Rani Mukerji is miffed about being branded as a Yash Raj heroine, she's trying to sign other banners

The insinuation that Rani Mukerji is a resident Yashraj heroine has the talented actress fuming. A source close to Rani says it takes the actress all her willpower to stop herself from bursting a blood vessel when she's referred to as the ghar ki heroine at Yashraj.

"What exactly do people mean by this?" says a source very close to Rani. "Agreed Rani has done comparatively more films with the Yashraj banner. But that's because any heroine in Bollywood would be foolish to turn down an author-backed heroine-centric part like Laga Chunri Mein Daag."

Continues the source, "In fact Rani makes it a point to remind people that lately she did Karan Johar's Kabhi Alvidaa Na Kehna, Ravi Chopra's Baghban and Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Saawariya. None of these is a Yashraj film."

In fact if rumours are to be believed, Rani is on the verge of signing a couple of films that are far removed from the Yashraj banner.

"One of course is Sanjay Leela Bhansali's historical Bajirao Mastani, which is far from shelved. Sanjay plans to make the film in the near future. And while the rest of the cast may change Rani as Bajirao's wife remains in place. There are other films that Rani is seriously considering," says the source.

Adds the source, "Some time ago, Rani said 'no' to Mira Nair's Namesake for emotional reasons. The excuse was dates. But Rani had her own reasons for foregoing a role that has changed Tabu's career internationally. Today Rani is in a space were she realises being hard-headed and business-like is what Bollywood is all about. She certainly does not want to be branded as a Yashraj heroine."

Whispers that she acts like a hostess at Yashraj Studios are strongly denied by people close to the organisation. "This is all in people's minds. Rani is at home in every production house. Have you seen her with Karan Johar or Sanjay Bhansali? She's totally relaxed in their homes, has long chats with their moms and even goes into their kitchen at will."

At the moment Rani is in intense preparation for her cricket film with new director Anurag Singh. Says the source, "It's being said she's agreed to work with a new director because of the banner. But Rani has worked with Kunal Kohli and Shaad Ali. Even Karan Johar was a debutant when Rani did Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. As for working with only Yashraj, Kunal Kohli's Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic is entirely Kunal's production. Yashraj have only lent their name."

Rani herself has said she wants to sign films outside the Yashraj banner and was hoping to do a film with Akshay as in the past she turned down films with him because she didn't like the roles offered to her. I think her and Akshay would make an interesting pair, I've also read that she's doing a movie with Shahid that will definately be an interesting pair!

You do have a point. It is just recently Rani has been doing more films more frequently than he has so it is easier to single her out.

Yes he does, but I guess since Rani has had more releases and most being under the YRF banner the media has chose to pick on her. The article brought up a good point, Saawariya was not a YRF nor was Baabul. I think if Rani is offered a good role outside of YRF, she would take it.

Yeah, I have noticed that too. 😒It is kinda sad too because Rani is probably one of the best actresses in the industry. Rajeev Masand is pretty fair here though, and I am glad he is giving her a fair hearing. She may not be the best looking or the most fashionable, but she is still very versatile. Working with Yashraj is not a crime, and it something most actors desire to do in Bollywood though I don't know why (especially anymore). 🤔 Everyone says in an interview that Adi is the best director. For goodness sake from Kareena to KJo admit it in their interviews. Again I don't know why cause Mohabbatein stinks, but they do. 😕

rani's last movie was saawariya, where she did not just play a cameo or a special appearance...she had a good meaty role...i duno why ppl are saying she ONLY does yashraj movies....for gods sake get ur facts right...she's working with yashraj AND other production houses 😕

Totally agree and Bhootnath was not a yash raj film...

Rani is great and i think she should do good films regardless of the banner laaga chunari mein daag, hum tum she played some great characters even in veer zaara she had a good role i thinkshe shouldnt turn down any banner just because she wants to stick with one or not do one because she feels shes doing too many..
