Adi Chopra & Kunal Kohli have showdown

Reportedly co-producers Aditya Chopra and Kunal Kohli had a showdown on Sunday over the poor returns of Thoda Pyaar… The opening collections in the UK are worse than that of Tashan.

Apparently the two traded blame. Aditya blamed Kunal for the poor product while Kunal blamed Adi for poor business acumen. He reportedly told Aditya in no uncertain terms that had they sold the film to a corporate giant, they would at least have made some table profit. Kunal also complained that Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic was not publicised well.

Insiders say that a corporate giant had offered Kunal Kohli and Yash Raj Films a huge sum for this Saif Ali Khan-Rani Mukerji-starrer. Kunal, who's a co-producer, was very keen to sell the film, but Yash Raj Films was not interested.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh says, "Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic registered very good collections only on Saturday. From Monday, it started dipping. The collections must have created havoc in Yash Raj Films. Overseas, the film has done worse than Tashan. It's a huge disappointment."

"Nobody expected the film to flop so badly and there were a couple of corporate companies interested in the film. If they had sold the film, the distributors would have suffered and the co-producers would have been sitting pretty."

When contacted, Kunal said, "I don't know if YRF had received the offer from a corporate giant. Nobody came to me with one." When asked if he would make his next film with YRF, Kunal quipped, "I am still looking at the collections of this one. It's hypothetical to assume that we would have earned more had we sold Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic to a corporate giant. Let's see how much we recover from satellite and overseas rights," Kunal added.

"YRF wasn't approached with any corporate offer for Thoda… Even if such an offer were to come YRF wouldn't have accepted it as it would go against the principles of our studio model," said Aashish Singh, VP, production, YRF.
