind (not bashing the author here, I love THG).

The only books that I prefer first person point of view are Kiterunner, Percy Jackson, Speak and the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series mainly because the protagonists are the ones that make the story a lot more interesting. For example Aamir was a very flawed character and it was essential to hear his thoughts and feelings and actions regarding his journey. In Speak, Melinda was basically a mute character, she barely spoke but the way her mind works and her humor was entertaining to read. and of course Greg from TDOAWK is just plain adorable and hysterical so its great to hear this take on things. But a character like Bella from Twilight, I HATE her beyond anything and I hate being stuck in her mind the whole damn time, its like ENOUGH you stupid dumbo stop it, we know you think Edward is hot move the damn story forward already! and I hate how SM makes us hate some characters like Rosalie and Jacob just because Bella has differences with them🤢 (I personally loved Jake and Rose) and like characters like Edward and Alice despite their OTT perkiness and creepy stalkerish personality

I love the third person point of view because you get the whole picture, interactions between characters are clear, there are more dialogues, and also you as a reader don't have to always have to read much into the actions of another character because there are interpretations

anyways sorry for the rambling...what are your thoughts and preferences

well when m into a romance i wanna get into the psyche of the h/H so i like different POV ... so tht i can know whats going on in both the brains ...
actually its more about the wayy a novek is written and the perspective and theme .. a 3rd person POV isn't a sure shot ... nor is the !st person's according to the theme it changes

good post ...

^I agree with you, it all comes down to the writing I suppose because if its written as brilliantly as Hosseini in Kiterunner then the story itself makes you enthralled rather than the character

but for books in the fantasy genre like Twilight and The Hunger Games I feel like first person almost ruins it. (for THG maybe because I have an ebook and the format is weirdly distorted on my iPad may be the reason why)

well yes rightly said kiterunner is a solid example if u know how to spin a tale ... it makes everyone gasp for breath ... u dont even need a romantic angle .. nor to know whats going on in heads ...
same is the case with eat pray love the way elisabeth gilbert spinned it in 109 chapps i was freaked in a good way man!!!
well yea fantasy and adeventure as well as paranormal spoilss in first person u need to see it in a different way
and well true if u have a bad e book then man it will suck...

I agree with you. Third person narrative is my favorite! It makes the story so much more interesting when you can see the same event through different characters' point of view. I love reading what those other characters are feeling.

When there's a story like The Kiterunner and Speak, first person is essential because that's pretty much their story. But when it comes to The Hunger Games, I would love love love to read from Peeta, Gale, Haymitch, and Finnick's point of views. Those are something amazing characters, and I really really wanted to read about what they feel, how they think instead of just Katniss' interpretation of their actions.

I guess it's a choice that every writer makes, but even when I write (nothing major, just some short stories 😳) I almost always go for the third person style because that gives me an opportunity to truly explore the story through the different characters I create. I think the 3rd person narrative not only makes the readers enjoy more but also the writer (at least me) enjoys so much more writing it.

^yeah I feel like in the fantasy genre first person should be like avoided because you're bound to have a lot of characters and it would be nice to hear their actions in a neutral light rather than the main protagonist telling us what they think that character is doing

What about first person point of views but with multiple narratives? I personally like stuff like that because you can really get into the mindset of lots of different characters without the restriction that the third person point of view has...

^that would be great as well...I wouldnt mind that because you're getting the point of view of all and not one...but I havent really read any books like that so dont really know, I think I only read one book like that in middle school called The Wanderer, pretty neat book and it followed that narrative style

^^ I've read quite a few that follow that style of writing, the first that comes to mind being 'My Sister's Keeper." Not that I don't like first person and third person POVs as well but this one happens to be my favorite :)

Third person for me. Why contain yourselves to one character , when you can have as many Pov as you want? What an event look like to one character , other may see the same event differently.
