Om Shanti Om fever spills over the New Year

A majority of the hotels, restaurants and resorts in several cities of North India, including New Delhi, Lucknow, Noida, Chandigarh among others, which are hosting New Year's Eve parties have opted for the Om Shanti Om theme this year to cash in on the 1970s' craze that the film has unleashed all over the country.

A leading five-star hotel here is putting up a film set for its New Year's Eve party, and the dress code for guests is the retro look colourful shirts, bell-bottoms, tight churidars, scarves and the like.

"We have done a lot of themes in past years and this one was a novel idea. We will be playing music from the 1970s and recreate the entire ambience of the era. The response has been terrific, and we have already got our bookings full," said one of the managers of the hotel.

Another three-star hotel is also hosting a Om Shanti Om party on December 31, and has got "Om" (Shah Rukh Khan) and "Shanti" (Deepika Padukone) masks for its guests. "Apart from the music, we will serve food that will remind people of the period. Cold drinks and mocktails will be served in specially designed bottles with straws, and street food from Mumbai will be available for all guests."

At yet another resort on the outskirts of Lucknow, the New Year's Eve party will be held on a specially-designed set that resembles a film studio. A bridge with hoardings that was seen in Om Shanti Om will serve as the bar and three "limousines" will be used to bring in guests from the main entrance.

"We will also be providing clothes for guests who do not have suitable attire to match the theme. Hit songs of R. D. Burman will play through the night, and games at the party will revolve around 1970s' themes. We have brought in film posters of the era from Mumbai and these will be displayed at the venue. More than adults, we find that the kids are excited about the idea," says Puneet Agarwal, manager at the resort.

At least three restaurants in Lucknow have also decorated their outlets with old film posters - a carryover from Om Shanti Om.
