 The shy and reticent Imtiaz Ali does not believe in resting on his laurels.So even as the lead pair of his superhit Jab We Met, Shahid Kapur and Kareena Kapoor, are still basking in the glory of the film, he has moved ahead. "Once the work is out, in my case a movie, one can sit on one's laurels only for some time. But then one gets excited in another story. The actors come into the film's world at a later stage and the director has already spent a lot of time there. So, I walked towards another story immediately after Jab We Met," says the director who was in the city recently. But is there a formula to his films, Socha Na Tha and JWM, given the way they clicked with youngsters? "How I wish there was a formula! But there isn't any. I think youngsters can relate to what they see in my films. That's what they saw and liked in both my films," he answers. Do we see a repeat of that in his next film – Saif's debut as a producer starring Deepika Padukone and Saif himself? "I hope so. This film, however, is a departure from Jab We Met. It is about contemporary relationships in the modern world. It brings across a fresh, young perspective of fresh, young people. And it is a story with more than two people in it. The film is a work-in-progress as of now," he adds. But why didn't Imtiaz sign Kareena for the film? She even requested him to take her in all his future films after receiving the Filmfare best actress award for JWM. "Kareena wasn't a perfect match for the film. There is something called casting and it is of critical importance to every film. You don't want to take a girl who you know so well, love so much and share a great rapport with just because of all these reasons I just mentioned. It is unfair to the movie and to the girl herself. On the other hand, I don't know Deepika personally or equally well but I know she can be of good use to the character. Kareena didn't fit into this script naturally. She can say anything to me because it is really between friends. She is not my chaddi buddy, we don't chat around, call each other but we were a great team at work. And sometimes that is better than being socially acquainted," says Imtiaz, adding, "Casting Kareena in my next would have been like saying 'Cast Sanjeev Kumar in Dharmendra's role in Sholay because he has delivered a terrific performance in Sita Aur Gita!' Would that be accepted?" |
