Love it or loath it, you can't ignore it | ||
Deepa Karmalkar I am glad that the film is finding great appreciation among viewers as well as reviewers. They said Hazaaron Khwahishen Aisi was a flop and now they tell me that it is a big hit! KKC may look like a Rs 20 crore film but it was wrapped in just Rs six crores and that's not too expensive at all. It will recover its cost through satellite, DVD and music rights. Even the theatrical collection is not bad. Aren't you shocked that the audience feels that the KKC characters aren't well-established? No, I am not shocked, I have made a film that requires from audience to understand and relate. I have made a film in a novel structure, it's not your usual action-reaction fare. I am familiar with all the formulae and rules of scriptwriting as prescribed by Syd Field, but I chose a different path. And I am glad that the audience can see a film that's so gentle. What are the compliments that you have received for KKC? I have received thousands of compliments via SMS-es from my colleagues and friends in the industry, Ravi Dewan congratulated me heartily. How will you defend yourself against the charges of weak screenplay, a plot that doesn't hold? It's not as if the screenplay doesn't hold, it's just that people are uncomfortable with Shiney's character. Instead of redeeming himself in the latter half, he becomes unheroic - betraying his loved ones. It expresses the frustration of cinema realitically and honestly. That Soha Ali Khan is miscast in such a powerful role? |
Which is your best scene in the film?
When Zafar (Shiney) goes to Ratanbala (Sonya Jehan) with a role instead of Nikhat (Soha) trying to convince her hollowly that only she could do justice to it. It is so very typical of the film line, it sums up the essence of cinema.
I am happy to have rediscovered many actors and technicians through this film. KKC puts Soha, Sonya Jehan, art director Gautam Sen and music director Shantanu Moitra in a different league altogether.
What would your next Tera Kya Hoga Johnny be about?
Tera Kya Hoga Johnny is set at a time when Mumbai wants to be Shanghai. Who gives a s**t about a street kid named Johnny who sells coffee on the streets of the cruel city? We'll have film songs that the protagonist Johnny likes played and sung impromptu. Sikander, a 13-year-old actor plays the title role.
