Rapunzel has competition... | 2008-01-29

We look at Bollywood's best and worst manes...

If long hair got men famous, then a lot of our Bollywood heroes would be legendary today. But then, the reality of life has another side to it

I have nothing against long hair, it's pretty cool even. But it just doesn't suit everyone. If I have to get more specific, I have been having palpitations every time I think of Vivek Oberoi's newfound love for locks. In the yester-era, we've had stars like Jakie Shroff, Mithun Chakraborthy and Sanjay Dutt who've managed to extremely suave and svelte with their long hair. But today, we encounter more disasters than demi-gods.

It probably won't be long before acting prowess is measured by the length of one's hair. Everybody seems to be going the Rapunzel way these days. While the young and the ambitious blindly ape it as a style mantra, the older ones clandestinely use it as a tool to hide their aging faces.

Case in point-Shah Rukh Khan and Abhishek Bachchan

Though SRK claims that his hair was long only because his hair stylist went on a maternity leave (I wonder how many babies she had. It took ages.). He asserted time and again that he didn't keep his hair long because of any vogue statement he was trying to make. I totally believe! Until recently, when the stylist returned, SRK paraded the city with his uncut locks looking like a combo version of Michael Jackson and Undertaker. Thankfully, the phase is over now. He has cut off his locks to look presentable and attune with his age. Hope it wasn't the competition at home that drove him to a pair of scissors.

Abhishek on the other hand is sporting long hair (plus his headband) for his upcoming film 'Drona'. His hair also camouflages all those tyres around his neck that he forgot to lose after 'Guru'

The latest entrant in the line is of course, Vivek Oberoi. It nauseates me to even write about this! He has not only grown his hair, he has curled it (or whatever the hell it is) and streaked it gold much to the horror and disgust of everyone I have known in my entire life! My before-bed prayer these days goes something like this.

"Dear God, Please send an angel to chop off Vivek's hair. I might just die of shock if i see him that way in 'Mission Istanbul'. Please also quickly find Vivek Oberoi a girlfriend. My doctor says that prolonged loneliness could lead to depression and consequent madness. Oh God, please answer my prayer."

But according to me and my old friend Jackie Shroff, John Abraham is the one who looks hottest with long rebounded hair. In fact, I don't quite like his close cut look.

I must add here, though it deviates from Bollywood, Dhoni must keep away from long hair like plague. It's bad for cricket.

Also, in my good list falls Arjun Rampal. Arjun Rampal's height and build fantastically compliments his long haired look. He cut his hair in between, but he's back with his old look now. Hotness!

Talking about long hair, it is difficult to miss Milind Soman. My heart skipped a beat when he first rose from Alisha Chinai's wooden box in 'Made in India'. That was long before he decided that combing his hair was a bad habit. Today, he religiously sticks to his resolution. I can't remember the last time I saw him with his hair in place. I don't quite like his look, but he's hot anyway!

The third of this lot involves (a lot of) wannabes who just have their weight growing on their head. This lot of people, you might not recognise. Starlets and wannabes like Chirag Paswan (He is Ram Vilas Paswan's son and has no offers in hand yet), Kunal Khemu, Imaad Shah (he doesn't have long hair, he just has a lot of hair) and Mimoh Chakraborthy (Mithun da's son) have spent fortunes taming their mane, I hear. I've spent a lot of time trying to figure out why these people go through so much trouble to grow their hair. If they think that film-makers would by fluke-luck notice them for their hair and offer them roles, RIP.
